The Rolex Datejust is a compelling all-around luxury watch: it pairs a practical date display with a recognizable, traditional design and a wide choice of sizes, materials and bracelets. That breadth makes it adaptable, not universally perfect. The best Datejust depends on how you want it to wear, what you want it made of and what you are prepared to spend.
What makes the Datejust an enduring all-rounder?
Rolex dates the Datejust’s launch to 1945 and describes it as the first self-winding, waterproof chronometer wristwatch to display the date in a window at 3 o’clock. The date is the model’s defining practical feature; the design around it has evolved while retaining familiar Datejust cues.
The collection’s appeal is the combination of that useful display with a choice of distinctly different executions. A steel watch on an Oyster bracelet can look relatively restrained; a fluted bezel, two-tone or gold case, gem-set details, or a Jubilee bracelet creates a more conspicuous or formal impression. The Datejust is not one fixed look, and not every configuration will suit every wearer.
The Jubilee bracelet was created for the Datejust in 1945, according to Rolex. Wallpaper* reports that the Cyclops lens over the date was added in 1953. For a deeper account, Wallpaper* describes Nicholas Foulkes’s book Oyster Perpetual Datejust – A Watch that Made History as a 224-page history available in English and French.
Which Datejust size should you choose?
Rolex’s current model range lists Datejust 31, Datejust 36 and Datejust 41. Case diameter is a useful starting point, but it cannot by itself determine how a watch will look or feel on your wrist. Try the sizes on if possible, paying attention to how the case and bracelet sit and whether the dial feels easy to read.
- Datejust 31: The smallest of the three listed sizes. Rolex specifies calibre 2236 for this size.
- Datejust 36: The middle size, with a long-standing, balanced look that many buyers associate with the classic Datejust. Rolex specifies calibre 3235.
- Datejust 41: The largest listed size, for a more substantial presence on the wrist. It also uses calibre 3235.
There is no objectively best size: personal wrist fit and the impression you want matter more than choosing the largest or most popular-sounding option.

What do the Datejust specifications mean in daily use?
Rolex states that Datejust 31, 36 and 41 models are guaranteed waterproof to 100 metres (330 feet). This is the manufacturer’s specification, not an independent test result. Rolex identifies calibre 2236 in the 31 and calibre 3235 in the 36 and 41.
For the 41, Rolex’s 2026 announcement highlights a green lacquer ombré dial with Chromalight hour markers and a fluted bezel on the announced configuration. The announcement also says Rolex strengthened its Superlative Chronometer criteria from 2026. That is Rolex’s description of its own certification standard, not a third-party comparative award.

How to compare Datejust configurations and prices
Before choosing a reference, compare the parts that change the watch’s appearance, feel and cost. Rolex’s current catalog spans Oystersteel, combinations of Oystersteel and gold, solid gold and diamond-set configurations; precious-metal and gem-set versions cost considerably more than the steel examples below.
| Choice | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Material | Oystersteel offers a more restrained metal look; two-tone, gold and diamond-set versions are more visually distinctive and substantially change the price. |
| Bracelet | Rolex lists Oyster and Jubilee bracelets for Datejust 36 and 41. The described Datejust 31 range also offers a President bracelet. |
| Bezel and dial | Options vary by reference and include smooth, domed, fluted or gem-set bezels, alongside different dial colors and designs. Check the exact configuration rather than assuming every combination is available in every size. |
Selected Oystersteel examples in Rolex’s US-facing catalog accessed on October 7, 2026 were $7,700 USD for a 31 mm model, $8,150 USD for a 36 mm model and $8,950 USD for a 41 mm model. These are live catalog examples for particular configurations, not a universal or fixed price list; availability and prices can change.

Is a Rolex Datejust a good everyday watch?
It can be, especially if you want a traditional-looking luxury watch with a date display and a configuration suited to your preferred size and style. The manufacturer’s 100-metre waterproofness guarantee is a useful specification, but it does not make every Datejust configuration the right choice for every routine or taste. Consider the material, bracelet and bezel you will be comfortable wearing regularly, as well as the cost of ownership.
Do not buy one on the assumption that it is a guaranteed investment. The evidence here supports the Datejust’s broad choice and established design identity, not a promise of future appreciation or a universal ranking above competing watches.
