The most likely reason is compatibility—not a faulty phone. Samsung says the Galaxy Watch7, Galaxy Watch Ultra, and Galaxy Watch8 series cannot charge from a Galaxy phone using Wireless PowerShare. Older Galaxy Watch generations may work, but only with a supported phone, at least 30% battery, clear contact, and careful alignment.
Before repeatedly moving the watch around the phone’s back, identify the exact watch model.

Check the watch model first
“Samsung smartwatch” covers several generations with different charging behavior. Samsung’s current U.S. charging guidance says these models are not compatible with phone-back Wireless PowerShare:

Use the dedicated charging puck for those watches. Wireless PowerShare cannot be enabled or restored by changing a setting, and Samsung describes the limitation as related to newer watch design changes.

Older models listed in Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance can generally use PowerShare:

Samsung’s broader wireless-charging pages have contained inconsistent or apparently older watch listings. For newer models, the current U.S. Galaxy Watch charging guide and Wireless PowerShare troubleshooting page are the safer references. If your model name is unclear—particularly a similarly named “Classic” model—check the Galaxy Wearable app, the packaging, or Samsung’s model-specific instructions.
Does your Galaxy phone support Wireless PowerShare?
Not every Galaxy device can share power. Samsung lists support across many Galaxy S, Note, Fold, and Flip models, but its current guidance does not list Galaxy A-series, XCover-series, or Galaxy Tab devices as supported PowerShare phones.

Open the phone’s Quick Settings panel and look for Wireless PowerShare. If the button is missing, edit the Quick Settings buttons and add it if your phone model supports the feature. If the feature is absent on an unsupported A-series, XCover, or Tab device, there is no hidden switch that will make it available.

Qi compatibility is not the same thing as phone-back compatibility. A watch may work on a compatible wireless charging pad yet still be unable to receive power from a particular phone.
How to charge a compatible older watch from your phone
- Charge the phone above 30%. Samsung says PowerShare will not turn on below 30% when the phone is not plugged in.
- Remove the phone case, especially a thick, rugged, magnetic, or metal-backed case.
- Remove any watch cover or bumper that prevents the watch from sitting flat.
- Move earbuds, headphones, wallets, kickstands, metal plates, and other accessories away from the phone.
- Place the phone face down on a stable surface.
- Open Quick Settings and tap Wireless PowerShare.
- Place the watch’s charging surface against the back of the phone.
- Move it slowly by a few millimeters until the charging indicator appears, then leave both devices still.
The phone’s wireless charging coil is not necessarily at the visual center of its rear panel, so alignment matters. Samsung says PowerShare switches off after 60 seconds if it does not detect another device. A charging animation is only an initial signal: check the watch’s battery percentage after several minutes to confirm that it is actually increasing.
Samsung says the phone can be connected to a charging cable while sharing power, but performance may decrease or fail depending on the charger. For troubleshooting, unplug the phone and retry above 30% battery.
Why charging starts and then stops
A brief charging animation does not prove that the connection can be maintained. Common explanations include:

- The watch is slightly off the phone’s charging coil.
- One device moved or the watch is not sitting flat.
- A case, magnetic accessory, band, bezel, dirt, moisture, or debris is blocking contact.
- The phone reached its PowerShare battery limit.
- The phone and watch are too warm, triggering protective interruption.
- The phone is connected to a charger that does not handle simultaneous sharing properly.
- The watch is a Watch7, Watch Ultra, or Watch8 model that is not officially compatible.
Stop charging if either device becomes unusually hot. Do not attempt it under bedding, in direct sunlight, or inside a thick case. These are practical safety precautions, not proof that heat is the cause of every failed charging attempt.
Test the watch with its dedicated charger
The watch’s normal puck is the quickest way to separate a phone-side problem from a watch-side problem:
- It charges on the puck but not the phone: the watch is probably fine. Investigate PowerShare support, phone battery level, alignment, cases, and interference.
- It charges on neither: check the puck, cable, wall adapter, watch contacts, and the watch itself.
Do not replace the phone or conclude that the watch is broken until it has been tested with its dedicated charger.
What charger should you use instead?
For a Watch7, Watch Ultra, or Watch8, use a charging puck designed for that model. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Charger (Fast Charging) was listed at $39.99 in the U.S. when checked on August 18, 2026. A compatible 10W-or-higher power adapter is sold separately for the stated fast-charging performance.

A multi-device station can make sense for a desk or bedside table, but verify the exact watch model first. Samsung’s Wireless Charger Trio was listed at $85.50 on sale, reduced from $89.99, on August 18, 2026. It is not automatically a replacement for every watch’s model-specific puck, and it is a poor fit if you only need an emergency travel charger.
For an older compatible watch, PowerShare is best treated as an emergency feature: it uses the phone’s battery, is alignment-sensitive, and may be slower than a dedicated charger.
When to contact Samsung
Contact Samsung support or arrange service if:
- A watch model that Samsung lists as compatible still fails after the battery, case, alignment, and interference checks.
- The watch also fails on its dedicated charger.
- The phone or watch becomes abnormally hot.
- Either device has visible damage or liquid exposure.
- Wireless charging stopped after a drop, repair, or other physical incident.
