The right hiking sandal depends on where you’ll wear it: an open design keeps feet cooler and makes debris easier to clear, while a closed-toe hybrid adds protection but feels more shoe-like. No sandal is reliably safe on every wet surface. Use the picks below as a shortlist, then compare fit, support, drainage, and the terrain you actually expect to encounter.
11 women’s hiking sandals to consider
The selections below bring together models identified in 2026 buying guides and reviews. They are not a uniform head-to-head ranking: sources used different testing methods, and a category label or reviewer’s experience is not a guarantee for every wearer or surface. Check the exact model and current women’s sizing before buying.

| Model | What it may suit | Evidence and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Teva Hurricane XLT3 | All-around day hiking | CleverHiker named it its overall pick in its 2026 women’s guide. That designation reflects the publisher’s testing and preferences, not a universal winner. |
| Teva Original Universal | Casual hiking and a lighter, simpler option | CleverHiker named it its budget pick and listed its weight as 10.8 oz per pair. That weight is the reviewer’s figure for the model it evaluated; confirm the specific version. |
| Chaco Z/1 Classic | Versatile use on dry paths and water outings | CleverHiker classified it as versatile. The guide’s category does not establish traction on any particular wet surface. |
| Bedrock Cairn Evo 3D PRO | Those seeking a more trail-focused open sandal | CleverHiker classified it as an all-terrain option. Treat that as the guide’s assessment, not evidence of suitability for technical mountain routes. |
| Xero Shoes H-Trail | Minimalist feel and low weight | CleverHiker named it its ultralight pick. A minimalist sandal may offer less cushioning and protection than a more substantial design. |
| Earth Runners Alpha | Minimalist wear and packability | CleverHiker listed it as runner-up in its ultralight category and reported 8.8 oz per pair. That is the reviewer’s figure for the listed model, not a general weight for the range. |
| Tread Labs Salinas | Shoppers prioritizing arch support | CleverHiker identified it as its arch-support pick. Since arch shape and comfort vary by foot, try it on if possible. |
| Danner Wallowa | Those seeking a more substantial sandal | CleverHiker described it as a burly option. The guide’s label does not establish a particular weight or technical-trail performance. |
| KEEN Newport H2 | Toe protection, stream crossings, and straightforward walks | This closed-toe sandal-shoe hybrid is described as protective, quick-drying, and well-draining in reviews. Outdoor Life’s tester reported a positive experience on wet obstacles, but Woman & Home noted toe rubbing after a 16 km coastal walk and cautioned against assuming it suits very long or true mountain hikes. |
| KEEN Hyperport H2 | Water activities and supportive-feeling wear | Woman & Home highlighted its foam midsole and supportive upper, while Travel + Leisure’s testers preferred it for water sports over hiking. Those are reviewer assessments, not a guarantee of fit or trail traction. |
| Teva Terra Fi 5 Universal | Day hikes and general outdoor use | Woman & Home named it its overall option in a UK-oriented guide. Do not assume that guide’s sizing or pricing context applies to U.S. listings. |
Open sandal or closed-toe hybrid?
Open designs
Open sandals generally offer more ventilation and make it easier to shake out grit. Their exposed toes are more vulnerable to stubs and impacts, and an open fit can let the foot shift if straps are not adjusted well. Minimalist models such as the Xero Shoes H-Trail and Earth Runners Alpha emphasize a lighter, closer-to-the-ground feel; that trade-off may not suit someone seeking substantial cushioning or toe protection.

Models such as the KEEN Newport H2 cover the toes and have a more shoe-like feel. That extra coverage can help on rocky or debris-strewn routes, but it does not make a sandal equivalent to a hiking boot, nor does it guarantee grip. A closed toe can also feel less airy, and the Newport H2 reviewer’s report of toe rubbing after a 16 km walk is a reminder to check toe clearance and hot spots before a long outing.

What matters for wet and dry routes
Grip depends on the surface, not just water-friendly materials
Quick-drying straps and drainage can make a sandal more practical after a stream crossing, but they do not prove that its outsole will grip wet rock. The outsole pattern and compound, the angle and texture of the surface, and your balance all matter. Outdoor Life described deep lugs and siping on the Newport H2 and reported one tester’s positive experience on wet rock and steep dirt. That is one qualitative test account, not a guarantee for all rocks, algae, mud, or wearers.
Support and stability are personal
Compare the footbed’s arch shape, cushioning, flexibility, heel hold, and how securely the straps keep your foot in place. Travel + Leisure’s testing considered comfort, support, adjustment, traction, durability, and hot spots, and its guidance emphasizes stability and suitable outsoles on both wet and dry surfaces. A sandal that feels supportive in one reviewer’s test may not match your arch or foot shape.

Weight and protection involve trade-offs
A sturdier, more protective design can feel bulkier than a minimalist sandal. CleverHiker’s reported weights illustrate differences among its listed models: Earth Runners Alpha at 8.8 oz per pair and Teva Original Universal at 10.8 oz per pair. These are that publisher’s figures for the models it evaluated, not measurements of every version or size.
How to check fit before a hike
- Try both sandals on. Check that your heel sits securely and your toes do not hang over the edge or press against a protective front.
- Adjust every strap. The foot should stay centered without straps pinching, rubbing, or leaving excessive slack. Check whether you can make small adjustments once your feet are warm or damp.
- Walk on an incline and turn. Notice heel lift, sideways movement, pressure points, and whether your toes grip to keep the sandal on.
- Test them on a short, familiar outing first. A dry indoor fit cannot reveal every hot spot, and a comfortable first try-on does not guarantee comfort over a long walk.
If you cannot try them on, review the retailer’s current size guidance and return terms. Do not rely on another wearer’s comfort report as a substitute for fit.

One specification to check by exact model
Teva’s official U.S. Hurricane XLT2 page lists quick-dry webbing made from 100% REPREVE recycled plastic, an adjustable hook-and-loop closure, an EVA foam midsole, and a nylon shank designed to stabilize and support on uneven terrain. Teva gives the women’s size 7 half-pair weight as 7.75 oz. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. The XLT2 is a different model from the XLT3, so do not transfer its listed details or weight to the XLT3.

Water-friendly construction does not make a sandal suitable for every hike. For technical terrain, exposed routes, or long days carrying a pack, consider whether you need more foot coverage, stability, and protection than an open sandal can provide. Woman & Home’s Newport H2 reviewer recommended that model for straightforward walking but cautioned that it may not be ideal for true mountain hikes or very long walks. Treat that as a model-specific review observation, not a rule for every sandal or wearer.
