Garmin’s next era is already underway in 2026—but the evidence points to a broader platform shift, not a confirmed fēnix 9. Fitness revenue rose 42% year over year in the first quarter, Garmin introduced lower-priced Forerunner models and its first screen-free CIRQA band, and Connect+ is turning accumulated health and training data into a recurring software product. Management has also signaled a significant outdoor launch cycle, making a flagship refresh plausible without proving that a particular model or specification is coming.
The clues are hiding in plain sight: Garmin is expanding the kinds of devices people can wear, the activities they can record, and the services built around that data.
The financial clue: fitness is now Garmin’s growth engine
Garmin’s first-quarter 2026 results show why the company’s strategy is changing. Fitness revenue rose 42% year over year, compared with 14% growth for the company as a whole. Fitness accounted for 31% of first-quarter revenue, while outdoor represented 24%. Outdoor revenue was down 5% year over year in the same period.
Those figures do not mean Garmin is abandoning adventure watches. They do show where the strongest momentum currently sits. Fitness is bringing more revenue and, potentially, more new users into the ecosystem. Outdoor, meanwhile, has a clear commercial reason to receive a substantial product push after a softer quarter and ahead of the company’s stated 2026 launch plan.

The important point is that Garmin’s next era is not dependent on one product. A new fēnix would matter, but the more consequential change is the widening funnel around it: cheaper running watches, a screen-free band, software subscriptions, coaching services, accessories, and communication products that keep Garmin relevant throughout more of a user’s day.
CIRQA is the clearest sign that Garmin wants more than one kind of wearable
On July 21, 2026, Garmin introduced Garmin CIRQA Smart Band, its first screen-free smart band. In the United States, Garmin lists a suggested price of $199.99 and battery life of up to 10 days.
CIRQA is not simply a low-cost Garmin watch with fewer features. It has no display and is designed to collect health, wellness, sleep, and training data without constantly asking the wearer to interact with it. Garmin describes it as a complement to its smartwatch and wellness-monitor lineup, which is a strategically important distinction.
The band’s listed capabilities include:
- wrist-based heart rate, stress, Body Battery, and skin-temperature tracking;
- Pulse Ox, respiration, HRV, sleep stages, sleep score, and nap detection;
- menstrual-cycle and pregnancy tracking;
- training readiness, VO2 max, training status, and recovery time; and
- connected GPS through a compatible smartphone.
That last point matters. CIRQA does not have the same standalone GPS role as a Forerunner or fēnix. It relies on a compatible phone for connected GPS, so it is better understood as a screenless health and activity tracker than as a complete replacement for a GPS running or outdoor watch.
Garmin also says that CIRQA’s core functionality does not require a subscription. That separates the device from Garmin’s broader Connect+ strategy, where premium personalized insights and dashboards are offered through a paid service. The distinction is useful: Garmin is testing both a wider range of hardware formats and a wider range of software monetization, without making Connect+ a prerequisite for the band.
For users who dislike sleeping in a watch, want fewer notifications, or prefer a discreet device for continuous tracking, CIRQA creates a new role inside Garmin’s portfolio. It also raises the possibility that future customers may use two Garmin wearables: a screenless band for sleep and everyday health data, plus a full-featured watch for training, navigation, and outdoor activities.
The Forerunner 70 and 170 widen Garmin’s entry points
Garmin announced the Forerunner 70 and Forerunner 170 on May 12, 2026, with U.S. availability beginning May 15. The announced U.S. suggested retail prices were:
| Model | U.S. suggested price at launch | Position in the lineup |
|---|---|---|
| Forerunner 70 | $349.99 | Lower-priced running smartwatch |
| Forerunner 170 | $419.99 | More advanced GPS running smartwatch |
| Forerunner 170 Music | $489.99 | Forerunner 170 variant with music features |
Garmin’s Forerunner 170 product page highlights Garmin Pay, floor-climb tracking, and additional cycling metrics when the watch is paired with a compatible accessory. Those details matter less individually than the portfolio signal: Garmin is adding current-generation products at more price points instead of relying on one or two entry models to feed the rest of the ecosystem.
For a runner who needs a current device rather than an unannounced flagship, the Garmin Forerunner 170 is the more practical “buy now” reference point. Its launch price and availability can change by market and retailer, and buyers should verify whether they are looking at the standard or Music version. It also demonstrates Garmin’s upgrade path: a customer can start with a running watch, add compatible sensors later, and move into higher-end training, outdoor, safety, or subscription features without leaving Garmin Connect.
Software is becoming a recurring product layer
Garmin’s February 2026 software release expanded health, fitness, gear-tracking, and connected features on selected devices, including the Venu X1, vívoactive 6, fēnix 8 Pro, Forerunner 570, and Forerunner 970. The release also included updates to Garmin Connect.
This is a change in emphasis. A traditional watch launch sells a new combination of sensors, GPS hardware, battery, and case design. Software allows Garmin to keep adding value to devices already on people’s wrists. It can also make the ecosystem more difficult to replace: the longer a user records training, sleep, gear, and health trends, the more useful Garmin’s interpretation layer becomes.
Connect+ is central to that shift. Garmin has added premium features such as nutrition tracking and insights powered by Garmin Active Intelligence. The promise is not merely more data, but more interpretation of the data a user has already accumulated.

There are important limits to this claim. Connect+ features may depend on the device, region, software version, or subscription tier, and an AI-generated insight is not the same thing as medical advice or a clinical diagnosis. Still, the strategic direction is clear: Garmin increasingly wants to sell the analysis around the sensor data, not only the hardware that records it.
Garmin is extending the wrist into safety and communication
Garmin’s outdoor strategy also reaches beyond training metrics and maps. Its 2025 annual report describes outdoor products that combine LTE and satellite-network connectivity, depending on the model. Garmin’s inReach service supports two-way messaging, weather information, and SOS functions through an active service plan.
Selected Garmin smartwatches use built-in inReach technology for satellite and LTE connectivity, allowing users to stay in contact without carrying a phone during an activity. The fēnix 8 Pro and other recent products therefore provide an existing platform from which future outdoor devices could extend wrist-based communication.
That is a credible direction, but it is not confirmation of a particular future watch. It would be inaccurate to state that a future fēnix will definitely include satellite messaging, LTE, or a specific antenna design. Those capabilities vary by product and depend on network coverage, hardware, and an active service plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe broader implication is more significant than any one radio. Garmin can connect the same user’s training data, navigation, weather, emergency communication, and post-activity analysis. That gives an outdoor watch a role as a safety and data hub rather than simply a GPS instrument.
Training and health are converging inside the same ecosystem
CIRQA combines wellness monitoring with training metrics, while Connect+ adds nutrition and personalized insights. Garmin’s newsroom also reported the acquisition of TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic in July 2026, bringing structured endurance and strength-training businesses closer to the company’s device ecosystem.
The likely value of that strategy is not just another place to view a workout. Garmin can connect a planned session, the sensors that record it, the recovery data that follows it, and the coaching recommendations that influence what the user does next. The more complete that loop becomes, the less Garmin is competing only on screen quality, GPS accuracy, or battery life.
It also explains why accessories remain important. A watch can become more useful when paired with a heart-rate monitor, cycling power meter, running dynamics accessory, or other compatible device. For an existing owner, Garmin cycling sensors and other compatible accessories may expand what a current watch can record without requiring an immediate watch upgrade. Compatibility must be checked model by model; not every sensor works with every Garmin device.

Garmin’s 2025 Form 10-K describes five operating segments: fitness, outdoor, aviation, marine, and auto OEM. It also presents Garmin as a combination of products, applications, and services, including Garmin Connect, Connect+, Connect IQ, Outdoor Maps+, inReach, and Garmin Response.
Viewed together, the 2026 launches form a deliberate continuum:
- Entry-level running watches bring new athletes into Garmin’s platform.
- Premium watches serve serious runners, multisport athletes, and outdoor users.
- CIRQA adds a discreet, screen-free route into sleep and wellness tracking.
- Sensors and accessories deepen the activity data collected by existing devices.
- Garmin Connect and Connect+ turn measurements into trends, plans, nutrition records, and personalized insights.
- inReach and LTE extend the platform into communication and emergency response.
- Coaching businesses add structured endurance and strength training to the data loop.
In that model, the watch remains important, but it is no longer the entire product. It becomes the hub connecting several kinds of hardware, software, and services.

Why a major outdoor-watch refresh is plausible
The strongest official clue about a major outdoor launch is Garmin management’s FY2025 guidance. The company said outdoor growth was expected to accelerate in 2026, driven by a significant number of new product introductions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The first-quarter numbers add context. Outdoor revenue declined 5% year over year while fitness grew rapidly, so Garmin has both a stated product plan and a commercial reason to reinforce its outdoor business during the rest of the year. The official outdoor newsroom archive already shows a busy first half, including products such as the zūmo XT3, Garmin Catalyst 2, and new Approach products. It does not, however, confirm a fēnix 9.
A substantial second-half outdoor cycle is therefore a reasonable inference. Garmin’s flagship outdoor watches are strategically important, and management explicitly pointed to significant new introductions. But “a major outdoor refresh is likely” is not the same claim as “Garmin has confirmed the fēnix 9.”
What the fēnix 9 rumors do—and do not—tell us
Specialist and technology publications have discussed possible future Garmin products including a fēnix 9, Enduro 4, Edge 1060, and new display or connectivity configurations. A TechRadar report published on August 6, 2026 described alleged fēnix 9 details involving multiple sizes and possible AMOLED and solar/MIP variants.
Those reports are useful for mapping expectations, but they remain leak coverage. Garmin had not publicly confirmed a fēnix 9 in the official sources reviewed for this article. The same applies to claims about:
- a specific release date;
- microLED;
- exact LTE or satellite hardware;
- a new sensor generation;
- precise model sizes or display combinations; and
- pricing or regional segmentation.
Until Garmin publishes a product announcement or an authoritative regulatory record clearly identifies a product, those details should be treated as speculation. A rumor can suggest what Garmin may be testing; it cannot establish what Garmin will sell.

| If you are… | The sensible approach | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| A runner who needs a watch now | Consider the Forerunner 70 or Garmin Forerunner 170 | These are confirmed 2026 products; verify current price, stock, and the Music variant before buying. |
| Interested in sleep and wellness without a display | Consider Garmin CIRQA Smart Band | It uses connected GPS through a phone and does not require a subscription for its core functionality. |
| An outdoor athlete who needs a device now | Compare Garmin’s current smartwatch lineup | Do not assume an unannounced fēnix successor has a fixed date, price, or specification. |
| Waiting specifically for the next flagship outdoor watch | Wait for an official announcement if you can tolerate uncertainty | The 2026 outdoor launch guidance makes waiting rational, but it does not guarantee a fēnix 9. |
| An existing Garmin owner | Check software updates, Connect+ features, and compatible accessories | A new capability may come from software or a sensor rather than a new watch. |
The decision is also about form factor. CIRQA is not a cheaper fēnix, and a fēnix-class watch is not merely a larger CIRQA. They serve different moments: the band minimizes distraction and maximizes passive wear, while the watch provides on-device interaction, navigation, training controls, and—on selected models—more advanced communication.
For buyers comparing products before a purchase, Garmin’s current lineup is broad enough that the right choice depends more on the activity and required connectivity than on simply buying the newest-looking device. Check whether you need standalone GPS, maps, music, payments, cycling support, solar charging, LTE, satellite communication, or only continuous sleep and wellness data.
The clues to watch next
Garmin’s next major announcement should be judged against four practical questions:
- Is the product officially announced? A company newsroom post and product page carry more weight than a leak or retailer listing.
- Which features are hardware-dependent? GPS, LTE, satellite connectivity, sensors, and display types cannot be assumed to arrive through a software update.
- What requires a service plan? inReach communication and emergency features involve an active service plan, while CIRQA’s core functionality does not require Connect+.
- Which devices receive the software? Garmin’s 2026 updates already show that new features may be limited to selected watch families and software versions.
Those checks will separate a genuine change in Garmin’s platform from a speculative specification list. They will also reveal whether a new outdoor watch is an isolated hardware refresh or the centerpiece of a broader expansion across health, training, safety, and coaching.

Garmin’s next era is bigger than the next fēnix number
The evidence from 2026 supports a platform story. Fitness is growing faster than the company overall. Forerunner models are widening the entry points. CIRQA adds a screenless wearable category. Connect+ and Active Intelligence make software and interpretation recurring parts of the product strategy. inReach brings communication and safety closer to the wrist. TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic point toward a deeper coaching layer.
A flagship outdoor-watch refresh is plausible, and Garmin’s own guidance makes a significant second-half launch cycle worth watching. But the exact fēnix 9, its timing, and its rumored specifications remain unconfirmed in the reviewed official material.
That is why Garmin’s next era is already visible—even before a new fēnix is announced. The company is broadening from a premium GPS-watch maker into a connected portfolio of watches, bands, sensors, software, coaching, and safety services.

What does Garmin’s “next era” actually mean?
The strongest interpretation is a portfolio expansion. Garmin is combining watches, the CIRQA band, sensors, Garmin Connect and Connect+, inReach connectivity, and coaching services such as TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic into a wider health-and-performance ecosystem.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Garmin has not confirmed a fēnix 9, but 2026 already shows the company’s direction: more price points, more wearable formats, more AI-assisted software, and tighter links between health, training, coaching, and safety. A major outdoor launch is plausible; the larger and better-supported story is Garmin becoming a broader connected platform.
