A Brief History of Cartier, Jaeger-LeCoultre and eBay

Cartier’s Santos and Tank tell one design story; Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso tells another. Here are their origins and the limits of eBay authentication for second-hand watches.

Cartier’s Santos and Tank grew from distinct design ideas; Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso began as a way to protect a watch during polo. If you are exploring these watches second-hand on eBay, its authentication service may help check a qualifying listing—but it does not establish a watch’s accuracy, service history or complete condition.

Three designs, three different stories

Watch Origin story Signature feature
Cartier Santos Cartier dates Louis Cartier’s watch for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont to 1904. The maison says it answered his wish to read the time in flight without letting go of the controls to check a pocket watch; Cartier describes it as one of the first wristwatches. A square case with visible screws, shaped for a legible wrist-worn watch.
Cartier Tank Cartier dates its creation to 1917 and credits Louis Cartier with its shape. Two parallel brancards frame the case, carrying the design from a square dial into a rectangular bracelet.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Jaeger-LeCoultre traces the design challenge to 1930 and says the Reverso was created in 1931. A case that swivels to protect the watch glass, later also used for personalization or a second display in some models.

These are the maisons’ own accounts of their designs, not a universal ranking of which watch was first. Cartier says watches began appearing in its Maison registers in 1853. Its Our Style page recounts the Santos story and dates the Tank’s creation to 1917.

Cartier: the Santos and Tank

The Santos: reading time in flight

Cartier’s 1904 Santos story connects a practical need with a new way to wear a watch. The problem was not simply keeping time: Santos-Dumont wanted to read it while flying without releasing the controls to retrieve a pocket watch. Cartier calls the resulting Santos one of the first wristwatches. That phrasing is the maison’s characterization; it should not be read as an uncontested historical ranking.

The Tank: geometry as identity

Cartier dates the Tank’s creation to 1917 and credits Louis Cartier with its shape. Its parallel brancards—the side elements that frame the case—are the defining visual feature in the maison’s account. The design’s rectangular form continues from dial to bracelet, making the watch recognizable through its outline as much as its details.

Jaeger-LeCoultre: the Reverso

Jaeger-LeCoultre gives 1833 as the founding year of its Manufacture. The Reverso story starts nearly a century later, with a practical challenge posed in 1930: protecting a watch’s glass during polo matches. The maison credits businessman César de Trey with the flip-case idea, his friend Jacques-David LeCoultre with producing the watch, and designer René-Alfred Chauvot with its design. Jaeger-LeCoultre dates the Reverso’s creation to 1931.

The reversible case turned protection into part of the watch’s identity. The case could swivel so its solid reverse faced outward during play. Over time, that surface became a place for personalization; some current Duoface and Duetto models also use the reverse side for a second display. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso history reports that the range has developed more than 50 calibres, a current brand-reported total.

What eBay authentication does—and does not—tell you

Authentication eligibility depends on the marketplace, listing and item. The rules below refer to eBay’s cited US and France materials; they should not be applied automatically to other countries or to every listing.

United States: check the listing and current terms

  • eBay’s US materials describe mandatory authentication for certain qualifying items at or above US$2,000. Eligible wristwatches priced from US$500 through US$1,999.99 may have an optional add-on service.
  • A cited eBay page lists an US$80 add-on fee. Fees and eligibility can change, so check the live listing and current terms before relying on that amount.
  • eBay’s vintage-watch policy allows certain replacement parts in specified circumstances, including some parts no longer made by the original manufacturer and commonly replaced items such as straps, crystals, spring bars or gaskets. The policy distinguishes these cases from customized watches; inspect the listing and current eligibility rules.

eBay says its expert verification checks authenticity and whether the watch conforms to the listing details. The US service is not affiliated with or endorsed by the brands sold on eBay. It does not test timekeeping accuracy or waterproofing, and it is not a substitute for service by an experienced watchmaker. See eBay’s US watch authentication information and vintage watches policy for current terms.

France: regional requirements apply

eBay France lists Cartier and Jaeger-LeCoultre among eligible watch brands, but brand eligibility alone does not qualify every listing. The cited regional rules also impose category, badge, seller, buyer and shipping requirements; for the described service, qualifying items must be listed and shipped from France, Italy or Germany. Check the eBay France watch authentication rules rather than assuming these conditions apply on eBay.com or another marketplace.

How to assess a second-hand Cartier or JLC listing

Authentication is one input, not a full condition report. Before buying, compare the actual watch and listing against the points that matter for that particular model and era:

  • Eligibility: Confirm the authentication badge and the applicable country’s current terms on the listing itself.
  • Identity: Check the stated model and reference against the watch and the listing photographs. Ask the seller about discrepancies or missing details.
  • Parts and originality: Read the description for replaced or customized parts. A permitted replacement does not by itself establish that every component is original.
  • Condition and service: Look for specific service records and condition details. Authentication does not test accuracy or waterproofing; a vintage or used mechanical watch may need an assessment by a qualified watchmaker.
  • Purchase terms: Review the return terms and shipping details before committing.

Can a Jaeger-LeCoultre archive extract authenticate a watch?

No. Jaeger-LeCoultre says its archive extract documents original technical details based on information supplied by the owner, but does not describe the watch’s current state and cannot be considered an authenticity certificate. The cited service page lists a CHF 300 fee and an approximate two-month delivery after payment; both the fee and timing should be confirmed with the maison because they may vary. Details are on Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Extract from the Archives page.

For readers who want a deeper reference on the Reverso’s history, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s current Collectibles book page reports more than 160 archival documents, 44 calibres, over 100 references and 237 dials. These are figures stated by the maison for the book; they are not a substitute for identifying an individual watch. See Jaeger-LeCoultre The Collectibles for details.
