That blend of restrained looks and unusually broad functionality is either its charm or its dated quirk. Before buying one today, judge the individual watch by whether its analogue and digital features work and by its service condition—not by an old asking price.
What is the TAG Heuer Kirium Formula 1?
It is a discontinued quartz watch combining analogue hands with a digital display and chronograph functions. It is not a mechanical chronograph. Fratello places the model’s launch around 2002 and its discontinuation around 2008; those dates are approximate and come from that publication rather than a model-specific TAG Heuer archive confirmation. Fratello’s 2020 model overview describes the digital information as hidden until activated, preserving the appearance of a dark dial when it is not in use.
The watch belongs to a different era of TAG Heuer Formula 1 than the collection’s original launch. TAG Heuer’s retrospective dates the wider Formula 1 collection’s debut to 1986 and describes its early identity as colorful, quartz-powered and motorsport-inspired. The Kirium F1 is a later, more restrained hybrid-digital interpretation, not one of those original models. TAG Heuer’s collection retrospective supplies that broader context. Fratello attributes the wider Kirium line’s 1997 debut and design to Jorg Hysek through a specialist source it cites; this is an indirect attribution, not an official model-specific confirmation.
What does it do, and what are the reported specifications?
Fratello identifies the movement as a quartz ETA E20.321 and lists a chronograph, day, date, month, 24-hour hand, world time and alarm. The same article reports an approximately 40 mm case, sapphire crystal, 200 m water resistance, and versions on either a steel bracelet or rubber strap. These are secondary-source specifications, not current manufacturer claims or independently confirmed specifications for every example.

The combination makes the watch more than a simple analogue chronograph: it offers multiple timekeeping and calendar functions while retaining conventional hands. But a feature list only matters if the particular watch’s digital display, alarm, chronograph and calendar functions operate correctly. Fratello’s description is a useful guide to the model’s reported functions, not a condition report for a watch on sale.
Does the hidden digital display make it appealing or dated?
The Kirium F1’s defining design decision is to make digital information available without keeping it permanently visible. That gives it a cleaner first impression than many ana-digi watches, while the luminous-tipped hands preserve a conventional watch face. When activated, however, the display makes its early-2000s multifunctional character unmistakable.

- Stainless steel case with a stainless steel bracelet with black ceramic center links
- Stainless steel bezel with a black ceramic top ring showing tachymeter markings. Anthracite sunray dial with luminous silver-tone hands and index hour markers.
- Swiss-automatic Movement
- Case Diameter: 44mm
- Water resistant 200m (660ft): in general, suitable for professional marine activity and serious surface water sports, but not diving
That can read as purposeful period design or as an awkward compromise between analogue and digital. The right answer depends on whether you enjoy the concealed display and want the extra functions. If you prefer a purely analogue dial, or want complications that do not rely on an aging electronic movement, the same feature set may feel like clutter rather than an advantage.
What should you check before buying a pre-owned example?
CL111A appears in an archived Watches.co.uk listing for a Kirium Formula 1 with analogue and digital display. It is a useful reference to search, not evidence of current inventory or proof that every watch advertised under a similar name is the same specification. The archived CL111A listing can help identify the reference; check the case reference on the actual watch and compare it with the seller’s description.

- Confirm identity. Ask for clear photographs of the case reference, dial, caseback and bracelet or strap. Treat CL111A as a search term, then verify that the specific watch matches the reference being offered.
- Test both displays and the functions. Confirm that the hands and digital display work, and ask the seller to demonstrate the chronograph, calendar, world time and alarm rather than relying on a general “runs” description.
- Ask about battery and service history. Find out when the battery was last replaced and whether the watch has been inspected or serviced. A fresh battery does not establish that every function works or that the case remains water-resistant.
- Inspect the included bracelet or strap and overall condition. Establish whether it is the steel-bracelet or rubber-strap version described in the listing, and assess wear, damage and completeness before comparing prices.
- Get a qualified assessment if condition is unclear. Have a watchmaker or TAG Heuer service provider check operation and, if water resistance matters to you, the watch’s current resistance before treating the reported 200 m rating as relevant to your example.
What does ownership and maintenance involve?
A copy of the Kirium F1 user manual hosted on Scribd estimates lithium-battery life at “between 2 to 5 years depending on the frequency of use” of functions, especially the sound alarm and light. The copy’s publication year is not established, so take the figure as the manual’s estimate rather than a guarantee for an individual watch. The manual copy also recommends an annual water-resistance check by a TAG Heuer dealer. Its current policy status is not established; ask a qualified provider about appropriate checks for the specific watch.
For a discontinued quartz watch, purchase price is only part of the decision. Compare the seller’s asking price with the watch’s condition, demonstrated functions, service history and any maintenance it may need. A 2020 Fratello article used a €650 asking price as the prompt for its discussion; it is a historical example, not a current appraisal or value guide. No production total, current market value or accuracy test is established by the cited material.

Is the Kirium Formula 1 worth choosing?
Choose it if the appeal is specifically the contrast between a dark, restrained dial and a concealed digital toolset, and if you can verify the watch’s functions and condition. Pass if you want a mechanical chronograph, a permanently simple display, or a pre-owned watch whose electronic operation and maintenance needs you would rather not investigate. Its character is distinctive; whether that makes it a wrist game or a crying shame is a matter of taste, but a non-working display is a practical drawback, not a design debate.
