Most costly watch-repair mistakes start with treating a delicate, sealed instrument like an ordinary household object. Routine external care is different from opening the case: once you disturb the back, handle movement parts, or affect a seal, you can introduce dust or compromise water resistance. These ten pitfalls explain what you can reasonably check yourself—and when to stop and use qualified service.
1. Assuming water resistance lasts forever
A water-resistance rating describes a watch under specified conditions; it does not mean the watch will remain sealed indefinitely. Gaskets age, and impacts can impair the seal. Hamilton recommends an annual water-resistance check at an authorized service center, while Bucherer also advises periodic testing as gaskets deteriorate. Follow the care guidance for your specific model rather than relying on its original rating alone. Hamilton care guidance; Bucherer watch-care guidance.
2. Opening the case without accounting for the seal
Removing a case back can admit dust and disturb the seal. A repair manual advises checking the back seal after opening, but a visual check does not establish that the watch is water-resistant again. If the case has been opened, do not assume that simply closing it restores its previous protection; ask a qualified service provider whether the seal needs attention and testing. Watch-repair manual.
3. Treating every battery change as risk-free
A battery replacement sounds simple, but it involves opening the case. Citizen warns that opening the back yourself can let dust or debris inside, potentially stopping the watch or impairing water resistance. Citizen recommends professional replacement; Casio directs customers to the original retailer or an authorized service center. Procedures vary by model, so check the manufacturer’s guidance before deciding that a do-it-yourself change is appropriate. Citizen battery guidance; Casio watch support.

Ask whether the service includes the test appropriate to your model; do not infer water resistance from a case that looks closed. Casio watch support; Hamilton care guidance.

8. Ignoring magnetism when a mechanical watch changes pace
Magnetic fields can cause a mechanical watch to run fast, run slow, or stop. That makes magnetism one possible explanation for a timekeeping change—not a diagnosis based on the symptom alone. Bucherer describes demagnetization by a service expert, and Patek Philippe recommends an official service center or authorized retailer for demagnetization. Bucherer watch-care guidance; Patek Philippe care and service.
9. Continuing to use a watch after water gets inside
Moisture inside the case needs prompt attention. The Japan Clock & Watch Association explains that water ingress can damage both mechanical and electronic components and advises arranging immediate repair. Do not treat continued operation as proof that the watch escaped damage. Japan Clock & Watch Association guidance.

10. Treating a symptom as a diagnosis
A watch that stops or keeps poor time may have more than one possible cause. The watchmaking education document emphasizes identifying the cause before attempting a repair. Avoid opening the case or adjusting a movement based on a symptom alone; ask a watchmaker to diagnose the issue when the cause is unclear. American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute education information.
What is reasonable to do yourself?
Keep the distinction simple: external upkeep is not the same as internal repair. Routine care that does not require opening the case is different from battery replacement, movement diagnosis, or work that must restore and test water resistance.

A watch-repair manual lists precision watchmaker screwdrivers among repair tools, but owning a tool does not provide the skill, clean working conditions, or pressure testing needed for delicate movement and water-resistance work. The manual is old and hosted by a third-party mirror, so it supports the tool category—not a particular modern kit or recommendation. Watch-repair manual.
