If your automatic watch supports hand winding, turn its crown slowly clockwise in the winding position and follow the instructions for your exact model. There is no universal number of turns: Grand Seiko, EBEL, Hamilton, and Baume & Mercier specify different amounts for different movements. Check the manual before winding, especially if the crown screws down.
How to wind an automatic watch by hand
- Identify the watch or movement. Find the model or caliber in the paperwork, on the case, or through the manufacturer’s support information. Use its manual rather than a turn count from another watch; the procedures differ among movements. See the Grand Seiko 9RB2 instructions, EBEL operating instructions, and Baume & Mercier FAQ.
- Release a screw-down crown if the manual directs you to. Unscrew it as instructed; do not pull it into a time-setting position unless the watch’s instructions say to. On the cited Grand Seiko 9RB2, winding is done with the crown in its normal position after unscrewing the screw-lock crown.
- Wind in the specified position and direction. The cited Grand Seiko 9RB2 and Seiko 6R64 instructions both specify slow clockwise crown turns. The 6R64 manual directs the user to continue until the power-reserve indicator shows a full wind. Follow your own movement’s instructions if they differ: Seiko caliber 6R64 instructions.
- Stop at the model’s stated count or indicator. Do not force the crown or assume it will stop when the watch is fully wound. Hamilton notes that the crown on its described automatic models does not lock at full wind; use the procedure in the Hamilton manual.
- Secure the crown again. If it screws down, return it to the closed position as directed before wearing the watch or exposing it to water. EBEL’s cited operating instructions specifically say to screw the crown back down after operation.
How many turns does an automatic watch need?
Use the count for the exact model and purpose—an initial restart count is not necessarily the same as a full-wind instruction. These manufacturer examples are not interchangeable:

Why an automatic watch may need winding
An automatic watch is designed to wind from movement while worn, but some automatic movements also support winding through the crown. If the watch has stopped, crown winding can restart it when the manufacturer permits that method. Patek Philippe describes self-winding movements as powered by the wearer’s movements and reports a 38–48-hour power reserve for its self-winding movements, with exceptions for specific models; that range is not a specification for all automatic watches. Common winding mistakes to avoid
- Using another watch’s turn count. The cited recommendations range from 7.5 rotations for about 10 hours on the Grand Seiko 9RB2 to 50–60 rotations for the Hamilton automatic models described in its manual.
- Turning the crown the wrong way. Counterclockwise turning does not wind the cited Grand Seiko 9RB2. The cited Seiko 6R64 instructions also specify slow clockwise turning. Verify the direction for your movement.
- Forcing the crown or relying on a hard stop. Some automatic crowns do not lock when fully wound; Hamilton states this for the models covered by its manual. Use the manual’s count or reserve indicator rather than forcing the crown.
- Leaving a screw-down crown unsecured. Follow the manufacturer’s closing procedure after winding. Do not assume the watch remains water-resistant while its crown is unscrewed.
- Mixing up winding and setting positions. Crown positions depend on the model. Use the winding position shown in the manual rather than pulling the crown out by guesswork.
What to check if the watch does not start
First, confirm that the exact movement supports hand winding and that you used its specified crown position, direction, and count. The cited Grand Seiko instruction says, “When using a stopped watch, it is recommended to turn the crown to wind the mainspring.” If the watch still does not run after the model’s procedure, stop rather than applying extra force; use the manufacturer’s service guidance for that watch.
