Alibaba’s First Self-Developed AI Glasses: Quark S1, G1, Qwen and Swappable Batteries

Alibaba’s Quark AI Glasses S1 pair a transparent display and POV camera with Qwen AI and swappable batteries. The cheaper G1 drops the flagship display, while both launched first in China with major questions remaining for international buyers.

Alibaba’s first fully self-developed smart wearable is a China-launched family of AI glasses built around a first-person camera, voice assistance and the company’s Qwen model ecosystem. The flagship Quark AI Glasses S1 adds a transparent in-lens display and swappable batteries, while the cheaper G1 focuses on camera and audio functions. The glasses went on sale in China on November 27, 2025, with reported starting prices of about ¥3,799 for the S1 and ¥1,899 for the G1. Alibaba’s later corporate materials use the broader Qwen AI Glasses branding.

What Alibaba unveiled

Alibaba introduced the glasses as its first “fully self-developed smart wearable,” using the Quark consumer assistant powered by Qwen. The launch included two products:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Quark AI Glasses S1: the flagship model, with a transparent display, camera, speakers, microphones and replaceable temple batteries.
  • Quark AI Glasses G1: a lower-priced everyday model positioned around camera, audio and AI functions rather than the S1’s display-equipped design.

“Quark” refers to Alibaba’s consumer-facing AI and search assistant, while “Qwen” is the company’s family of foundation models. The names overlap in the product experience but are not identical. Alibaba’s later corporate pages refer to the broader product family as Qwen AI Glasses, so launch coverage may use either name depending on when it was published.

The retail launch was China-first. Reported distribution included Chinese e-commerce platforms such as Tmall, JD.com and Douyin, along with physical retail channels. A clearly documented official international rollout, U.S. pricing, English-first support or international warranty was not established in the available launch material.

Prices and the S1-versus-G1 choice

Model Positioning Display Reported starting price Best suited to
S1 Flagship AI/AR glasses Yes, transparent display About ¥3,799 Users who want visual information and more advanced hardware
G1 Everyday AI glasses Reportedly no S1-style display About ¥1,899 Users who mainly want a camera, speakers and voice assistant

Prices were reported at launch and may vary with configuration, promotions, memberships, subsidies and retailer terms. They are not equivalent to a confirmed U.S. retail price: tax, shipping, import duties, prescription lenses and support costs would all be additional considerations.

Quark AI Glasses S1 hardware

The S1 combines conventional eyewear with a camera, wireless connectivity, audio hardware and an optical display. The following detailed specifications were reported by secondary launch coverage and should not be treated as an independently tested specification sheet.

Component Reported detail
Display Dual Micro LED light engines with diffractive waveguide lenses
Display brightness Up to 2,300 nits at the eye, as reported
Display adjustment Adjustable display distance and height
Weight Approximately 51 grams
Processor Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 for AR processing
Audio Dual 10 mm speakers and a BES2800 audio chip
Microphones Five microphones, including a reported bone-conduction microphone
Wireless Bluetooth 5.4 and Wi-Fi 6
Camera Reported Sony IMX681 sensor with a 109-degree field of view
Prescription support Reported support from 0 to 800 degrees, with 1.60, 1.67 and 1.74 lens-index options

At approximately 51 grams, the S1 is considerably more complex than ordinary eyewear. That weight may be reasonable for a computer worn on the face, but comfort depends on balance, nose-pad design, prescription lenses and how long the display and camera are used. A transparent waveguide is also not the same thing as a full mixed-reality headset: it is better understood as a compact display for contextual information and selected overlays.

POV camera and visual AI

The S1’s reported camera uses a Sony IMX681 sensor, offers a 109-degree field of view and can capture still images at 4032 × 3024. Video recording was reported at up to 3K resolution and 30 frames per second, with electronic image stabilization, night-mode processing and quick capture.

The practical use case is first-person capture. A wearer can document what they are seeing, ask the assistant about an object, or use the camera as visual input for recognition and translation. However, “3K” does not automatically mean smartphone-level image quality. Field of view, stabilization, compression, low-light performance, audio capture and storage limits will matter at least as much as the headline resolution. No independent camera test was established in the supplied material.

Camera glasses also create a social and legal responsibility. Wearers should follow local recording laws and the rules of workplaces, schools, museums, stores and other controlled spaces. Do not assume that a recording light, privacy control or local-storage behavior is identical across models or firmware versions; confirm those details before buying.

Why the swappable batteries matter

The S1 reportedly places one 280 mAh battery in each temple arm. Instead of waiting for the glasses to recharge, the wearer can swap batteries and continue using the device. Reported charging accessories include a 700 mAh MiniBag dock, a 2,500 mAh charging case and a USB-C fast-charging clip said to reach roughly 50% charge in 10 minutes.

Alibaba’s launch coverage described battery life of up to 24 hours. That is a rated or claimed figure, not an independently measured guarantee. Actual runtime will depend heavily on whether the display, camera, Wi-Fi, translation and continuous voice interaction are active. Recording video or using live translation continuously should consume more power than occasional voice questions and audio playback.

The advantages

  • Less downtime during travel, events or long workdays.
  • Potentially less pressure on a single permanently sealed battery.
  • A spare charged cell can be carried instead of waiting near a charger.

The compromises

  • Removable cells and charging hardware can make the temples thicker and heavier.
  • The system may depend on proprietary batteries, docks or clips.
  • The long-term value depends on whether replacement batteries are sold and how easily users can replace them.

The available launch information did not responsibly establish replacement-battery pricing, tool-free replacement, battery-health controls or the number of swaps supported over the product’s life. Those are important questions, particularly because the battery advantage may require buying additional accessories.

What Qwen adds

Qwen supplies the AI-model layer; it is not the same component as the Snapdragon AR1 processor or the glasses’ camera and optical hardware. The reported and promoted software functions include:

Alibaba’s wider Qwen App strategy emphasizes agents that can perform tasks rather than merely respond to prompts, including examples such as ordering food and planning travel. Alibaba has also described Qwen glasses use cases involving proactive services, spatial 3D display, voice cloning and simultaneous interpretation. These descriptions should not be read as a promise that every function is available on every model, in every language or in every country.

The key distinction is between an AI chatbot and an ecosystem-connected assistant. The S1 may be most useful when the wearer has access to mainland-China accounts, Chinese-language recognition, Alibaba apps and the company’s cloud services. Shopping, payments, mapping and travel functions can be valuable inside that ecosystem but much less useful abroad.

How it compares with Meta and AR glasses

Product category Main proposition What Alibaba’s glasses add or give up
Alibaba S1 Camera, audio, Qwen assistant, transparent display and China-focused services More ambitious hardware and visual feedback, but greater complexity and regional dependence
Alibaba G1 Lower-priced camera-and-audio AI glasses Closer conceptually to camera/audio smart glasses, but detailed model specifications are limited
Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses Camera, calls, music, social capture and assistant features A more direct comparison for the G1; Alibaba’s S1 differentiates itself with an in-lens display and swappable batteries
Display-focused AR glasses such as XREAL or RayNeo products Virtual screens and AR-style visual experiences Closer to the S1’s display ambition, but generally different software ecosystems and use cases

This is a category comparison, not a performance ranking. There is no independent evidence here to claim that Alibaba’s camera, assistant, battery or display is better than Meta’s or another manufacturer’s.

The China-only buying problem

For buyers outside China, the main risk is not the hardware specification. It is whether the software experience survives outside Alibaba’s intended market.

  • Language: Chinese models may not offer full English voice recognition, responses or translation coverage.
  • Accounts: Setup may require Alibaba, Quark or related regional account access.
  • Apps and services: Taobao, Alipay, Amap, Fliggy and other integrations may be unavailable or degraded abroad.
  • Cloud dependence: Voice and visual AI may require network access to Alibaba services.
  • Firmware: Regional restrictions or Chinese-only firmware could limit features.
  • Warranty and repair: A China purchase may not include local warranty coverage, returns or convenient repairs.
  • Prescription lenses: A supported diopter range does not guarantee that your prism, progressive or other prescription can be made locally.
  • Total cost: Import tax, shipping, accessories and lens fitting can materially change the headline price.

Accordingly, importing an S1 or G1 only makes sense for a buyer prepared to accept uncertain language, account, firmware, app and warranty support. The confirmed launch evidence supports China availability, not a fully supported global alternative to Meta’s internationally sold products.

Who should consider the S1 or G1?

Consider the S1 if you are based in China, already use Alibaba’s services, want an in-lens display, value hands-free translation or visual recognition, and are comfortable carrying spare battery hardware.

Consider the G1 if you want the lower-cost entry point and mainly need camera, speakers and voice assistance. Do not assume that it includes the S1’s display or identical capabilities.

Look elsewhere if you need confirmed English-first operation, international warranty coverage, local repairs, ordinary sunglass weight, guaranteed non-China payment and mapping support, or a privacy-sensitive device with no camera.

What to check before buying

  1. Confirm the exact model, firmware region and supported languages.
  2. Verify which Qwen, Quark, shopping, mapping, travel and payment functions work with your account and location.
  3. Ask the seller whether spare batteries are sold separately and how they are replaced.
  4. Check whether the quoted battery life applies with the display, camera and translation enabled.
  5. Confirm prescription compatibility, lens pricing and local replacement options.
  6. Check recording indicators, mute controls, storage behavior and account permissions.
  7. Verify water resistance, repair arrangements and international warranty terms.
  8. Add shipping, taxes, import duties, charging accessories and prescription lenses to the price.

Verdict

Alibaba’s Quark S1 is strategically more interesting than a routine camera-glasses launch. It combines a transparent display, POV camera, Qwen-powered assistant and swappable batteries, while the G1 shows that Alibaba also wants a simpler and cheaper everyday model. The strongest differentiator is the connection to Alibaba’s China-focused commerce, mapping, travel and payment ecosystem—not merely the presence of an AI model.

For China-based users already invested in that ecosystem, the S1 could be a compelling early AI-glasses platform, especially if battery swapping works as intended. For international buyers, however, the unresolved questions around language, accounts, regional apps, firmware, warranty and cloud access outweigh the headline specifications. Until official regional support is clearly established, it is best viewed as an ambitious China-market product rather than a universally practical Meta alternative.
