This review covers the current Zenith Pilot Automatic, specifically the 40 mm black ceramic reference 49.4000.3620/21.I001, with the 40 mm steel reference 03.4000.3620/21.I001 as a comparison. Zenith lists the ceramic model at $10,700 on its US product page and the steel at €8,500 on its Spanish page; those are market-specific displayed prices, not a direct price comparison. The specifications make the watch easy to assess on paper, but case size, fit, legibility and comfort need to be judged in person.
Which Zenith Pilot is under review?
“Zenith Pilot” names a collection, not a single watch. The current lineup includes the Pilot Automatic and Pilot Big Date Flyback, alongside special editions. This review focuses on the standard Pilot Automatic, not the chronograph-equipped Big Date Flyback. Zenith’s collection page shows multiple Pilot Automatic variants, so reference numbers matter when comparing prices or included straps. Zenith’s US Pilot Automatic collection provides the current family listing.
The primary subject is the black microblasted ceramic Pilot Automatic, reference 49.4000.3620/21.I001. The closest comparison here is the black-dial stainless-steel Pilot Automatic, reference 03.4000.3620/21.I001. Zenith lists both at 40 mm and equips them with its El Primero 3620 automatic movement. Their cases, supplied straps and cited market prices differ.

These are Zenith’s published specifications, not results from independent testing. Product pages can change, and the cited prices are not a like-for-like comparison: one is a US listing and the other is a Spanish listing. Zenith’s US collection page displayed Pilot Automatic variants at $8,400 and $10,700 when accessed in 2026. Confirm the exact reference and local price before buying. What changes between the ceramic and steel models?
Case material and appearance
The central distinction is material: the reviewed reference uses black microblasted ceramic, while the comparison model uses stainless steel. Both have a black dial with horizontal grooves and large luminous Arabic numerals. The stated case diameter is the same, so the published specifications do not suggest a size difference; they do not establish how either watch will sit on a particular wrist.
Straps included
Zenith lists two straps with each reference. The ceramic watch comes with black and khaki cordura-effect rubber; the steel watch with black cordura-effect rubber and brown calfskin. The brand describes the straps as interchangeable, but compatibility of third-party replacements is not established here. Confirm attachment dimensions and reference-specific fit before purchasing another strap.

- TITANIUM CONSTRUCTION: The P-51 is built with high-grade titanium for strength and comfort. It's twice the strength and half the weight of steel. The primary advantage of a titanium watch is its ability to be tough and not heavy at the same time. A titanium watch won't crack regardless of the abuse it gets. Price and market
The cited prices reflect different countries and should not be used to conclude that ceramic costs more or less than steel. Taxes, local availability, retailer terms and later price changes can affect what a buyer actually pays. Check the relevant country’s current product listing for the precise reference.
Movement, reserve and water resistance
Zenith specifies the ceramic model’s El Primero 3620 as an automatic movement running at 36,000 vibrations per hour, or 5 Hz, with approximately 60 hours of power reserve. The steel product page identifies the same movement family and lists the same frequency and approximate reserve. These figures are manufacturer specifications; no independent accuracy or reserve test is available here.

Zenith lists 10 ATM water resistance for both references. That is a manufacturer rating, not an independent assessment of a specific watch’s condition or seals. For swimming or other water exposure, follow Zenith’s use guidance and ensure the watch is in suitable condition; a rating alone does not establish suitability for every activity.
Design and aviation heritage
Zenith describes the contemporary Pilot collection as a redesign drawing on aviation past and present. In its 2023 launch material, the brand says the dial’s horizontal grooves recall corrugated metal fuselages, and points to the large luminous numerals, oversized crown and artificial-horizon motif on the movement rotor as aviation-inspired details. These are Zenith’s design explanations rather than independent historical findings. Zenith’s 2023 Pilot launch material also says the company filed the French term “Pilote” as a trademark in 1888 and the English term “Pilot” in 1904. Zenith connects its history with early aviation, including Louis Blériot; those heritage claims are presented here as the brand’s account.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the Zenith Pilot Automatic worth buying?
On the published specification sheet, the Pilot Automatic combines a 40 mm case, a high-frequency automatic movement, an approximately 60-hour stated reserve, 10 ATM water resistance and two included straps. Whether that package justifies its local price depends on the exact reference, how the case and straps suit you, and the seller’s terms. No independent hands-on assessment establishes wrist comfort, actual lume performance, timekeeping, durability or long-term service experience, so those should be treated as open questions rather than assumed strengths.

Zenith has also presented blue-dial Boutique Editions of the Pilot Automatic and Pilot Big Date Flyback, as well as a vintage “ICONS: PILOT” capsule of restored and certified watches. These are collection context, not interchangeable alternatives to the two standard references compared above. Zenith’s pressroom article describes those editions.
