Seiko’s 2019 Seiko 5 Sports relaunch was a broad collection of automatic watches, not a single model and not a like-for-like technical replacement for the SKX divers. Seiko specified its 4R36 movement across the relaunch, while case details and styling varied by reference. The launch examples had 10-bar water resistance; the cited launch material does not establish them as certified dive watches.
What Seiko relaunched in 2019
Seiko announced the relaunch on 7 August 2019, with availability planned for September. Its UK-facing/global announcement described 27 executions across five styles: Sports, Suits, Specialist, Street and Sense. Seiko’s Japanese announcement, also dated 7 August, described 15 models debuting in Japan on 7 September 2019; it said the Japanese launch initially had no Sense model. The figures describe different market and lineup presentations, not conflicting counts for one universal launch lineup. Seiko’s global announcement and its Japanese announcement provide the regional details.

Movement and specifications
Seiko specified its automatic Caliber 4R36 for the relaunch collection. It has 24 jewels, a stated 41-hour power reserve and a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour (6 beats per second). The movement supports manual winding and hacking: the seconds hand stops when the crown is pulled out, allowing the wearer to set the time more precisely. These are manufacturer specifications, not results from independent testing.
For the launch examples described in the global release, Seiko listed a 42.5 mm case diameter, 13.4 mm thickness, Hardlex crystal, see-through screw case back, 10-bar water resistance and magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m. The release also distinguishes case finishes and bracelet or strap configurations. Treat those dimensions as details for the described examples, not as universal specifications for every later Seiko 5 Sports watch. Verify the exact reference before comparing fit or construction.

Styles and example references
The five style labels—Sports, Suits, Specialist, Street and Sense—organize a varied, style-led line. Seiko’s announcement names several references as examples, but not every reference was offered in every market or with the same configuration.
| Reference | Configuration described in Seiko’s launch announcement |
|---|---|
| SRPD51 | Steel bracelet with a secure-lock, push-button clasp |
| SRPD73 | Bracelet with a sliding clasp |
| SRPD76 | Rose-gold-color-coated steel case and silicone/calf hybrid strap |
| SRPD77 and SRPD79 | Black hard-coated steel cases and nylon straps |
These are examples, not a complete catalogue. Monochrome’s 2019 review lists additional regional variants, including SRPD51K1, SRPD53K1, SRPD55K1, SRPD57K1, SRPD59K1, SRPD61K1, SRPD63K1 and SRPD65K1. Suffixes can identify different market or strap configurations, so match the full reference—including its suffix—to a model-specific specification before buying or comparing watches. Monochrome’s 2019 review documents those variants.
Is the 2019 Seiko 5 Sports an SKX or a dive watch?
It is best understood as an SKX-influenced redesign rather than an identical SKX or a confirmed technical substitute. Seiko Design says reference SRPD55K3 carries the SKX’s design DNA, but also describes rethinking the predecessor’s diver-watch specifications during the redesign. That supports a design connection, not a claim that the new watch retains the SKX’s technical status. Seiko Design’s account explains the design intent.
Seiko’s launch release gives 10-bar water resistance for the specified examples. The sources cited here do not establish a diver certification for the SRPD launch models. Water resistance alone should not be treated as proof of compliance with a diver-watch standard. If that distinction matters for your use, check the documentation for the exact reference and the applicable standard rather than relying on the family name or styling.

2019 launch prices by market
Seiko’s prices were suggested retail prices at launch and are not current street prices, resale values or a direct currency comparison.
| Market and source | 2019 suggested price | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Japan — Seiko Watch Corporation | ¥30,000–¥38,000 | Before tax; Japanese launch pricing |
| Europe — Seiko Watch Corporation | Approximately €280–€340 | Approximate European recommended retail prices in the UK-facing/global announcement |
Both prices are from Seiko’s 2019 announcements: the Japanese release and the UK-facing/global release. They do not establish what a particular reference costs today; current availability and pricing depend on market, condition, seller and configuration.
What to check when comparing or buying
Start with the exact reference and suffix, then compare the details that determine whether two watches are genuinely comparable:
- Case and wear: Confirm diameter and thickness for the exact reference rather than assuming the launch-example measurements apply.
- Movement: Check the stated caliber and whether manual winding and hacking matter to you.
- Water resistance and standards: Distinguish a water-resistance rating from documented compliance with a diver-watch standard.
- Crystal, bezel and case: Compare the actual materials and features listed for each reference.
- Bracelet or strap: Match the supplied configuration; do not assume a strap fits another reference without checking attachment dimensions and compatibility.
- Price and region: Compare listings for the same full reference, condition and market, and distinguish current seller pricing from Seiko’s dated launch MSRP.
The sources cited here do not provide a complete, matched specification comparison against a particular SKX reference. A fair comparison therefore requires choosing the exact Seiko 5 Sports and SKX references first, then checking their model-specific documentation side by side.
