Elgin’s historical account describes a deliberate turn toward fashion-led watchmaking, drawing on Parisian designers and style authorities; one period advertisement attributed a group of six cases to Lucien Lelong, but that does not mean he designed every Parisienne.
What was the Elgin Parisienne?
Elgin.Watch dates the Parisienne line to 1928 and says it remained on sale until 1933. Its line history describes the watches as colorful, enamel-decorated and modernistic. The name refers to a line, not a single fixed model: individual watches can differ in case design, decoration and movement.

Elgin.Watch reproduces the company’s promotional explanation of its style strategy: “Watches couldn’t just be good… they had to be good-looking as well. Chic. Fashionable.” The company copy says Elgin deliberately pursued a style program and retained Paris authorities including Lucien Lelong, Callot Soeurs, Agnes, Premet and Jenny. That is Elgin’s own historical marketing account, rather than an independent modern assessment. Elgin.Watch’s Parisienne history

There is no single designer attribution established for every watch in the line. Fratello reports that a period advertisement credited six cases to Parisian creator Lucien Lelong. That attribution applies to the Lelong group described in the article; Elgin.Watch’s account names several fashion authorities, so it would be too broad to call all Parisiennes Lelong designs. Fratello also reports that more than 150,000 Parisiennes sold in the first year. The article does not provide the underlying sales record, so treat that figure as Fratello’s reported historical claim, not independently verified factory data.
What does a documented example look like?
Fratello’s 2019 feature describes one particular Parisienne, not a specification applicable to the whole line. Its example has a reported 14k white gold-fill case, cut in front with red and blue enamel; the article also mentions a black-enamel color twin. The movement is identified as an Elgin 488 with a Breguet hairspring, seven jewels and no seconds hand.

The author reports measurements of 26 mm high by 17 mm wide, with a dial slightly larger than 10 mm in diameter. These are measurements of the featured watch. Fratello notes that its example felt smaller in person than it appeared in photographs, an observation about that watch rather than a general rule for wearing Parisiennes.
Fratello places the watch in a broader shift toward wristwatches and reports that by 1935, 85 percent of watches made in American factories were wristwatches, compared with 15 percent in 1920. Those percentages are figures reported in the 2019 article; the article’s reviewed account does not independently establish the underlying industry data. How can you identify an old Elgin women’s watch?
Start with the watch as a set of clues rather than relying on one number or a name printed on the dial. Elgin.Watch says the company began casing watches at its own factory in 1925; before then, movements were sold uncased to jewelers, who could select cases separately. Its identification guide says many models before roughly 1952–54 used style numbers rather than names, while also noting exceptions. A visible number alone therefore does not prove that a watch is a Parisienne or establish its exact model.
- Ask for clear photographs of the dial, front and back of the case, inside of the case back, and movement.
- Record every visible name, number and marking, including those on the movement and case interior.
- Compare the details with a documented Elgin catalog entry or period advertisement. Distinguish the Parisienne line name from a specific model or case designation.
Elgin.Watch describes its catalog as a work in progress and notes that entries may reflect changes in case companies or movements. Use it as a research aid, not conclusive proof; the available sources do not establish one universal Parisienne model number. Elgin.Watch’s identification guide and Elgin.Watch’s catalog

What matters when assessing a Parisienne today?
Because the name covers a line rather than one uniform specification, assess the individual watch on its own evidence. Useful points to document are its design attribution, enamel colors and condition, case material, movement identification, dimensions and the quality of supporting records. The sources here do not establish current availability, market prices, authentication of any listing or a universal specification; a seller’s description should be checked against photographs and markings.
