The Xiaomi Watch 5 was announced internationally at MWC 2026 in Barcelona on February 28, bringing Xiaomi’s largest Wear OS smartwatch to global markets. Its headline features include a 930mAh battery, sapphire glass, EMG-assisted gesture controls, offline maps and dual-frequency L1+L5 GNSS. The most important catch is compatibility: it supports Android 8.0 and later, but not iPhones.
Launch coverage identifies the international model as running Wear OS 6, while Xiaomi’s official page confirms Wear OS by Google, Google Play, Calendar and Gemini support. Local price, availability and some Google and health features vary by country.

What launched globally?
Xiaomi introduced the Watch 5 globally at MWC 2026, following an earlier China-market launch. “Global debut” refers to the international announcement; it does not mean the watch became available for purchase simultaneously in every country.

Xiaomi’s China launch material lists the Watch 5 from RMB 1,999 and the eSIM version from RMB 2,299, but those figures should not be treated as a global MSRP or converted into a U.S. or European price.

The global model should not automatically be treated as identical to an imported China version. Software, Google services, languages, cellular support, regional features and warranty terms can differ. Before buying an imported watch, confirm the exact model number, operating system, region, seller warranty and return policy.
Wear OS 6 brings Google apps to Xiaomi’s watch
Launch coverage describes the global Xiaomi Watch 5 as a Wear OS 6 smartwatch. Xiaomi’s official product page lists Wear OS by Google, Google Play, Google Calendar and Gemini support. The exact software version should be confirmed on the shipping device or current regional documentation rather than assumed from the product name.
In practical terms, Wear OS gives the watch access to compatible Play Store apps and makes it a more conventional Google smartwatch than Xiaomi’s non-Wear OS models. Gemini still depends on setup, internet access, a compatible phone, an appropriate Google account and regional availability. Google Wallet, Maps and other services may likewise vary by country, firmware and account configuration.

Wear OS does not make the Watch 5 equivalent to a Pixel Watch or Galaxy Watch. App support, health platforms, phone integration, update timing and cellular features can differ between manufacturers.
Compatibility: Android only
Xiaomi states that the Watch 5 supports Android 8.0 and later and does not support iOS connectivity. Wear OS branding does not override Xiaomi’s compatibility requirements, so iPhone owners should not buy this watch expecting normal pairing or notifications.
Basic Wear OS functionality may appeal to owners of other Android phones, but Xiaomi’s deepest ecosystem features are reserved for Xiaomi hardware. Smart Hub functions require a compatible Xiaomi phone or tablet running the latest compatible HyperOS 3 version, the current Mi Fitness app, Xiaomi Home 10.4 or later, Smart Hub enabled and compatible devices visible in the integrated hub.

Gesture controls use EMG, PPG and motion sensors
The Watch 5’s gesture system combines EMG sensors, which detect electrical signals associated with finger movement, with PPG and IMU motion sensors. Xiaomi positions this as a way to control selected watch actions without touching the screen.
- Pinch twice: answer-related actions such as hanging up an incoming call, snooze an alarm, trigger remote photography or start and stop a timer.
- Rub twice: turn off an alarm.
- Snap fingers: launch a workout, according to Xiaomi’s described custom gestures.
- Shake the wrist twice: launch functions such as an alarm, stopwatch, weather or world clock.
Launch coverage also describes wrist rotation as a customizable gesture, but its exact assignments and availability should be checked in the shipping software.
These are conditional controls, not universal hands-free replacements for touch. Xiaomi says users must enable Tilt-to-wake and Gestures, hold the forearm roughly parallel to the chest, keep the watch face upward and use gestures on supported screens marked by a floating bubble or blue dot. Gestures may be unavailable during sleep, Do Not Disturb, detected sleep, always-on-display use or on unsupported pages. The watch should also be updated to the latest system software.
Without hands-on testing, it is not possible to say how reliably the gestures work while walking, exercising or wearing different clothing, or how often accidental triggers occur.
Dual-band GNSS and offline maps target outdoor users
The Watch 5 supports dual-frequency L1+L5 GNSS across five satellite systems. It also offers offline vector maps, route navigation, track-back navigation and route-deviation alerts, according to Xiaomi’s official specifications.
Dual-frequency positioning can help receivers reject some reflected signals, known as multipath errors, in places such as cities, wooded areas and mountainous terrain. It is not, by itself, proof that every recorded route will be more accurate than a Pixel Watch, Galaxy Watch or Garmin. Antenna design, satellite visibility, firmware, terrain, atmospheric conditions and track processing all matter.

Offline maps must be downloaded separately through the Mi Fitness smartphone app. That means the watch can be useful away from mobile data after setup, but it is not necessarily ready for independent navigation straight out of the box. Wait for a satellite lock before starting an activity, and judge accuracy over repeated routes rather than a single track.

Xiaomi’s launch material describes a 47mm case. Buyers should confirm the dimensions, weight, strap and color selection for their market. Sapphire is highly scratch-resistant, but it is not scratch-proof or shatter-proof; hard impacts can still chip or fracture it.
Battery: an ambitious claim backed by a large cell
The Watch 5 uses a 930mAh battery and a dual-chip design combining the Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 platform with a BES2800BP low-power chip. Xiaomi advertises:

These are Xiaomi test figures, not guaranteed real-world runtimes. The Smart-mode scenario includes factory-default settings, high-precision sleep monitoring, all-day stress, blood oxygen and heart-health monitoring, 100 messages per day, six call alerts, three alarms, eight NFC payments, 300 wrist raises per day, 30 minutes of Bluetooth calls per week and 180 minutes of GNSS exercise recording per week, alongside periodic music playback and synchronization.
Always-on display, frequent GPS workouts, Bluetooth calling, music, high brightness, continuous health monitoring, intensive Wear OS apps and poor Bluetooth conditions can reduce endurance. The large battery is one of the Watch 5’s strongest specifications, but independent testing is needed to compare it fairly with other Wear OS watches.
Health and fitness features
Xiaomi advertises one-tap health assessment, heart-rate monitoring, blood oxygen tracking, sleep and stress monitoring, ECG analysis where enabled, more than 150 sports modes, workout guidance and Health Connect integration.

Availability can depend on country, firmware, regulatory approval and phone compatibility. ECG and other health functions should be treated as wellness features unless specifically approved for a medical use in the buyer’s market. They are not a substitute for professional diagnosis.

Xiaomi ecosystem advantages—and restrictions
Xiaomi-phone owners are the clearest target. The Watch 5 can connect to Xiaomi Smart Hub, control compatible smart-home devices, operate a paired phone camera and participate in HyperOS ecosystem functions. Health data can also transfer through Health Connect.
However, Smart Hub is not a generic Wear OS feature. Its stated requirements include a Xiaomi phone or tablet running HyperOS 3, the latest Mi Fitness app, Xiaomi Home 10.4 or later, an enabled Smart Hub and compatible connected devices. Owners of other Android phones may still receive Wear OS apps, Google services and standard smartwatch features, but they should not expect Xiaomi’s full cross-device experience.

Important buying checks
- Confirm the phone: Android 8.0 or later is required; iPhones are unsupported.
- Confirm the region: Check your country’s Xiaomi store for price, stock, colors, cellular options and health-service availability.
- Confirm the software: Do not assume an imported China model has the global Wear OS software or Google services.
- Check ecosystem requirements: HyperOS 3, Mi Fitness and Xiaomi Home 10.4 or later may be required for Smart Hub features.
- Set realistic expectations: Six-day battery life and dual-band GNSS are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance verdicts.
- Check calling needs: Xiaomi says voice calls from third-party apps are not currently supported.
- Prepare maps: Download offline maps through Mi Fitness before leaving phone coverage.
Should you buy the Xiaomi Watch 5?
Consider it if you want a large Android smartwatch with Google Play, a substantial battery, sapphire protection, offline maps and dual-frequency GNSS. It is especially compelling on paper for Xiaomi-phone owners who can use Smart Hub and other HyperOS features.
Wait for local availability or independent testing if you need proven GPS, heart-rate, sleep or gesture performance, broad third-party calling, or a dependable comparison with Pixel Watch and Galaxy Watch models. Avoid assuming that a China import is the same product as the global edition.
The Xiaomi Watch 5’s specifications make it an unusually ambitious Wear OS entrant. Its real value will depend on regional software support, shipping firmware, measured battery life and whether the gesture and navigation features work as consistently outside Xiaomi’s stated conditions as they do on paper.
