The Zenith Chronomaster Revival ‘Shadow’ (ref. 97.T384.4061/21.C822) is a 37 mm, microblasted-titanium chronograph with a matte black dial and date-free El Primero 4061 movement. It turns the shape of the A384 into a darker, lighter-looking contemporary watch, but it is a reimagining—not a direct copy—of the 1970 prototype Zenith cites as its inspiration.
What the Chronomaster Revival Shadow is
Zenith presents the Shadow as an imaginative completion of an obscure black chronograph prototype from 1970. The company says that prototype had a manual-winding chronograph movement; the modern Shadow uses an automatic El Primero instead. Zenith’s own release explicitly says the watch “reimagines what could have been, rather than directly reproducing a historical Zenith timepiece.” The prototype story is Zenith’s account, not an independently corroborated history in the sources available here. Zenith’s 2020 press sheet and Hodinkee’s 2020 launch coverage provide the launch context.
Case and dial: compact, dark, and deliberately low-gloss
37 mm A384-derived form in titanium
The 37 mm case follows the form of Zenith’s A384, but replaces steel with microblasted titanium. The fine, matte finish reinforces the Shadow name and avoids the reflective look of polished steel. The finish and material are defining parts of the watch’s character, not a claim that the historic prototype used the same construction.
Black dial with grey chronograph registers
The matte black dial sets off grey counters and a tachymeter scale. White Super-LumiNova on the hands and applied markers is specified to glow green in darkness. The result keeps the chronograph display legible through contrast while maintaining a monochrome palette.

- Zenith Chronomaster Revival El Primero Chronograph Automatic White Dial Men's Watch 03.A384.400/21.C815
Rubber strap
Zenith specifies a black rubber strap with a Cordura effect, white stitching, and a microblasted titanium pin buckle. The sources do not state its width or establish which replacement straps fit, so check fitment with Zenith or a seller before ordering alternatives.
El Primero 4061 movement and chronograph layout
The Shadow uses Zenith’s automatic El Primero 4061, a column-wheel chronograph operating at 36,000 vibrations per hour (5 Hz), with at least 50 hours of power reserve. The display is date-free in the sources consulted.

Hodinkee noted at launch that the A384 Revival used the El Primero 400 and praised the Shadow’s no-date execution; that is the reviewer’s assessment, not a measured performance comparison. Hodinkee’s introduction discusses the distinction.
Water resistance and practical limits
The stated water-resistance rating is 5 ATM. That is the specification given by Zenith; it should not be treated as a guarantee of suitability for a particular water activity. Follow the maker’s guidance for use and care.
Price and availability depend on market
Zenith listed a launch price of CHF 8,400 in its 2020 English press sheet, and Hodinkee reported the same launch figure. Retail listings observed on 7 October 2026 show different local prices and stock statuses; these are page observations, not a universal current manufacturer price.

Hodinkee said at launch that Zenith had not specifically stated the watch was limited; that 2020 report does not establish its current production status.

Who should consider the Shadow?
- It may suit you if you want a compact 37 mm automatic chronograph, value a matte titanium case and black-and-grey dial, and prefer a display without a date.
- Look more closely before buying if you need verified accuracy, long-term reliability or service-cost data, a specific water-use capability, or confirmed aftermarket strap compatibility. Those points are not established by the cited launch specifications and listings.
- Decide based on the actual offer rather than comparing a retailer’s local listing directly with the 2020 Swiss-franc launch figure. Currency, market, stock, and warranty terms differ.
