Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Time Zone ref. 116.025 is the platinum, manually wound version of the first-generation Lange 1 Time Zone, introduced in 2005. Its defining appeal is the combination of two time displays, a city ring, and the brand’s oversized date in a 41.9 mm case. It is no longer in the current collection, and its movement is calibre L031.1—not the L141.1 used in the 2020-generation model.
What is the Lange 1 Time Zone 116.025?
Reference 116.025 is a specific platinum configuration of the Lange 1 Time Zone. A. Lange & Söhne lists its introduction as 2005 and identifies it as no longer part of the current collection. The watch pairs the Lange 1’s asymmetric dial and outsize date with a second time display and a city ring intended to help set and identify a chosen time zone. A. Lange & Söhne’s reference page lists the specifications for 116.025.

How does the Lange 1 Time Zone work?
The dial brings together a primary time display and a smaller secondary time display. The city ring provides the location reference for the second zone, while day/night indication helps distinguish the part of the day shown. The manufacturer describes the city-ring concept for the 2020-generation Lange 1 Time Zone as representing 24 time zones; that later-generation description should not be read as a separate reference-specific operating manual for 116.025. The later model’s page also describes ring-shaped day/night displays and a daylight-saving-time indication. A. Lange & Söhne’s 2020-generation press material explains those newer-model details.

In a 2014 review of ref. 116.025, Fratello describes a rectangular pusher at 8 o’clock as advancing local time and the city ring. That account offers a useful orientation to the setting interaction, but it is a reviewer’s description, not a hands-on test for this review. Fratello’s review of ref. 116.025 discusses the control.
What stands out in the design and display?
Two times without abandoning the Lange 1 layout
The central design challenge is fitting a second time zone into a dial already organized around off-centre displays, the oversized date, and the power-reserve indicator. The small-seconds display and secondary time display give the dial distinct jobs rather than treating the second zone as a separate complication hidden away. The city ring adds a place name to the time-zone reading, while day/night indication provides context for the displayed hours.
Platinum case dimensions
The 41.9 mm diameter and 11 mm height are substantial figures for a dress-oriented watch, especially one with an intentionally busy dial. The specification gives a clear sense of scale, but dimensions alone cannot establish how the watch wears on an individual wrist. Platinum, the sapphire caseback, and the multi-display dial make this a more visually and physically assertive Lange 1 than a minimalist time-only piece.
Movement on view
Through the sapphire caseback, the manually wound L031.1 is part of the watch’s presentation rather than an invisible mechanism. A. Lange & Söhne lists 417 parts, a frequency of 21,600 semi-oscillations per hour (3 Hz), and a 72-hour power reserve. The hand-wound format also makes winding a regular part of ownership; the reserve figure indicates the manufacturer’s stated running time when fully wound, not a promise about the condition of a particular pre-owned example.

How does 116.025 differ from the 2020-generation Lange 1 Time Zone?
The 2020 model is a later generation, not a specification update that can be applied retroactively to ref. 116.025. The manufacturer identifies L031.1 for 116.025 and L141.1 for the 2020 generation. Its 2020 press material lists a 10.9 mm height and describes an intuitive daylight-saving-time indication. The listed 116.025 height is 11 mm, and its listed functions include a time-zone function and day/night indication.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should buyers know about availability?
A. Lange & Söhne says ref. 116.025 is no longer in its current collection. A Sotheby’s catalogue entry documents an auction-market example, establishing that the reference has appeared through a secondary-market channel, but it does not establish present inventory, an asking price, or the condition of any watch now offered. Sotheby’s catalogue entry for a 116.025 is a historical listing, not a current offer.
For any pre-owned example, ask the seller to document the individual watch rather than relying on the reference’s general specifications. Useful checks include:
- Condition of the case, dial, hands, crystal, and movement, with clear photographs and an opportunity for an independent inspection where practical.
- Provenance and whether the serial and reference information match the accompanying paperwork.
- Included box, documents, and accessories, with any omissions stated explicitly.
- Service history, including dates and available invoices or service records.
- Whether the time-zone setting, date, power-reserve indication, and day/night display operate correctly.
The reference and auction catalogue do not establish a current market value. Evaluate a specific offer from its documentation, condition, service status, and seller terms rather than assuming a price from an old catalogue entry.
