The AirPods family has nine major release entries through early April 2026. The standard open-fit line runs from AirPods (1st generation) to AirPods 4, while AirPods Pro and AirPods Max are separate product branches with their own generation numbers. The list below uses retail availability dates—not announcement or preorder dates—so it reflects when each model first became available to customers.
AirPods generations in release order
| Order | Model | Retail release date | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | AirPods (1st generation) | December 13, 2016 | Announced September 7, 2016; availability was delayed from Apple’s original late-October estimate. |
| 2 | AirPods (2nd generation) | March 20, 2019 | Introduced the H1 chip, hands-free “Hey Siri,” faster device switching, and an optional wireless charging case. |
| 3 | AirPods Pro (1st generation) | October 30, 2019 | Created the separate AirPods Pro in-ear branch, with active noise cancellation and a different design from standard AirPods. |
| 4 | AirPods Max (1st generation) | December 15, 2020 | Introduced the over-ear AirPods Max family. |
| 5 | AirPods (3rd generation) | October 26, 2021 | Added a shorter-stem design, spatial audio with dynamic head tracking, Adaptive EQ, and sweat and water resistance. |
| 6 | AirPods Pro (2nd generation) | September 23, 2022 | Added the H2 chip, improved active noise cancellation, Adaptive Transparency, touch-based volume control, and a redesigned charging case. |
| 7 | AirPods 4 | September 20, 2024 | Launched in two versions: standard AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. |
| 8 | AirPods Pro (3rd generation) | September 19, 2025 | Added a redesigned fit, improved in-ear ANC, heart-rate sensing during workouts, five ear-tip sizes, IP57 resistance, and Live Translation support with compatible Apple devices and software. |
| 9 | AirPods Max 2 | Early April 2026 | Added the H2 chip, improved ANC, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, Live Translation, studio-quality recording, and camera-remote capabilities. |
Dates are based on Apple’s stated customer, shipping, or store availability. Apple announced some products days or weeks before they became available. The AirPods Max 2 date remains “early April 2026” because Apple’s announcement specified that availability window without giving a precise day.
1. AirPods (1st generation)—December 13, 2016
The original AirPods were announced on September 7, 2016, alongside the iPhone 7. Apple initially described them as arriving in late October, but the actual availability date recorded in Apple’s newsroom archive was December 13, 2016.
They established the basic AirPods concept: compact wireless earbuds, automatic pairing with Apple devices, a charging case, and an open-fit design without silicone ear tips. They are now a discontinued first-generation product, so a listing described as “new” should be checked carefully for seller, age, battery condition, and warranty.

2. AirPods (2nd generation)—March 20, 2019
The second-generation standard AirPods arrived on March 20, 2019. The major internal upgrade was Apple’s H1 headphone chip, which enabled hands-free “Hey Siri,” faster switching between devices, and improved wireless performance compared with the original model.

And you can track down your AirPods and Charging Case with the Find My app.*
- LONG BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 5 hours of listening time on a single charge. And get up to 30 hours of total listening time using the case.*
Apple sold the generation with more than one case configuration. Buyers could choose the standard Lightning charging case or an optional wireless charging case. That case distinction matters when shopping for replacements: a case designed for one version may not provide the charging method or fit expected by the owner.
3. AirPods Pro (1st generation)—October 30, 2019
AirPods Pro were not the second generation of standard AirPods. They were a new, separate in-ear branch announced on October 28, 2019, with shipping and store availability beginning October 30.
The Pro design introduced silicone ear tips and active noise cancellation to the AirPods family. Its in-ear fit and case dimensions also made its accessories distinct from those for standard AirPods. Owners looking for replacements should match the accessory to “AirPods Pro,” not simply to an AirPods generation number.
4. AirPods Max (1st generation)—December 15, 2020
AirPods Max expanded the family beyond earbuds. Apple announced the over-ear headphones on December 8, 2020, opened orders the same day, and began customer and store availability on December 15.
Because AirPods Max is an over-ear branch, it does not sit in a direct upgrade sequence between standard AirPods 2 and AirPods 3. It has its own model identity, hardware, fit, and accessory requirements.
5. AirPods (3rd generation)—October 26, 2021
The third-generation standard AirPods were announced on October 18, 2021, with orders opening immediately and store availability beginning October 26.
AirPods 3 adopted a shorter-stem shape and added spatial audio with dynamic head tracking, Adaptive EQ, and sweat and water resistance. They remained part of the standard open-fit line rather than becoming an AirPods Pro model. Their case and physical design are different from both earlier standard AirPods and AirPods Pro, so protective cases and charging cases should be model-specific.

6. AirPods Pro (2nd generation)—September 23, 2022
AirPods Pro 2 were announced on September 7, 2022. Apple opened online orders on September 9 and began shipping and store availability on September 23.
The generation introduced Apple’s H2 chip, improved active noise cancellation, Adaptive Transparency, and touch control for adjusting volume on the earbud stem. Apple also redesigned the charging case. These changes distinguish AirPods Pro 2 from AirPods Pro 1, but owners should still verify the exact case and ear-tip compatibility before buying replacements.
7. AirPods 4—September 20, 2024
AirPods 4 became available on September 20, 2024, in two standard-family variants:
- AirPods 4: the regular version without Active Noise Cancellation.
- AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation: the higher-feature version in the same numbered generation.
This is an important naming change. “AirPods 4” can refer to the generation generally, but the version with ANC is a distinct configuration. When comparing prices or features, confirm whether a listing is for standard AirPods 4 or AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation.

Apple also refreshed AirPods Max in 2024 with USB-C and new color options. That was a connectivity and color revision of the existing Max line, not a numbered new generation, so it does not appear as a separate entry in the chronology.
8. AirPods Pro (3rd generation)—September 19, 2025
AirPods Pro 3 were announced on September 9, 2025, and became available in stores on September 19.
Apple described a redesigned fit, improved in-ear active noise cancellation, heart-rate sensing during workouts, five ear-tip sizes, and IP57 resistance. Apple also listed Live Translation support when the earbuds are paired with compatible Apple devices and software. Because features such as Live Translation depend on device, operating-system, language, and regional support, buyers should verify current compatibility rather than assuming every Apple device supports every feature.
9. AirPods Max 2—early April 2026
Apple announced AirPods Max 2 on March 16, 2026. Orders were scheduled to begin March 25, with customer and store availability beginning in early April.

- REBUILT FOR COMFORT — AirPods 4 have been redesigned for exceptional all-day comfort and greater stability. With a refined contour, shorter stem, and quick-press controls for music or calls.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation help reduce outside noise before it reaches your ears, so you can immerse yourself in what you’re listening to.*
- HEAR THE WORLD AROUND YOU — The powerful H2 chip comes to AirPods 4. Adaptive Audio seamlessly blends ANC and Transparency mode — which lets you comfortably hear and interact with the world around you exactly as it sounds — to provide the best listening experience in any environment.* And when you’re speaking with someone nearby, Conversation Awareness automatically lowers the volume of what’s playing.*

Apple did not provide a specific day for that April availability window in the cited announcement. Therefore, “early April 2026” is the accurate release date wording unless a later Apple source supplies a precise date; March 25 is the order date, not the retail release date.
AirPods Max 2 adds the H2 chip, improved ANC, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, Live Translation, studio-quality recording, and camera-remote capabilities. These features make it a new generation of the over-ear Max branch, not a successor to AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 3.
Which AirPods models are current?
As of August 11, 2026, Apple’s headline AirPods lineup consists of:
- AirPods 4
- AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation
- AirPods Pro 3
- AirPods Max 2
Apple’s current comparison materials treat these as separate models. The older standard generations, AirPods Pro 1 and 2, and AirPods Max 1 may still appear through third-party, clearance, or refurbished sellers, but they should not automatically be presented as current Apple-store models.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor current shopping, compare Apple AirPods by branch rather than by number alone: AirPods 4 are the open-fit standard option, AirPods Pro 3 are the in-ear Pro option, and AirPods Max 2 are the over-ear option. Availability, prices, colors, software support, and included accessories can change by country and over time.
How the AirPods naming system works
Standard AirPods
The standard line is the straightforward numbered sequence:
AirPods 1 → AirPods 2 → AirPods 3 → AirPods 4
These models generally use an open-fit earbud design. AirPods 4 adds an important split between the regular version and the version with ANC, but both belong to the fourth-generation standard family.

AirPods Pro
The Pro line has its own sequence:
AirPods Pro 1 → AirPods Pro 2 → AirPods Pro 3
AirPods Pro 2 is therefore the second generation of AirPods Pro, not the second generation of all AirPods. Pro models use a different in-ear design and have different cases and ear tips from standard AirPods.
AirPods Max
The Max line is the over-ear branch:
AirPods Max 1 → AirPods Max 2
The USB-C and color refresh associated with the 2024 AirPods Max update did not create a new numbered generation. AirPods Max 2 is the first clearly numbered successor in the over-ear line.
Release date versus announcement date
Apple’s announcement date is not always the date a product reached customers. For this list, “release date” means the first stated retail, shipping, or store-availability date:
- Announcement: when Apple reveals the product.
- Preorder or order date: when customers can place an order.
- Retail release date: when shipping or store availability begins.
The original AirPods demonstrate why the distinction matters: they were announced on September 7, 2016, initially described as a late-October product, and ultimately recorded as available on December 13. AirPods Pro 2 were announced on September 7, 2022, ordered from September 9, and released on September 23. AirPods Max 2 likewise had a March 25 order date but only an “early April” availability window.

- Identify the exact branch and generation. Standard AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max are not interchangeable families.
- Check the charging case. Case shape, connector, wireless-charging capability, and compatibility vary by model.
- Expect battery aging. Older wireless earbuds may have substantially reduced battery capacity even if the exterior looks new.
- Verify software and feature support. Newer features may require a compatible iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, operating system, language, or region.
- Confirm seller and warranty status. A discontinued model sold by a marketplace seller is not the same as a current Apple-store product.
- Match accessories precisely. Use replacement AirPods Pro ear tips for the correct Pro generation, an AirPods charging case made for the exact model, and a protective case with matching dimensions.
For owners of older models, replacement accessories can be a more sensible search than trying to buy discontinued earbuds as if they were current. Useful categories include replacement AirPods Pro ear tips, an AirPods charging case, an AirPods protective case, and model-appropriate cleaning supplies. Compatibility should be checked before purchase.
Quick answer
In overall family release order, the AirPods models are: AirPods 1 (December 2016), AirPods 2 (March 2019), AirPods Pro 1 (October 2019), AirPods Max 1 (December 2020), AirPods 3 (October 2021), AirPods Pro 2 (September 2022), AirPods 4 (September 2024), AirPods Pro 3 (September 2025), and AirPods Max 2 (early April 2026).
If the question concerns only the standard AirPods line, the order is AirPods 1, AirPods 2, AirPods 3, and AirPods 4. Pro and Max models belong to separate branches.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the latest AirPods generation?
The latest entries in the overall family are AirPods Pro 3, released September 19, 2025, and AirPods Max 2, which became available in early April 2026. In the standard open-fit line, AirPods 4 is the latest generation.
Best Value
- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Are AirPods Pro 2 the second-generation AirPods?
No. AirPods Pro 2 is the second generation of the separate AirPods Pro branch. The standard line progressed from AirPods 1 to AirPods 2, AirPods 3, and AirPods 4.
When were the first AirPods released?
The first AirPods became available on December 13, 2016. They were announced on September 7, 2016, but the announcement date and retail availability date were different.
When did AirPods 4 come out?
AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation became available on September 20, 2024.
What is the release date of AirPods Max 2?
Apple announced AirPods Max 2 on March 16, 2026, opened orders on March 25, and specified customer and store availability beginning in early April 2026. Apple’s cited announcement did not give a precise April day.
Can AirPods generations use the same charging case?
Not universally. Case dimensions and charging features vary across standard AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max, and sometimes between versions within a generation. Match a replacement case to the exact model rather than relying on the word “AirPods” alone.
The Bottom Line
The cleanest way to understand AirPods history is as three parallel product lines: standard AirPods 1 through 4, AirPods Pro 1 through 3, and AirPods Max 1 through 2. Use retail availability dates for chronology, and check the exact branch before comparing features, cases, ear tips, or current prices.
