Its appeal is clear as a design-led collectible; its practical merits are harder to judge because publicly available specifications for reference ZO9704 come chiefly from an individual seller listing, and there is no hands-on evidence here for legibility, comfort, accuracy, or reliability.
What is the Zodiac Olympos Mystery Dial?
It is a limited-edition version of Zodiac’s modern Olympos, commonly identified in resale material as reference ZO9704. The model revives the collection’s unusual floating-hand idea rather than using a conventional set of centrally mounted hands. WatchTime reported that the Olympos returned in 2018 in two limited editions, one of them the Mystery Dial; the article said both had sold out through Zodiac by September 2019. Zodiac’s own history dates the Olympos launch to 1970 and describes it as using the Astrographic’s floating hands in a more classic execution. How does the mystery dial work?
The defining feature is the floating-hour display: the hour indication appears to move across the dial without the familiar visual arrangement of conventional hands. The floating-hand concept is the central design point, but the sources available do not establish how quickly or easily this particular watch can be read in everyday conditions. That is a question best assessed in person rather than inferred from photographs or heritage descriptions.

Zodiac’s current Olympos collection page describes the family’s quadrant dial finish, manta-ray-shaped case, Italian leather strap, and STP 1-11 automatic movement. Those are collection-level details; the page does not identify the ZO9704 or verify that it uses the STP 1-11. The seller’s STP-313 claim for this limited edition should therefore remain separate. Design and heritage: the strongest reason to consider it
The Olympos combines a shaped case with an unconventional display, giving the Mystery Dial a more characterful profile than a straightforward dress or sports watch. Zodiac’s historical account ties the floating hands to the earlier Astrographic concept while describing the Olympos as its more classic interpretation. The modern reissue is best understood as a continuation of that visual idea, not a strict reproduction of a particular vintage reference.
The case shape is part of the collection’s identity: Zodiac calls it manta-ray-shaped on the current family page. WatchTime’s 2019 discussion describes a 37.5 mm case and offset crown for the standard modern Olympos, but those details are not verified specifications for the Mystery Dial ZO9704. How it differs from the vintage Olympos Mystery Dial
The ZO9704 is a modern limited-edition reissue; an original 1970s Olympos Mystery Dial is a different watch with its own reference, dimensions, condition, and movement. For example, a vintage dealer listing identifies one original as reference 702-918, with a 35 mm case and 18 mm lug width. When comparing them, assess the display, case measurements, movement, and condition separately. Do not assume a modern reissue shares the vintage watch’s proportions or mechanics simply because both carry the Mystery Dial name.

Is the limited edition compelling in actual use?
As a design object, the Mystery Dial has a clear point of difference: the floating-hour display and shaped Olympos case give it a specific visual identity, while the seller-reported run of 82 pieces would make it relatively scarce if accurate. As an everyday watch, the evidence is less conclusive. No cited source establishes its real-world legibility, wrist comfort, timekeeping performance, long-term reliability, or service costs.

- Fit: ZO9704 dimensions are not established here, so neither standard-model nor vintage measurements should be used to predict its wrist presence.

- Daily wear: The seller reports 5 ATM / 50 m water resistance and a leather strap. Those details do not establish dive suitability, and the strap is not a reason to treat the watch as intended for water use.
- Collecting: A limited-run designation alone does not establish value. Verify the individual watch’s authenticity, condition, completeness, and service history before buying.
Availability and price: what the record can and cannot tell you
WatchTime reported the two 2018 Olympos limited editions sold out through Zodiac by September 2019.
