What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Short answer: No smartwatch currently measures blood glucose by itself. The reliable setup is a separate continuous glucose monitor (CGM) worn on the body, with the smartwatch displaying the CGM’s readings, trend arrow, and alerts. In the United States, the best phone-free option is a compatible Apple Watch paired directly with a Dexcom G7 or G7 15 Day.
Best overall: Apple Watch Series 11 + Dexcom G7. Best battery life: Apple Watch Ultra 3. Best value for iPhone users: Apple Watch SE 3. Best Android-oriented option: Samsung Galaxy Watch7 with a compatible third-party CGM display app, after verifying support for your exact sensor and phone.
This distinction matters medically. The FDA warns consumers not to use smartwatches or smart rings that claim to measure or estimate blood glucose without piercing the skin. The watches below display data from an authorized CGM; they are not glucose meters.
What a smartwatch with a blood-sugar monitor really is
The watch is the screen, not the glucose sensor. A CGM sensor measures glucose in interstitial fluid through a small sensor inserted under the skin, sends the data to a compatible receiver, phone, or watch, and the watch presents that information on its screen. It is more accurate to say that these watches display CGM glucose readings than to say they measure blood sugar.

Those features are not interchangeable with an FDA-authorized blood-glucose meter or CGM. As of August 9, 2026, the FDA has not authorized, cleared, or approved a smartwatch or smart ring to measure or estimate blood glucose on its own.

Prices are U.S. starting prices or MSRP listed in the supplied manufacturer material as of the August 9, 2026 research date. They do not include the CGM, sensors, insurance costs, a receiver, or third-party software. Direct-to-watch availability also depends on the exact watch, phone, operating-system, app, CGM model, and region.
1. Apple Watch Series 11: best overall
Buy it if: you use an iPhone and want the broadest combination of official CGM support, ordinary smartwatch features, alerts, and the option to leave your phone behind while viewing Dexcom data.
The Series 11 is the best all-around choice because it supports both major official Apple Watch glucose-display routes:
- Dexcom G7 and Dexcom G7 15 Day: compatible sensors can connect directly to the Apple Watch through Dexcom Direct to Watch.
- FreeStyle Libre: Abbott offers a Libre watch app for compatible Apple Watch models paired with an iPhone. This is a phone-relayed, tethered experience rather than the same direct sensor-to-watch arrangement offered by Dexcom.
With Dexcom Direct to Watch set up, the watch can show the current glucose number, trend arrow, graph, and alerts without the iPhone being nearby. Dexcom says Direct to Watch is currently compatible only with Apple Watch, which is the main reason Apple is ahead of Wear OS for phone-free glucose viewing. See Dexcom’s current Apple Watch compatibility list and the U.S. Series 11 store page.
The Series 11 starts at $399 in the United States. That buys a smartwatch display; it does not include the recurring cost of Dexcom or Libre sensors.
Why it is the best fit
- Best official CGM support among mainstream smartwatch ecosystems.
- Direct-to-watch Dexcom readings are the strongest option for temporary phone-free use.
- Useful safety, activity, health, and communication features beyond glucose display.
- More practical price and size than the Ultra 3 for most people.
What to check before buying
- Apple Watch does not work with Android phones.
- Dexcom Direct to Watch requires compatible iPhone, Apple Watch, sensor, app, iOS, and watchOS versions.
- Libre’s watch app requires the watch to remain within range of both the iPhone and the sensor.
- The watch is not a replacement for the primary CGM app, receiver, or blood-glucose meter when the CGM instructions call for confirmation.
2. Apple Watch Ultra 3: best for battery life and outdoor use
Buy it if: you want the same official Apple Watch CGM pathways but place a high value on battery life, a larger brighter display, GPS, rugged construction, or long outdoor activities.
The Ultra 3 uses the same glucose-display methods as the Series 11: Dexcom G7/G7 15 Day Direct to Watch and the compatible Abbott Libre Apple Watch app. It does not measure glucose more accurately because it is an Ultra. The CGM sensor still does all the measuring.

It starts at $799 in the U.S.; see Apple’s specifications and purchase page.
Why it is worth considering
- Longer battery life reduces the chance that the watch is dead during a workout, hike, trip, or overnight period.
- The larger display can make a trend arrow and graph easier to read at a glance.
- Its outdoor and safety features suit users who already need a rugged training watch.
- Dexcom Direct to Watch does not require cellular service for the sensor-to-watch Bluetooth connection.
Important limitations
The Ultra 3 is a premium watch, not a premium glucose sensor. If glucose display is your only reason for buying it, the Series 11 or SE 3 may deliver the same underlying CGM information for much less.
Cellular also does not automatically make every Dexcom feature phone-independent. Direct sensor readings and Dexcom Share/Follow are separate functions. When the phone is left behind, sharing behavior can require Wi-Fi on the watch, and cellular alone may not provide identical sharing behavior in every mode. Confirm the current requirements in Dexcom’s Share and Direct to Watch guidance.
3. Apple Watch SE 3: best value for iPhone users
Buy it if: you mainly want glucose readings, trend information, and alerts on your wrist and do not need the Ultra’s battery life or premium construction.

The SE 3 is listed by Dexcom as compatible with Direct to Watch and is compatible with the Abbott Libre watch app when the required watchOS version and iPhone pairing are in place. It starts at $249 for the 40mm GPS model in the U.S., according to Apple’s SE 3 store page.
For the core job—putting a CGM number, trend arrow, graph, or alert on your wrist—the SE 3 can be a sensible lower-cost entry point. It is particularly appealing if you already own an iPhone and are not interested in paying for the Ultra’s larger battery and rugged features.
Who should choose it
- iPhone users who want the lowest-cost current Apple Watch in this comparison.
- Dexcom users who want Direct to Watch without buying a premium watch.
- Libre users who want Abbott’s official Apple Watch display.
- Families or first-time smartwatch buyers who need basic wrist access rather than an endurance watch.
Who should skip it
- People who regularly cannot charge a watch every day or two.
- Users who need the largest display or the strongest outdoor battery performance.
- Anyone assuming the lower watch price eliminates the ongoing cost of CGM sensors.
Compatibility is not determined by the watch name alone. Check the exact iPhone, iOS, watchOS, CGM, and app versions before ordering.
4. Samsung Galaxy Watch7: best Android-oriented CGM display setup
Buy it if: you use Android, do not want an Apple Watch, and are comfortable installing and maintaining a third-party glucose-display workflow.
The Galaxy Watch7 is not a glucose meter and Samsung does not currently provide a native FDA-authorized glucose sensor in the watch. Its place on this list comes from Wear OS compatibility with third-party tools such as Gluroo, Nightscout-based displays, xDrip+ integrations, or GlucoDataHandler. The exact method depends on the CGM, phone app, data source, account configuration, and software versions.
Gluroo publicly documents real-time CGM display features for Wear OS and names Samsung models including the Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra. This is useful for Android users, but it is not equivalent to Dexcom’s officially documented sensor-to-Apple-Watch connection. The watch may depend on a phone app, notification relay, internet connection, cloud service, or intermediary data bridge. Third-party software may not be FDA-reviewed or approved and should not automatically be treated as suitable for dosing decisions.
Samsung’s June 2026 U.S. MSRP list places the Galaxy Watch7 Bluetooth model at $249.99. Samsung’s compatibility guidance also makes clear that current Galaxy Wear OS watches require Android phones and are not compatible with iPhones.
Advantages
- The strongest practical direction for Android users who want glucose information on a Wear OS watch.
- Access to Samsung Health activity, sleep, heart, body-composition, and lifestyle context alongside CGM data.
- More conventional smartwatch and fitness features than a dedicated CGM receiver.
Risks and trade-offs
- There is no single universally supported Samsung-to-CGM path comparable to Dexcom Direct to Watch.
- A phone, cloud connection, or third-party bridge may be required for current data.
- App permissions, Android battery optimization, notifications, and software updates can interrupt the display.
- Compatibility can change when the CGM app, Android version, Wear OS version, or watch firmware changes.
Galaxy Watch8 caveat: Galaxy Watch8 runs Wear OS 6, but the current public Gluroo material supplied for this comparison explicitly documents Wear OS 4/5 support and names Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra rather than confirming Galaxy Watch8. Do not buy a Watch8 for glucose display on the assumption that any Wear OS app will work. Obtain confirmation from the app developer for the exact Watch8 model and software version first. See Samsung’s Watch8 page and Gluroo’s current compatibility information.
Choose the CGM before choosing the watch
The watch is often the least important part of the glucose setup. Start with the sensor you use or plan to use, then check whether its official app supports your phone and watch.
Dexcom G7 and G7 15 Day
Dexcom G7 and Dexcom G7 15 Day both use the Dexcom G7 app and support Apple Watch Direct to Watch. The standard G7 lasts up to 10 days plus a 12-hour grace period. G7 15 Day lasts up to 15 days plus a 12-hour grace period and is intended for adults 18 and older. See Dexcom’s G7 comparison and sensor-wear guidance.
Dexcom G6 does not support Direct to Watch, so a buyer with G6 should not assume that upgrading to an Apple Watch creates phone-free glucose viewing. Confirm the CGM model, not just the brand, in Dexcom’s G6 Direct to Watch FAQ.

At the August 9, 2026 research date, Dexcom’s current G7 compatibility checker listed minimum iOS 18.6.0 and minimum watchOS 10.6.1, with support extending through iOS 26.5 and Android 16. The same checker listed phone-free Apple Watch support across several generations, including Series 6 through Series 11, SE 2, SE 3, Ultra, Ultra 2, and Ultra 3. Because compatibility changes, use the checker for the exact devices you intend to buy rather than relying on an older FAQ that still mentions iOS 17 or an older app version.
FreeStyle Libre
Abbott’s official Libre watch app is currently available for Apple Watch and supports Apple Watch Series 4 or later running watchOS 10 or later. It can show glucose readings, trend arrows, historical information, and notifications, but the watch app mirrors the phone experience. The watch must remain within range of both the connected iPhone and the sensor. It is not a direct sensor-to-watch system equivalent to Dexcom Direct to Watch.
To check compatibility, use Abbott’s Apple Watch compatibility page, Libre app support section, and watch-notification guidance. Android users may need notification mirroring or a third-party bridge; do not describe that as official Android watch support.
Other CGMs
If you use Libre 2 Plus, Libre 3 Plus, Stelo, Eversense, or another system, check that manufacturer’s current U.S. app and wearable support. A smartwatch may display data through a third-party service even when the CGM maker does not offer a native watch app, but that adds another possible point of failure and may have different medical-use limitations.
Phone-free viewing: what the phrase really means
Not all watch connections are equal. Ask which of these four arrangements you are actually getting:
- Direct sensor-to-watch Bluetooth: Dexcom G7 Direct to Watch on a compatible Apple Watch. This is the clearest phone-free option after setup.
- Official CGM watch app relayed through the phone: Abbott’s Libre Apple Watch app. The phone must remain nearby.
- Third-party integration: A documented tool such as Gluroo or a compatible data bridge. Reliability and requirements vary.
- Notification mirroring or cloud retrieval: The watch may show a notification or cloud value, but the phone, internet, or cloud service may still be essential.
LTE on the watch does not automatically mean that the watch can connect directly to a CGM sensor. It provides a cellular data connection; it does not add a CGM radio protocol or turn the watch into a medical device.
How to set up glucose display on an Apple Watch
Dexcom G7 Direct to Watch
Use the current Dexcom instructions and compatibility checker before starting. The usual path is:
- Install or update the Dexcom G7 app on the compatible iPhone.
- Open Connections in the Dexcom G7 app.
- Select Direct to Watch.
- Follow the on-screen pairing instructions.
- Install the Dexcom G7 Apple Watch app if prompted.
- Start or transition to a sensor as instructed by Dexcom.
- Confirm that the watch displays the glucose number, trend arrow, graph, and alerts.
Dexcom documents this Connections > Direct to Watch route in its setup instructions. A sensor can be paired with only one smartwatch at a time.
If an orange phone icon appears beside the watch reading, Direct to Watch is temporarily unavailable and the watch is relying on the phone. Keep the iPhone nearby until the direct connection is restored. The icon is not evidence that the watch has started measuring glucose independently.
FreeStyle Libre Apple Watch app
- Update the Libre app on the iPhone.
- Open the iPhone’s Watch app.
- Find Libre in the available apps list and install it, or open the App Store on the watch and search for Libre.
- Open the watch app.
- Complete onboarding on the iPhone.
- Accept the one-time disclaimer on the watch.
- Confirm that the active sensor and paired iPhone are in range.
Abbott’s Libre getting-started guide says the watch app should not be used to make treatment decisions. Follow the instructions in the primary phone app and use the appropriate meter or approved device when confirmation is required.
Android setup: why it requires more checking
There is no equally simple, universally official Dexcom or Abbott direct-to-watch path for Android in the supplied U.S. compatibility information. A typical third-party workflow may involve the CGM’s phone app, a data-sharing service, an intermediary such as Nightscout, and a Wear OS watch app or watch face.

Before buying a Galaxy Watch7 or another Wear OS watch, verify all of the following with the specific app developer:
- Your exact CGM model and app are supported.
- Your Android phone model, Android version, and region are supported.
- Your exact watch model and Wear OS version are supported.
- The workflow provides current values and trend arrows, not merely occasional notifications.
- It continues to work when the phone is locked, the screen is off, or battery optimization is enabled.
- You understand whether the data is transmitted directly, through Bluetooth, through the cloud, or through a third-party server.
- The app’s medical-use disclaimer is appropriate for your intended use.
Tools that may appear in Android CGM workflows include Gluroo, Nightscout wearable displays, xDrip+ integrations, and GlucoDataHandler. Their availability and behavior can change, so treat the developer’s current documentation as the source of truth.

Alerts and medical safety
A vibration on your wrist is convenient, but it is not automatically a dependable substitute for the primary CGM alert. Bluetooth loss, a dead phone or watch, a force-closed app, disabled notifications, Focus or Do Not Disturb, battery optimization, muted audio, and operating-system updates can all affect what reaches the wrist.
In February 2025, the FDA warned that smartphone settings, operating-system updates, hardware changes, and device configurations can cause users to miss critical diabetes-device alerts. After setup or an update, test the low, high, urgent-low, signal-loss, and technical alerts that matter to you. Keep the primary CGM app, receiver, or another approved alert path available when your treatment plan requires it.
CGM values also are not necessarily identical to an immediate blood-meter reading. The CGM is sampling interstitial fluid rather than drawing blood at the wrist, and readings can differ from symptoms or expectations, particularly when glucose is changing. Follow Dexcom or Abbott instructions and your clinician’s plan. If the reading does not fit how you feel or what you expect, use the appropriate confirmation method rather than making a treatment decision from a watch complication alone. See Dexcom’s G7 guidance and Abbott’s Libre resource hub.
Troubleshooting when the watch stops showing glucose
- Check that Bluetooth is enabled on the relevant devices.
- Confirm that the sensor is within its specified range.
- Open the primary CGM app on the phone and check whether it is receiving data.
- Make sure the CGM app has not been force-closed.
- Confirm that watch notifications and the watch app are enabled.
- Review Focus, Do Not Disturb, battery optimization, background-app, and notification-suppression settings.
- Reopen the watch app or complication.
- Restart the phone and watch if necessary.
- Check that the CGM app, phone OS, watch OS, and watch model remain supported.
- Until the display is restored, use the CGM receiver, primary phone app, or blood-glucose meter according to the CGM instructions.
For FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus, Abbott identifies a sensor range of approximately 33 feet and recommends checking Bluetooth, restarting the phone, and ensuring the app was not force-closed when signal loss occurs. See Abbott’s signal-loss troubleshooting steps.

- Generic marketplace watches claiming to read blood sugar: do not treat a product page, customer review, or wellness graph as evidence of FDA authorization.
- A watch that advertises blood-sugar trends without naming a CGM: ask what device actually measures glucose and whether it is authorized for the intended use in the United States.
- Huawei watches marketed as glucose monitors: Huawei describes its high-blood-sugar-risk assessment as a research feature supported only in mainland China, not as a U.S. blood-glucose reading. See Huawei’s own support page.
- K’Watch Glucose as a current retail choice: it remains a research and development project in the supplied evidence, not a generally available FDA-authorized U.S. consumer product. Its clinical-trial record is available at ClinicalTrials.gov.
- Any device claiming to replace a CGM or meter with no body-worn sensor: the medically credible recommendation is none.
Other watches worth knowing about
Garmin
Garmin may appeal to endurance athletes because of its battery life, GPS, training features, and fitness-focused displays. Garmin has a Dexcom Connect IQ widget, and users may also encounter Nightscout, xDrip+, and other third-party CGM watch faces.
These are CGM-display options, not glucose sensors. Support can depend on the Garmin model, phone, CGM data source, and bridge. Garmin is worth considering when training features matter more than a fully official, phone-free glucose path.
Google Pixel Watch 4
The Pixel Watch 4 is a current Wear OS smartwatch with U.S. pricing from $349.99, but its glucose display depends on third-party apps and the exact Wear OS version. The supplied public Gluroo material focuses on Wear OS 4/5, so Pixel Watch 4 should not be described as fully verified for glucose display without confirmation from the chosen app developer. Check Google’s specifications and the app’s current support list.
Which smartwatch should you choose?
Use an iPhone, Dexcom G7, and want to leave the phone behind: choose the Apple Watch Series 11. Choose the Ultra 3 instead if battery life and outdoor use justify the extra cost.
Use an iPhone and want the lowest watch price: choose the Apple Watch SE 3, provided its display, battery, and feature set meet your needs.

Use an iPhone and FreeStyle Libre: choose a compatible Apple Watch. Remember that the Libre watch app requires the iPhone and sensor to remain in range.
Use Android: start with the CGM and then verify a third-party Wear OS workflow. The Galaxy Watch7 is the clearest documented choice in this comparison. Do not assume Galaxy Watch8 or Pixel Watch 4 compatibility merely because both use Wear OS.
Use Dexcom G6: an Apple Watch can still display CGM information through supported phone-based methods, but G6 does not support Direct to Watch. Do not buy a watch expecting G7-style phone-free operation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not want to wear a sensor: there is no medically credible mainstream smartwatch recommendation for standalone blood-glucose measurement.
Need readings for insulin dosing or have a serious hypoglycemia risk: prioritize the CGM manufacturer’s approved app or receiver, the device labeling, and your clinician’s instructions. Treat the watch as a convenience display, not automatically as the primary treatment-decision device.
Consider the total cost
The watch price is only the entry point. Budget for:
- The smartwatch.
- CGM sensors and their replacement schedule.
- Prescription or over-the-counter CGM eligibility, insurance coverage, deductibles, and copays.
- A compatible phone and, where needed, a receiver.
- Potential third-party software, cloud hosting, or data-bridge costs.
- Replacement bands, overpatches, or skin-protection products.
A $249 watch is therefore not a $249 blood-sugar-monitoring solution. It is a $249 display that still depends on the CGM system and its ongoing supplies.

Can an Apple Watch measure blood sugar without a CGM?
No. A compatible Apple Watch can display readings from Dexcom or FreeStyle Libre, but it does not independently measure blood glucose. The CGM sensor worn on the body performs the measurement.
Can I leave my phone at home while checking glucose?
With a compatible Apple Watch and Dexcom G7 or G7 15 Day using Direct to Watch, the watch can receive sensor readings directly after setup. FreeStyle Libre’s Apple Watch app requires the iPhone and sensor to remain in range. Android Wear OS solutions generally depend on a phone, cloud service, or third-party bridge, so verify the exact workflow before relying on it.
Is Samsung Galaxy Watch better than Apple Watch for glucose monitoring?
Not generally. Apple Watch has the strongest officially documented path because Dexcom Direct to Watch currently supports Apple Watch and Abbott offers an Apple Watch Libre app. Galaxy Watch7 is the more practical Android option, but its glucose display is app-dependent and usually relies on third-party software.
Can I use a smartwatch reading to decide how much insulin to take?
Follow the CGM’s labeling and your clinician’s instructions. A watch is a secondary display, and its reading or alert can be delayed, interrupted, or different from a blood-meter reading. When readings do not match symptoms or expectations, use the appropriate confirmation method specified by the CGM manufacturer.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy the CGM first and treat the watch as its display. For U.S. iPhone users, the Apple Watch Series 11 paired with Dexcom G7 is the best overall and most reliable phone-free combination. Choose the Ultra 3 for battery life, the SE 3 for lower cost, or a Galaxy Watch7 only when you use Android and accept a third-party setup. No watch in this comparison measures blood glucose on its own, and no watch should replace the approved CGM app, receiver, meter, or medical instructions.
