The 42 mm Longines Legend Diver No Date is a compelling choice if you want a clean, vintage-inspired dial and an internal rotating bezel—but its 50 mm lug-to-lug length makes fit a serious part of the decision. It is a discontinued model, so the right call depends on the exact watch’s condition, provenance and current asking price, not on old listings or on specifications from today’s smaller Legend Diver.
What makes the no-date Legend Diver distinctive?
The 2007 Legend Diver No Date revisited Longines’ 1960s diver styling, itself rooted in the 1959 reference 7042. Longines and Swatch Group identify that original model as a 42 mm diver with an internal bidirectional 60-minute bezel. The two-crown layout carries the design idea forward: the lower crown operates the watch, while the upper crown turns the internal bezel. The bezel sits beneath the crystal rather than projecting as an exposed external ring.

Fratello’s September 2020 account describes the 2007 no-date model as a 42 mm stainless-steel watch with 22 mm lugs and a 50 mm lug-to-lug measurement. It also describes screw-down crowns, a domed sapphire crystal and a screw-in caseback. Those details belong to the older reference discussed in that article; they should not be assumed to describe every Legend Diver generation.
Will the 42 mm case fit your wrist?
Diameter alone does not capture this watch’s wrist presence. The 50 mm lug-to-lug span is substantial, and the 22 mm lug width gives it a broad strap footprint. Whether it wears well is individual: the available evidence establishes dimensions, not a wrist-size threshold or a hands-on fit test.

- Consider it if: you like a large, legible diver-style watch and your wrist comfortably accommodates a 50 mm span.
- Be cautious if: you prefer compact watches, have found long lugs uncomfortable, or are choosing from photos without a return option.
- Before buying: compare the stated lug-to-lug measurement with a watch you already own that fits well, and check the seller’s return terms.
No date: cleaner dial, fewer calendar conveniences
The central appeal of the no-date version is a dial without a date window interrupting its symmetry. That simplicity is a matter of taste, not a functional advantage for everyone: if you regularly rely on a watch for the date, a date-equipped alternative may suit you better. Fratello framed this as its “Wrist Game or Crying Shame” question: does the cleaner dial make the watch more appealing, or is the absence of a date a deal-breaker?
Do not confuse the older 42 mm watch with the 39 mm generation
The 2007 no-date reference and the newer 39 mm Legend Diver are distinct watches, with different references and movement specifications. Longines and Swatch Group’s official chronology lists the 2007 reference L3.674.4.56.2 as a 42 mm automatic model with calibre L633 and 300 m water resistance. Fratello’s 2020 article identifies an ETA 2824 for the no-date watch it discusses. Because those caliber descriptions differ, check the exact reference and documentation for the particular watch rather than treating either source as a definitive specification for every example.

The newer generation returned in 2023 in a 39 mm case. Longines’ August 2024 release describes its no-date version with calibre L888.6, a silicon balance-spring, up to 72 hours of power reserve, COSC whole-watch chronometer certification, ISO 6425 diver-watch certification and water resistance to 30 bar (300 m). Longines also specifies a bidirectional internal bezel and two crowns, including a screw-down crown at 2 o’clock for bezel operation. These are specifications for the newer generation, not upgrades that can be presumed on the older 42 mm model.
Longines’ official U.S. product page listed the black-dial 39 mm reference L3.764.4.50.0 at $3,500 in August 2026. The listing described a self-winding movement beating at 25,200 vibrations per hour, up to 72 hours’ reserve, a screw-in crown, an internal turning dive flange, 30 bar water resistance, an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, Super-LumiNova and a leather strap. This is a volatile listed price for a different watch, not a direct valuation of the discontinued 42 mm model. In 2025, Longines announced a matte white dial and blue and black rubber straps for the line.

What the old price examples do—and do not—tell you
In its September 30, 2020 article, Fratello reported finding a least-expensive Chrono24 asking price of €3,250 and a seller’s own-site asking price of €3,150. It also mentioned a date-equipped version listed at roughly €1,800 on rubber at that time. These were historical asking prices, not confirmed sale prices or current market values. They reflect particular listings, configurations and geography; they cannot establish what a fair price is now.
For a present-day purchase, compare active listings for the exact no-date reference in similar condition and with similar completeness. The available sources do not establish a current market-wide resale value or verified recent transaction range.

What to check before buying a discontinued example
- Confirm the reference. Ask for clear photographs of the case, dial, caseback and paperwork. Make sure the listing is for the older no-date watch rather than a date version or the newer 39 mm generation.
- Assess condition and originality. Inspect the dial, hands, bezel operation, crown threads, crystal and case for damage or replacement parts. Ask the seller to identify any non-original components.
- Request service documentation. Establish when the watch was last serviced and whether records identify the work performed. Do not assume that age or a running watch proves recent maintenance.
- Check completeness and seller protections. Review what is included, the seller’s documentation and return policy. The sources do not verify any particular current listing, so evaluate each offer on its own evidence.
- Judge the asking price against the exact watch. Compare like-for-like examples and account for condition, service history and completeness. Do not use 2020 listing figures as a present-day benchmark.
So, wrist game or crying shame?
It is wrist game if the long, 42 mm case suits you, you prefer the balanced no-date dial, and you find a well-documented example at a price justified by its condition. It is crying shame if the dimensions are wrong for your wrist, you need a date, or the seller cannot substantiate the watch’s identity and history. The design has a clear point of view; buying one well requires the same clarity about fit and the individual example.
