Water Lock is a software feature that disables the Apple Watch touchscreen when it is wet or submerged, preventing accidental taps and swipes. When you turn it off, the watch plays tones that help eject water from the speaker. It does not make the watch waterproof, improve its water-resistance rating, or make an unsuitable model safe for diving, showers, saunas, or chemicals.
What Water Lock actually does
Water Lock has two practical functions:
- It blocks touchscreen input. Water droplets, wet fingers, clothing, or splashes can otherwise trigger unintended taps and swipes. With Water Lock enabled, the display intentionally does not respond to touch.
- It helps clear water from the speaker. When you unlock the watch, it emits a sequence of tones designed to move residual water out of the speaker opening.
This is not a physical lock, waterproof seal, or hardware protection mode. It helps the watch behave reliably around water; it does not prevent water from entering the device.

How to turn Water Lock on
- Press the side button to open Control Center.
- Tap the Water Lock button, shown as a water-droplet icon.
- Look for the droplet icon at the top of the watch face. Touch input is now disabled.
Water Lock can also activate automatically when you start a supported water-based workout, such as swimming or surfing. It starts automatically when you begin a scuba dive with an Apple Watch Ultra. Apple Watch Ultra and later models can also be configured to turn it on automatically when submerged to a depth of 10 centimeters or less. That automatic-submersion behavior does not apply to every Apple Watch model.

On watchOS 9 or earlier, Apple’s Control Center instructions used a different access gesture: touch and hold the bottom of the display, then swipe up.

How to turn Water Lock off and eject water
- After leaving the water, press and hold the Digital Crown.
- Keep holding it until the display shows Unlocked.
- Allow the tone sequence to finish.
The tones may sound unusual, and you may see or feel moisture leave the speaker area. This process targets water remaining in the speaker. It does not dry the entire watch or remove water from every opening.
If your watch runs watchOS 8 or earlier, rotate the Digital Crown instead of pressing and holding it.

Why does the screen stop responding?
A wet touchscreen is vulnerable to accidental input: droplets and wet contact can be interpreted as taps or swipes. Water Lock prevents that input while you swim, deal with heavy splashing, or wear the watch in the rain.
The watch is not frozen or malfunctioning when the display ignores your finger during Water Lock. Use the Digital Crown to unlock it. Apple also notes that Double Tap and wrist-flick gestures are unavailable while Water Lock is enabled.

Is your Apple Watch safe in water?
Water Lock is not required for an Apple Watch to have its stated water resistance. It is an operational safeguard that helps prevent accidental screen interaction and provides a speaker-clearing cycle.

These ratings are not depth permissions for every activity. A 50-meter rating does not mean that a Series 2 or later watch is suitable for diving to 50 meters. Water resistance can diminish over time. Impacts, such as dropping the watch, can compromise seals, and Apple says water resistance cannot be rechecked or resealed by Apple.
Water, activities, and materials to avoid
Apple advises avoiding or limiting exposure to:
- Soap and soapy water, including shampoo, conditioner, detergent, and cleaning products
- Perfume, solvents, acids, lotions, sunscreen, oils, hair dye, and insect repellent
- High-velocity water for models other than Apple Watch Ultra or later
- Cliff diving and high diving
- Steam rooms
- Saunas for models other than Ultra or later; Ultra models should not be used in saunas above 55°C (130°F)
The band matters too. Leather bands, Milanese Loop, Link Bracelet, and some Modern Buckle and Hermès bands are not water resistant. A water-resistant watch does not make a non-water-resistant band suitable for swimming.

What to do after swimming or getting the watch wet
- End the workout if one is running.
- Unlock Water Lock and let the speaker-ejection tones play.
- For Series 2 and later, gently rinse the watch with lightly running, warm, fresh water if it has been exposed to pool or ocean water.
- Dry the watch, band, and skin with a soft, nonabrasive, lint-free cloth.
- Let remaining moisture evaporate naturally.
Do not use heat, compressed air, sprays, sharp objects, or forceful shaking to remove water. Apple’s speaker and microphone troubleshooting guidance specifically advises against these methods.
If the speaker still sounds muffled
Temporary muffling immediately after swimming is common while water remains around the speaker. First confirm that Water Lock is off and that the tone sequence has completed. Wipe the watch, place the speaker or microphone side down on a lint-free cloth so visible water can drain, and allow it to dry naturally. Apple says leaving the watch charging overnight may speed evaporation.
Do not insert anything into the speaker or microphone ports, and do not repeat aggressive drying methods. If audio remains distorted, crackling, intermittent, or muffled after the watch has dried, contact Apple Support or arrange service rather than assuming another eject-water cycle will fix it.

If the altimeter seems inaccurate after swimming, water in the air vent can temporarily affect barometric-altimeter measurements on Series 3 and later. Accuracy should return after the water evaporates.
Using Water Lock in the shower may prevent accidental taps, but it does not make soapy water safe. Chemicals can negatively affect water seals and acoustic membranes. Likewise, using Water Lock with an older, damaged, or unsuitable watch does not protect it from liquid ingress.
