“Digital” does not have to mean electronic. In this five-watch roundup, it describes time read from numerals or a distinctive display rather than conventional central hands: the examples range from a prompted LED readout and a hybrid LCD-OLED screen to mechanical jumping hours, rotating satellites and prism-projected numerals. Only the Hamilton American Classic PSR is a relatively accessible alternative; the other watches are high-end collector pieces. The prices and availability below reflect a Fratello article published July 14, 2023, not current buying information.
What “digital” means in this roundup
The label covers two different ideas. Electronic watches generate a digital readout with LEDs or an LCD-OLED display. Mechanical watches can also show time as numerals, using discs, apertures or rotating satellites instead of familiar hands. These are not equivalent technologies, but they share an unusual way of presenting the time.
The Chanel Monsieur Blue Edition is the broadest case: its hour appears as a numeral through an aperture, while subsidiary minute and seconds displays retain hands. The collection is therefore about display style, not a strict division between handless and electronic watches.
Five watches, five ways to read the time
Girard-Perregaux Casquette 2.0: a prompted electronic display
The Casquette 2.0 revives the original Casquette, which Fratello says was produced from 1976 to 1978. The revival pairs ceramic with Grade 5 titanium and uses the GP3980 movement. Its LED display shows time, day and date when prompted, a design that conserves battery power rather than keeping the readout continuously visible. Additional functions include month, year, a second time zone, chronograph and a secret date.

MB&F HM8 Mark 2: numerals projected toward the wearer
The HM8 Mark 2 uses a modified Girard-Perregaux base caliber and an MB&F module to display jumping hours and trailing minutes. Sapphire prisms magnify the numerals and redirect them 90 degrees to a vertical display, so the wearer reads the time from the side of the watch rather than looking down at a conventional dial. Fratello reports a 22K gold rotor.

Urwerk UR-120: time on rotating satellites
The UR-120 replaces a conventional hour-and-minute layout with a mechanical display built around rotating satellites. Fratello characterizes its look as industrial and futuristic. That makes it the most mechanically unconventional read in this group: rather than checking a familiar numeral window or screen, the wearer interprets the satellites’ motion and position.

Chanel Monsieur Blue Edition: a mechanical jump hour with subsidiary hands
An indigo disc bearing 12-hour numerals rotates beneath an aperture to show the hour. Minute and seconds sub-dials use hands, so the Monsieur Blue Edition is not entirely handless; it belongs here because the main hour display is a rotating numeral disc. Fratello describes the case as white gold.

The PSR combines LCD and OLED technology in a retro-styled digital display. Fratello identifies black PVD and gold PVD variants. Which kind of “no hands” suits you?
- For a screen-like digital readout: the Casquette 2.0 and Hamilton PSR use electronic displays; the Casquette’s readout appears when prompted.
- For mechanical numerals: the HM8 Mark 2 projects jumping hours and minutes, while the Chanel uses a numeral disc for its hour display.
- For a display unlike a conventional dial: the UR-120’s rotating satellites are the most distinctive mechanism in the group.
- For a more accessible price tier: the Hamilton PSR is the standout, though Fratello’s 2023 price range should not be assumed to match current listings.
Fratello’s July 14, 2023 feature is a stylistic roundup, not a standardized hands-on comparison. It does not provide a consistent basis for ranking the watches on legibility, accuracy or wearability; the clearest distinction is how each presents time.
