Grönefeld began as a family watchmaking business in Oldenzaal, the Netherlands. Brothers Bart and Tim built on that tradition after specialist careers in Swiss high-complication watchmaking, launching their first watch in 2008 and developing a brand known for technically ambitious mechanisms and meticulous finishing. This history follows the story through the June 30, 2021 feature and then dates later developments from Grönefeld’s official timeline.

Who are Bart and Tim Grönefeld?

The brothers grew up around their family’s watch and jewelry business in Oldenzaal. In a 2021 account, Fratello traces that workshop tradition to their grandfather Johan, who entered the watchmaking profession in 1912, opened a workshop and boutique on Steenstraat, and maintained the clock in the tower of the local basilica. Johan’s son, Johannes “Sjef” Grönefeld, continued the work. Grönefeld’s official timeline records Sjef’s birth in 1941 and his joining his father’s business in 1962.

Bart and Tim each trained as watchmakers in the Netherlands before pursuing specialized work abroad. Their paths converged at Renaud et Papi in Switzerland, where, according to Fratello’s 2021 feature, Bart concentrated on chronographs, minute repeaters, and grand sonneries, while Tim focused on tourbillons and movement regulation. The article reports that their complementary strengths earned them the nicknames “Tick Tock” and “Ding Dong.”

How did the family workshop become an independent brand?

Bart’s route included training at the Watchmakers of Switzerland Training and Educational Program (WOSTEP) in Neuchâtel, a job at Asprey in London, and a return to WOSTEP before he joined Renaud et Papi. Tim trained in the Netherlands and entered Renaud et Papi as a tourbillon and regulation specialist. Their experience gave them a foundation in complex mechanisms and the finishing required to make them work reliably.

The brothers returned to the Netherlands in 1998 and opened a workshop in Oldenzaal. They first serviced watches and carried out finishing work for others, then began developing watches under their own name. Fratello dates the first drawings for their debut model to 2004 and its release to 2008.

Which watches established Grönefeld’s identity?

Year Model What it added
2008 GTM-06 Grönefeld’s first release, combining a one-minute tourbillon and minute repeater, according to Fratello’s 2021 history.
2010 One Hertz An independent jumping-seconds mechanism, which the company’s timeline describes as the first of its kind in a wristwatch.
2014 Parallax Tourbillon A flying tourbillon, central seconds, and a raised chapter ring intended to address parallax when reading the time.
2016 1941 Remontoire An eight-second remontoire intended to deliver more consistent force to the balance; the first Grönefeld watch in the 1941 case.

GTM-06: a debut built around sound and motion

The 2008 GTM-06 brought together two complications associated with the brothers’ specialist backgrounds: a one-minute tourbillon and a minute repeater. The repeater chimes the time on demand, while the tourbillon is a rotating regulating assembly. This combination set an early pattern for watches that made their mechanics part of the experience rather than hiding them behind a simple display.

One Hertz: seconds on their own train

Introduced in 2010, the One Hertz separates its dead-beat seconds from the hours-and-minutes timekeeping train. The seconds hand advances in distinct one-second steps; its independent gear train has its own mainspring barrel. Grönefeld’s timeline calls it the world’s first wristwatch with an independent jumping-seconds mechanism. That “world’s first” description is the company’s claim.

Parallax Tourbillon: a tourbillon designed for reading

The 2014 Parallax Tourbillon placed a flying tourbillon and central seconds hand prominently on the dial. Fratello explains that the raised chapter ring helps reduce parallax error—the apparent shift in a hand’s position when viewed from an angle. The central seconds hand can also be stopped when setting the time. Grönefeld’s timeline records the model’s award in the Tourbillon category at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG).

1941 Remontoire: regular energy delivery

Introduced in 2016, the 1941 Remontoire takes its name from Sjef Grönefeld’s birth year. Its remontoire releases energy to the balance every eight seconds, aiming to even out the force delivered by the mainspring as it unwinds. The company identifies it as the first Grönefeld watch to use the 1941 case. Its timeline also records a GPHG Men’s Watch-category award.

What followed the 1941 Remontoire?

Fratello’s 2021 history describes the Principia as Grönefeld’s first automatic caliber. It also reports that the 2019 Decennium Tourbillon marked the brothers’ tenth anniversary as independent watchmakers and was limited to 10 pieces. These models extended the range beyond the early complication-focused milestones without changing the brand’s emphasis on movement design and finish.

The June 30, 2021 feature reported a team of 15 and a move to a larger workshop. Those are figures for that period, not current staffing or production data. Grönefeld’s timeline dates the team’s relocation to 2021 and places the premises at Sint Plechelmusplein in Oldenzaal.

How has Grönefeld’s collection developed since 2021?

Grönefeld’s official timeline records the 1941 Grönograaf and 1969 DeltaWorks in 2022, followed by the 1944 Tanfana and 1941 Quadrivium in 2026. Its current collection pages list these alongside earlier models. The timeline shows how the range has grown, but the watches differ in complications and design; a model name alone does not establish that they share a movement or function.

1941 Quadrivium: the 2026 announcement

In an announcement dated September 23, 2026, Grönefeld said the 1941 Quadrivium combines a 7.5-second remontoire, one-minute flying tourbillon, central jumping seconds, and power-reserve indicator. The company specifies a 50-hour power reserve and a case measuring 40.0 mm in diameter and 11.3 mm in height. It announced a premiere edition of 28 tantalum-cased pieces, followed by a planned 28-piece platinum edition. These are company-announced specifications and edition plans, not independently tested results or confirmation of completed deliveries.

Grönefeld says the name Quadrivium refers to arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy—the four disciplines it describes as an integrated whole in classical scholarship.

What makes a Grönefeld watch different?

The history points to a combination of family watchmaking, specialist experience, and mechanisms chosen for a clear technical purpose. The One Hertz separates seconds from the main timekeeping train; the Parallax Tourbillon brings the rotating regulator and seconds display forward while addressing angled reading; and the Remontoire meters energy at regular intervals. The Quadrivium announcement combines several of these ideas in one watch.

Finishing is also central to the brand’s identity, rooted in the brothers’ early work servicing and finishing watches before they launched their own models. The available sources document the designs and mechanisms, but do not establish a hands-on comparison of finishing quality against other watchmakers.

Can you order a Grönefeld watch?

Availability can change. At the time represented by its current homepage notice, Grönefeld says: “Due to high interest and limited capacity, we will unfortunately not be able to accept orders for the time being.” The company provides a retailer-finding route, but that does not establish stock or authorization at any particular retailer. Check the brand’s current notice and confirm details directly with a retailer before placing an order.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
