watchOS 11 works with Apple Watch Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, Series 9, Series 10, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), Apple Watch Ultra, and Apple Watch Ultra 2. You also need an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18 or later.
Apple released watchOS 11 on September 16, 2024. As of September 2026, it is no longer the newest major watchOS generation, so this is specifically a compatibility check for watchOS 11—not a list of every Apple Watch that can run the newest available watchOS.

A compatible watch is only half of the requirement. To install or update to watchOS 11, the paired iPhone must be:
#1 Best Overall
- S9 SiP Processor: Advanced processor improves overall performance and enables on-device Siri functionality.
- iPhone XS or newer
- Running iOS 18 or newer
An iPhone X, iPhone 8, or another older model cannot update an Apple Watch to watchOS 11, even if the watch itself is a Series 6 or newer. Update the iPhone first if it supports the required iOS version.
GPS and GPS + Cellular versions do not have separate watchOS 11 hardware lists. Cellular activation is a separate matter: it depends on carrier, country or region, and an eligible cellular plan. Family Setup also has additional iPhone and regional requirements.
What “Series 6 and later” means
Apple’s launch wording—“Apple Watch Series 6 and later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) and later, and all Apple Watch Ultra models”—identifies the minimum supported families when watchOS 11 launched. It does not mean every Apple Watch released in the future will be a watchOS 11 upgrade target.

Newer watches introduced after watchOS 11 may ship with a later watchOS generation and may not support downgrading to watchOS 11. Therefore, a newer Apple Watch is not automatically an installation option for this older operating-system version.
Apple Watch models that cannot run watchOS 11
The first-generation Apple Watch, Series 1, Series 2, Series 3, Series 4, Series 5, and first-generation SE are excluded. Apple lists Series 4, Series 5, and the first-generation SE as limited to watchOS 10.6.1 or earlier; older models have earlier software ceilings.
An excluded watch does not become unusable. It can continue running the newest watchOS version Apple provides for that model. Notifications, activity tracking, watch faces, and existing compatible apps may continue to work. However, it will not receive watchOS 11 features, and future app updates or iPhone-pairing requirements may eventually demand a newer watchOS version. Apple does not promise indefinite compatibility.

How to identify your Apple Watch model
If the watch is already paired, the iPhone’s Watch app is usually the easiest way to identify it:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Tap General, then About.
- Find Model Number.
- Tap the part number beginning with “M” to reveal the five-digit model number beginning with “A.”
- Match that A-number with Apple’s Apple Watch identification guide.
The model may also be printed on the back of the case, but case size, finish, and GPS versus Cellular status do not identify the generation reliably. When buying used, ask for the exact Series, SE generation, or Ultra generation rather than relying on the purchase year.
How to install watchOS 11
Apple normally manages the update from the iPhone:
- Update the iPhone to the latest iOS version available to it.
- Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi.
- Open the Apple Watch app.
- Tap My Watch > General > Software Update.
- Download and install the available update.
You can also update directly on a watch running watchOS 6 or later: open Settings > General > Software Update, then tap Install if an update is offered. See Apple’s watchOS update instructions for the current procedure.

- S9 SiP Processor: Advanced processor improves overall performance and enables on-device Siri functionality.
Prepare before updating
- Charge the Apple Watch to at least 50 percent.
- Leave it on its charger throughout installation.
- Keep the iPhone near the watch.
- Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi.
- Do not restart either device during installation.
The download and installation can take several minutes and, depending on the update and connection, about an hour.
What to do if watchOS 11 does not appear
- Check the watch model. Series 5, Series 4, first-generation SE, and older watches are not eligible. A missing update is expected on those models.
- Check the iPhone. It must be an iPhone XS or newer and must run iOS 18 or later.
- Update iOS first. The watch update may not appear until the iPhone has installed its required software.
- Check charging and proximity. Put the watch securely on its charger, keep it close to the iPhone, and verify that the charger is connected to power.
- Restart both devices. Retry the update after restarting the iPhone and Apple Watch.
- Remove a stuck update file. In the Watch app, go to My Watch > General > Storage, delete the downloaded update file, and try again.
- Free storage. Remove synced music, photos, or apps temporarily, then retry. Apple provides additional storage guidance, including a separate and more restrictive process for Series 3.
- Check beta software. If beta profiles are installed, Apple says they may need to be removed before a major update can install.
If the watch is already running a later watchOS generation, do not assume that watchOS 11 can be installed as a downgrade. Software Update generally offers the version compatible with the watch’s current software situation.

No. Hardware-dependent capabilities can vary by Apple Watch model. Health, cellular, language, and regulatory-dependent features may also vary by country or region. In addition, third-party apps can require a newer watchOS version than Apple’s hardware compatibility list does. Compatibility means the operating system can be installed; it does not guarantee identical features or indefinite app support.

Is it worth replacing an incompatible Apple Watch?
If your current watch is excluded, the practical choice is between keeping it while it still meets your needs and replacing it with hardware that has a longer support horizon. A used or refurbished Series 6 through Series 10 or SE 2 can technically run watchOS 11, but in 2026 that should not be the only buying criterion. Newer hardware may offer a longer software life.
Checks for a used or refurbished watch
- Confirm the exact model and case size.
- Check battery health and allow for possible replacement cost.
- Ensure Activation Lock has been removed from the seller’s Apple Account.
- Confirm the watch is not managed by an organization.
- Check display, case, buttons, and water damage.
- For Cellular models, confirm carrier and regional compatibility.
- Choose a return policy that covers pairing and activation problems.
The SE (2nd generation) is the lower-cost compatible family for buyers who need core Apple Watch functions without flagship health hardware. Ultra and Ultra 2 models offer larger batteries and rugged designs but can be expensive and bulky. A newer standard Apple Watch may be better value than an older compatible model if the prices are close. Check Apple’s live Apple Watch page and refurbished store for current availability rather than relying on old prices.
