To use the Powerbeats Pro 2 heart-rate sensor, enable it after connecting the earbuds, then start a workout in Apple Fitness or a compatible app. On iPhone, go to Settings → Powerbeats Pro 2 → Heart Rate Sensor and turn it on. On Android, open the Beats app → Powerbeats Pro 2 → Heart Rate and enable the setting.
The sensor provides workout heart-rate feedback through supported apps and gym equipment. It is not an always-on health tracker, medical monitor, or independent workout recorder.

What you need before starting
- Powerbeats Pro 2 paired with an iPhone, iPad, Android phone, or compatible exercise machine.
- The latest available earbud firmware.
- A secure, comfortable fit with the correct ear-tip size and ear hooks adjusted.
- A compatible workout app or Bluetooth heart-rate-enabled gym machine.
Apple says iPhone users can monitor heart rate while wearing at least one earbud. Android users must wear both earbuds. Availability can vary by country, operating-system version, app version, and region.
Powerbeats Pro 2 does not continuously monitor your heart rate simply because you are wearing it. Monitoring is intended for active workout sessions and pauses when the earbuds are removed or the sensor is disabled. The earbuds themselves do not independently save a permanent heart-rate history; supported apps or Apple Health handle the data. See Apple’s heart-rate guide and the Powerbeats Pro 2 safety information.

Turn on the sensor
On iPhone
- Put at least one Powerbeats Pro 2 earbud in your ear.
- Connect the earbuds to your iPhone.
- Open Settings.
- Tap the connected Powerbeats Pro 2 shown near the top of the screen.
- Turn on Heart Rate Sensor.
Once enabled, open Apple Fitness or a compatible workout app and start exercising. Turn the switch off when you do not want the in-ear sensors active.
On Android
- Put both earbuds in your ears.
- Connect Powerbeats Pro 2 to your Android phone.
- Open the Beats app and select your earbuds.
- Scroll to Heart Rate.
- Turn on Enabled, or use the app’s HRM control where available.
Do not look only in Android’s ordinary Bluetooth settings for the heart-rate control. The Beats app manages the feature, while a compatible workout app or exercise machine displays the reading.
Use Powerbeats Pro 2 with Apple Fitness
- Connect the earbuds and confirm Heart Rate Sensor is enabled.
- Open the Fitness app on your iPhone.
- Choose a workout.
- Start the workout.
- Look for the live heart-rate value in the workout display.
- End the workout when finished.
You can review the resulting workout and heart-rate information in Fitness or Health. If the reading appears as dashes or is dimmed, re-seat the earbuds and check the connection before restarting the workout.

When an Apple Watch is being used during the workout, Apple chooses the heart-rate source it considers highest-confidence at that moment. A separately paired third-party monitor, such as a chest strap, is prioritized when available.

If you work out with an iPhone and Powerbeats Pro 2 but do not wear the Apple Watch, Apple says the Watch should connect to the iPhone by midnight the following day if you want the workout to sync with Activity rings.
View heart rate in Apple Health
- Wear at least one earbud and connect it to your iPhone or iPad.
- Open Health.
- Tap Search in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap Heart, then Heart Rate.
- View the live reading or available heart-rate history.
To identify readings supplied by the earbuds, open Show All Data, select a date, and look for Bluetooth-marked entries. You can also open Data Sources & Access to inspect the Bluetooth-device source.
Health can display or receive the measurements, but Powerbeats Pro 2 is not an independent data logger like a smartwatch.

Use it with third-party workout apps
On iPhone, the documented workflow depends on an app that supports Apple Health/HealthKit. The app may also need permission to read heart-rate data and read or record workouts.

- Enable the sensor in Settings → Powerbeats Pro 2 → Heart Rate Sensor.
- Open the workout app.
- Accept its Apple Health permissions when prompted.
- Start the workout from that app.
- Check whether the app lists Powerbeats Pro 2 or heart-rate data as an available source.
Beats promotes integrations including Fitness, Nike Run Club, Peloton, Runna, Ladder, Slopes, 30 Day Fitness at Home, and ASICS Runkeeper. That does not mean every app supports every feature equally. Some apps import completed Health data, while others require direct Bluetooth heart-rate support.
On Android, compatibility depends more directly on whether the workout app supports the relevant Bluetooth heart-rate integration. Check the app developer’s current documentation before buying if a particular app is essential. Independent testing has reported pairing difficulties with some third-party apps, including Runna; those reports indicate possible compatibility friction, not universal sensor failure. See Wareable’s review for an example of such testing.
Connect Powerbeats Pro 2 to gym equipment
The treadmill, bike, elliptical, or other machine must support compatible Bluetooth heart-rate sensors.
- Wear the earbuds and enable heart-rate monitoring.
- On either earbud, double-press and then hold the “b” button.
- Wait for the tone indicating that the heart-rate sensors are discoverable.
- On the exercise machine, open its heart-rate sensor or Bluetooth accessory menu.
- Select Powerbeats HR, not the ordinary audio connection.
- Wait for the connection tone, then start the workout.
Important limitation: when Powerbeats Pro 2 connects directly to gym equipment for heart-rate monitoring, it disconnects from the iPhone. You cannot play iPhone audio through the Beats while they are connected to the equipment for active heart-rate monitoring.

Use the sensor with Apple TV workouts
Apple’s current documentation supports sending heart-rate data to an iPhone while the earbuds provide audio from Apple TV, but the setup has specific requirements:
- The iPhone and Apple TV must use the same Apple Account.
- The iPhone must run iOS 26 or later.
- Apple TV must run tvOS 26 or later.
This arrangement lets the Apple TV handle workout audio while the iPhone receives the heart-rate information.

The sensor setting is missing
- Connect the earbuds before looking for the setting.
- Wear at least one earbud on iPhone, or both earbuds on Android.
- Update the firmware.
- On Android, check the Beats app rather than system Bluetooth settings.
- Restart the phone and reconnect the earbuds.
The app shows dashes or no value
- Re-seat the earbuds fully.
- Adjust the ear hooks so the earbuds do not shift.
- Confirm the earbuds remain connected.
- Check that the sensor is enabled.
- Clean and dry the sensor surfaces.
- End and restart the workout.
The app does not list Powerbeats Pro 2
Confirm whether it supports HealthKit heart-rate input on iPhone or Bluetooth heart-rate sensors on Android. Grant the requested Health permissions, update the app, and check whether it expects a conventional Bluetooth monitor rather than data supplied through Apple Health.
The gym machine cannot find Powerbeats HR
Enable the sensor first, wear the earbuds, disconnect any existing phone sensor connection, then repeat the double-press, then hold gesture until the discovery tone. Keep the earbuds close to the machine and select Powerbeats HR.

Monitoring stops during exercise
Monitoring pauses when the earbuds are removed and resumes when they are placed back in your ears. Gaps can therefore result from a loose fit, accidental removal, a lost connection, or a disabled sensor.
How accurate is the sensor?
Fit is central to reading quality. Use a tip that seals comfortably, keep the earbuds fully seated, secure the ear hooks, and keep the sensor areas clean and dry. Do not judge performance from one brief spike or dropout. For demanding training, compare the readings with another sensor over several sessions before using them to make important training decisions.
Beats reports more than 1,500 hours of sensor testing with nearly 1,000 athletes. That is a manufacturer-reported testing claim, not an independent guarantee of accuracy for every user, workout, or body type. The feature is intended for fitness feedback and should not replace a clinical heart monitor, medical evaluation, or emergency monitoring.

Is Powerbeats Pro 2 heart-rate monitoring worth using?
It is most useful for iPhone users who already train with Apple Fitness or a compatible HealthKit app, people who want workout feedback without wearing a watch, and athletes who value secure ear-hook earbuds.
It is a poorer fit if you want passive all-day or sleep tracking, medical-grade monitoring, universal Android app support, or iPhone audio while the earbuds are paired directly to gym equipment. An Apple Watch is better for broader activity tracking and background health features; a chest-strap monitor is generally the more appropriate choice for dedicated heart-rate training and broad equipment compatibility.
