For Philippe Delhotal, Hermès watchmaking begins with a distinctive form and a story—not a contest to lead on performance metrics. In a 2025 interview with Monochrome Watches, the Creative Director describes a design language shaped by the wider Hermès house, the craft behind a watch, and the way a complication can serve a visual idea. The H08 offers a concrete example: an urban sports watch whose unusual case shape and monopusher chronograph were developed to work as one design.
What makes Hermès watches distinctive?
Delhotal frames Hermès watchmaking as a house-specific creative language, not simply an effort to compete through technical specifications. “We’re not about performance. Our goal is to evoke emotion through storytelling,” he says in the 2025 Monochrome Watches interview.
That emphasis on form has a long history in the brand’s watch design. Delhotal says, “Since 1928, form has always been the signature of Hermès watches.” In his account, a watch’s appearance is not decoration added after the technical decisions: its shape, display and details are part of the idea from the outset. As he puts it, “A watch is never born by chance.”
A watch shaped by the wider Hermès house
The creative language extends beyond watchmaking. The interview describes links to the house’s leatherwork, jewelry, silk and scarf designs. A scarf’s imagery or story, for example, can be reinterpreted at the scale of a dial. The result is not merely a miniature reproduction; it is a way of translating a broader Hermès theme into a form that belongs on a watch.

This approach also helps explain why craft and narrative sit beside mechanical complications in Delhotal’s description of the work. A technical feature matters, but its role is considered in relation to the object’s identity and the experience of reading or wearing it.
What is the defining spirit of the Hermès H08?
The H08 makes Delhotal’s design-first approach tangible. In a 2023 interview with Men’s Folio, he described it as urban with a sporty character, built around a shape that is neither round nor square. The materials were selected to support comfort, lightness and solidity while contributing to the watch’s style. These are design intentions described in that interview, rather than a comparative test of durability or performance.
Why the chronograph uses one pusher
The H08 Chronograph arrived after the original H08. Delhotal explained that a monopusher was chosen to preserve the original watch’s visual code: adding the usual separate chronograph pushers would have disturbed the balance of the design. Here, the complication is not treated as an independent feature; its controls are arranged to fit the case’s existing visual language. This rationale comes from Delhotal’s 2023 Men’s Folio interview.

That earlier conversation also noted Hermès was developing a shorter strap as more women wanted to wear the H08. It records a development at the time of the 2023 interview, not confirmation that a particular shorter strap is currently available or compatible with every reference.

How does Hermès connect watch design with craft and complications?
In the 2023 interview, Delhotal outlined four areas of his work: Métiers d’Art, complications, jewelry and the current collection. The range of examples he named shows how varied the storytelling can be: Arceau Le Temps Suspendu, Arceau L’Heure de la Lune and Arceau Le Temps Voyageur are distinct watches, each built around its own way of expressing time.
Craft can also be the central subject of a watch. A 2021 WatchTime India interview discussed the Slim d’Hermès C’est la fête, which combines paillonné enamel, miniature enamel and engraving. The example shows a different route from the H08: rather than integrating a chronograph into a sporty form, it brings several decorative techniques together to create a watch with an artistic focus. Delhotal also identified the H08 as a daily-wear design he liked in that interview; comments about activity or water use there are personal remarks, not universal guarantees for every H08 reference. How does Hermès make its watches?
The 2025 Monochrome Watches profile describes a Swiss production network across several locations and a specialist movement partner. The site and partner details below are reported by Monochrome; they should be understood as its account of Hermès’ operations, rather than a complete inventory of every component or production step.
- Le Noirmont, Swiss Jura: The profile says the site makes cases and dials. It reports that Joseph Erard was integrated in 2013 and Natéber acquired in 2012.
- Brügg, canton of Bern: Monochrome describes the site as a center for strap assembly and artistic leather dials.
- Biel: The profile says La Montre Hermès was established there in 1978. It places the company’s watchmaking history in the late 1920s and characterizes the division as approaching its 50th anniversary; those are the profile’s own chronology and framing.
- Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier: The profile identifies Vaucher as a mechanical movement specialist in which Hermès holds a 25% stake.
Planned expansion and reported business figures
Monochrome reported that the Le Noirmont site was planned to reach 11,000 square meters by 2028, with about 100 additional employees associated with the expansion by that date. These are announced future plans as described in the 2025 profile, not completed changes.

It also said revenue was slightly above EUR 600 million in 2023. These are figures reported or estimated by Monochrome, not audited watch-segment disclosures established by the interview. For the first half of 2025, Monochrome reported an 8% decline in watch revenue based on Hermès’ half-year results released on 30 July 2025; it also reported group revenue of EUR 8 billion, up 8% at constant exchange rates. The group figure covers Hermès overall, not just watches.

What the interview reveals—and what it does not
Delhotal’s account makes the H08 a useful illustration of Hermès’ creative priorities: its distinctive shape sets the character, while the monopusher chronograph adapts a complication to that shape. Across the wider collection, the same emphasis on form and narrative can lead to very different expressions, from a sporty urban watch to a dial built around decorative arts.
The interviews are conversations about creative intent, craft and design. They do not establish a performance ranking, durability comparison, current retail availability, pricing, or a universal specification for all H08 references. Those questions require reference-specific product information rather than conclusions drawn from Delhotal’s design commentary.
