Alternatives to ETA 2824-2 and Sellita SW200-1: Seagull, TMI/Seiko NH35 and Miyota Compared

NH35, Miyota 8215, 9015, 9039, 9075, and Sea-Gull ST19 compared with ETA 2824-2 and Sellita SW200-1, including dimensions, functions, use cases, and fit warnings.

The best all-round alternative is the TMI/Seiko NH35 for affordable, parts-oriented three-hand/date builds; the Miyota 9015 is the better choice for a thinner 4 Hz automatic, and the 9039 is its no-date counterpart. Miyota’s 8215 suits a thicker conventional watch, the 9075 is a true-GMT option, and Sea-Gull’s ST19 belongs in the separate hand-wound chronograph category. None is a universal drop-in replacement for the 4.60 mm ETA 2824-2 or Sellita SW200-1: case, dial, hands, stem, date position, and movement-holder geometry must be checked for the exact project.

What counts as an alternative?

ETA 2824-2 and Sellita SW200-1 are not simply generic automatic movements. They establish a particular package: roughly 111⁄2 ligne, 25.60 mm in diameter, 4.60 mm high, three hands with a date, automatic winding, hacking seconds, and a 4 Hz beat rate. The alternatives below should therefore be judged by the job they need to do—not by whether a seller says they are an ETA replacement.

Movement height, hand height, stem position, dial feet, date-window location, spacer design, and casing diameter can all prevent an apparently similar caliber from fitting. The official ETA 2824-2 specification and the manufacturer drawings for TMI and Miyota are the appropriate starting points.

Comparison at a glance

Movement Type and functions Published size and beat rate Best use Main qualification
ETA 2824-2 Automatic, hand-wind capable, hacking, three hands/date 25.60 mm diameter; 4.60 mm high; 28,800 vph; 25 jewels; approximately 42 hours Swiss-style dimensional baseline Reference caliber, not an alternative
Sellita SW200-1 Automatic three-hand/date architecture 25.60 mm diameter; 4.60 mm high; 28,800 vph; 26 jewels; approximately 38 hours in the cited catalogue Swiss-style baseline A later catalogue lists approximately 41 hours for the SW200-1a, so reserve depends on revision and source
TMI/Seiko NH35 Automatic, hand winding, hacking, three hands/date 27.40 mm movement diameter; 29.36 mm casing diameter including spacer; 5.32 mm high; 21,600 vph; 24 jewels Affordable builds, modding, and replacement projects Not dimensionally interchangeable with ETA/Sellita; variants differ in hand height and markings
Miyota 8215 Automatic, hand winding, hacking, quick date 111⁄2 ligne; 5.67 mm high; 21,600 vph; 21 jewels; approximately 42 hours Conventional, thicker automatic watches Its height is substantially greater than the Swiss baseline
Miyota 9015 Automatic, hand winding, hacking, quick date, three hands/date 111⁄2 ligne; 3.90 mm high; 28,800 vph; accuracy listed as −10 to +30 seconds/day Thin automatic watches with a date Dial, hands, stem, and holder must be designed for Miyota geometry
Miyota 9039 Automatic, hand winding, hacking, three hands/no date 3.90 mm high; 28,800 vph Thin no-date watches Cannot supply a date display without changing the design and caliber
Miyota 9075 Automatic true GMT with central GMT hand and independently adjustable hour hand 111⁄2 ligne; 4.92 mm high; 28,800 vph Travel watches and true-GMT projects A different dial, hand set, date, and case architecture are required
Sea-Gull ST19 Manual-wind, column-wheel chronograph Exact dimensions depend on the variant; not a three-hand/date automatic Chronograph and historically styled aviation projects A functional chronograph alternative, not an ETA 2824-2 or SW200-1 substitute

Specifications in the table come from the manufacturers’ cited material. “111⁄2 ligne” describes the movement’s nominal size class, but it does not guarantee that a movement will share the same casing, dial, hand, or stem interfaces as another 111⁄2-ligne caliber.

The best alternative depends on the project

1. TMI/Seiko NH35: the practical value and parts-ecosystem choice

For an inexpensive three-hand/date watch, the TMI NH35 is the most practical choice among these alternatives. It provides automatic and manual winding, hacking seconds, 24 jewels, a 21,600 vibrations-per-hour beat rate, and a date display. TMI lists it as 12 ligne and 5.32 mm high. That makes it larger in diameter and thicker than the ETA/Sellita baseline, despite filling a similar general market role.

The NH35’s real advantage is not dimensional similarity. It is the breadth of the surrounding parts market: dedicated cases, dials, hands, holders, replacement components, and build kits are widely offered. Specialist build documentation treats the movement, case, dial, hands, strap or bracelet, and assembly tools as separate parts, which is a useful reminder that buying the caliber alone does not create a compatible watch. Current parts listings support the ecosystem claim, but they do not establish that every marketplace component fits every NH35 variant.

If you are choosing an NH35 automatic watch movement, confirm the exact product code, hand-height version, origin marking, and included or required spacer before ordering. TMI’s NH35 product-line information shows that the NH35 name covers variants, while its product-code material provides the information needed to match hands, stems, and casing dimensions. The manufacturer also lists Japan or Malaysia as possible countries of origin; that marking alone should not be treated as a complete authenticity or quality assessment.

Choose the NH35 when: price, availability, replaceability, and a large modding ecosystem matter more than a slim case or a 4 Hz seconds sweep. Do not choose it because a listing describes it as a universal ETA replacement.

2. Miyota 9015: the strongest thin three-hand/date option

The Miyota 9015 is the more direct alternative when the brief calls for a thin automatic with a date. It is 3.90 mm high—0.70 mm thinner than the 4.60 mm ETA/Sellita baseline—and beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour. Miyota lists automatic and hand winding, hacking seconds, quick date setting, three hands/date, and an accuracy range of −10 to +30 seconds per day.

That combination makes the 9015 attractive for a slimmer case and a smoother-looking seconds motion than the 21,600-vph NH35 or 8215. The trade-off is that thinness does not make it a drop-in Swiss replacement. The dial feet, hand-fitting dimensions, stem height, movement holder, and date-window position still need to be designed around the 9015. Consult the specific Miyota product listing and technical documentation rather than relying on nominal ligne measurements.

Choose the 9015 when: case height and a 4 Hz beat rate are important, and you are prepared to use a case and dial intended for Miyota 9015 geometry. Its published accuracy specification is not a guarantee for every assembled watch; regulation, lubrication, positional error, magnetism, and service condition still affect performance.

3. Miyota 9039: the thin no-date counterpart

The 9039 retains the 9015’s 3.90 mm height and 28,800-vph frequency while omitting the date display. It is the better choice for a clean no-date dial, because the movement is designed for that function rather than being a date caliber hidden behind a blank dial.

As with the 9015, the important question is not simply whether the movement is 111⁄2 ligne. The case, dial feet, hand set, stem, and holder need to be specified for the 9039. A no-date movement can simplify dial design, but it does not make the rest of the installation interchangeable with ETA, Sellita, NH35, or 8215 parts.

4. Miyota 8215: the mature, conventional thicker automatic

The Miyota 8215 is a credible choice when a thicker movement is acceptable. Miyota lists automatic and hand winding, hacking seconds, quick date setting, three hands/date, 21 jewels, a 21,600-vph frequency, approximately 42 hours of power reserve, and a nominal accuracy range of −20 to +40 seconds per day. Its long manufacturing history and broad catalog presence make it a sensible conventional automatic for standard watches.

Its decisive limitation is height: 5.67 mm versus 4.60 mm for the ETA 2824-2 and Sellita SW200-1. That 1.07 mm difference can affect the entire watch, including case thickness, crystal clearance, caseback clearance, crown and stem alignment, and hand clearance. A case designed around a Swiss 4.60 mm movement should not be assumed to accept an 8215 merely because both occupy the 111⁄2-ligne class.

Choose the 8215 when: you want a conventional automatic with a date and do not need a particularly thin case. Its lower beat rate and published accuracy range place it in a different specification and price position from the 9015, not necessarily in a simple better-or-worse hierarchy.

5. Miyota 9075: a real GMT alternative, not a date replacement

The Miyota 9075 belongs in this comparison because it solves a different problem particularly well. It is a 4.92 mm-high, 111⁄2-ligne, 28,800-vph automatic with a central GMT hand and an independently adjustable local hour hand. That independently adjustable hour hand is the feature that makes it relevant to true-GMT travel watches.

A 9075 project needs a GMT hand, a suitable dial with the correct indications, a compatible date arrangement, an appropriate movement holder, and a case with the correct stem and crown architecture. It should therefore be selected at the design stage, not substituted into a completed three-hand/date watch as though it were an alternate 9015 or ETA 2824-2.

Choose the 9075 when: the watch genuinely needs a traveler-style GMT function. If the watch only needs three hands and a date, the additional architecture is unnecessary.

6. Sea-Gull ST19: the specialist chronograph alternative

The Sea-Gull ST19 is best understood as a chronograph family rather than a general-purpose automatic caliber. Sea-Gull’s official material identifies it as an in-house manual-wind, column-wheel chronograph movement descended from the ST3 D304 aviation chronograph. That gives it clear relevance to historically styled, aviation-inspired, and hand-wound chronograph projects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It cannot replace an ETA 2824-2 or Sellita SW200-1 in a three-hand/date watch. The winding system, chronograph architecture, dial openings, hand set, case, pushers, and movement holder are all different categories of interface. Even within the ST19 family, verify the exact variant before buying a case, dial, or hands.

Authenticity deserves more attention here than it often receives. Sea-Gull warns that its official websites are limited to stated official domains, and its Sea-Gull 1963 authenticity guide emphasizes movement markings and the ST19’s characteristic architecture. Treat seller provenance, photographs of the actual movement, return terms, and the exact case and dial package as part of the technical purchase—not as separate cosmetic concerns. The company’s official-site warning is also available through its official Sea-Gull site.

Choose the ST19 when: the project is specifically a manual-wind chronograph. Choose an NH35, 8215, 9015, or 9039 for a three-hand watch, depending on the required thickness, date function, and parts ecosystem.

Why these movements are not universal ETA or Sellita replacements

The ETA 2824-2 and SW200-1 share a useful baseline: 25.60 mm diameter, 4.60 mm height, automatic winding, hacking, three hands/date, and a 4 Hz operating frequency. ETA publishes 25 jewels and approximately 42 hours of reserve for the 2824-2. The cited Sellita catalogue lists 26 jewels and approximately 38 hours for the SW200-1, while a later catalogue version lists approximately 41 hours for the SW200-1a. Power-reserve figures should therefore be reported with the revision and catalogue date rather than treated as one permanent SW200-1 specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Against that baseline:

  • The NH35 is taller and has a larger movement and casing arrangement. TMI gives 27.40 mm for the movement and 29.36 mm for the casing diameter when the dial-holding spacer is included.
  • The 8215 is 5.67 mm high, so a Swiss-oriented case may not provide adequate clearance.
  • The 9015 and 9039 are thinner, but their dial, hand, stem, and holder interfaces are not automatically Swiss-compatible.
  • The 9075 adds a true GMT mechanism and consequently requires a different display and case design.
  • The ST19 is manual-wind and chronograph-based rather than an automatic three-hand/date movement.

These are design substitutions, not universal drop-in swaps. A seller’s phrase such as “ETA compatible” may refer only to a particular case or holder, and may not cover the dial feet, hand heights, crown position, or date window.

Compatibility checklist before ordering

  1. Write down the required functions. Decide whether the watch needs a date, no date, a GMT hand, or a chronograph before choosing the caliber. A 9039, for example, is not a 9015 with an interchangeable date module, and an ST19 is not a three-hand automatic.
  2. Compare movement diameter and height. Use the manufacturer’s drawing, not a rounded marketplace measurement. Remember that the NH35’s published 29.36 mm casing diameter includes the movement spacer, which is not the same measurement as the bare movement diameter.
  3. Check hand-fitting dimensions and hand height. The hour, minute, seconds, date, and GMT hands must match the exact caliber and variant. TMI publishes multiple NH35 hand-height options, and Miyota provides product-specific parts documentation through its technical material.
  4. Check dial feet and date-window position. A dial that physically covers the movement may still place its feet or date aperture in the wrong location. The date position must be evaluated relative to the case and dial, not just the caliber name.
  5. Check stem height, crown location, and holder geometry. The crown must line up with the case tube, and the movement holder or spacer must secure the caliber without forcing it against the dial or caseback.
  6. Confirm the complete parts package. A complete build may require the movement, case, dial, hands, stem and crown, movement holder or spacer, strap or bracelet, gaskets, caseback tool, hand-setting tools, and dust-control supplies. Specialist watch-build documentation lists these as separate components rather than assuming one universal kit.

For an NH35 project, an NH35-compatible watch case can be useful, but compatibility must be stated for the exact case, dial, hand-height version, stem, and spacer combination. A case advertised for an NH35 is not automatically suitable for a 9015, 8215, ETA 2824-2, or SW200-1.

A sensible installation and buying workflow

1. Start with the case and display brief

Decide the target case thickness, crystal clearance, caseback style, crown position, date or no-date layout, and whether the watch needs a GMT or chronograph. If the case is already fixed, measure its available movement cavity and compare it with the selected caliber’s official height and holder requirements.

2. Select the movement by function and thickness

Use the NH35 for a value-oriented date build, the 8215 for a conventional thicker automatic, the 9015 for a thin date watch, the 9039 for a thin no-date watch, the 9075 for a true GMT, and the ST19 for a manual-wind chronograph. This functional decision eliminates more compatibility problems than trying to retrofit a movement after buying the case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Order matched components

Buy the dial and hand set for the exact movement family. Check whether the case includes a holder or spacer, whether the stem is supplied, and whether the crown and tube match the case. If a product page uses only a broad phrase such as “NH movement” or “Miyota compatible,” ask for the exact caliber and measurements.

4. Verify provenance and variant

Marketplace listings can mix genuine, aftermarket, replacement, and incorrectly described components. For NH-series movements, check the product code and markings against TMI’s official code information. For an ST19, use Sea-Gull’s authenticity guidance and buy from a source that identifies the exact variant and accepts returns if the supplied movement does not match the listing.

5. Dry-fit before setting hands

Place the movement, holder, dial, and hands together before final casing. Confirm that the stem aligns with the crown tube, the date appears centered in the dial aperture, the seconds hand clears the dial and crystal, and the caseback leaves adequate clearance. Do not force a spacer or bend a hand to compensate for a dimensional mismatch.

6. Treat regulation and water resistance as separate jobs

A manufacturer’s accuracy range is a movement specification, not a promise that a completed watch will meet that figure in every position. After installation, regulation, winding-system checks, gasket inspection, and—where appropriate—water-resistance testing are separate work. A movement that fits physically can still require professional service before it is ready for daily wear.

At the bench, watch hand-setting tools are a legitimate part of the budget because installing hands without suitable support risks damaged pivots, scratched dials, bent hands, or poor alignment. The same applies to a movement holder and dust-control equipment; a movement replacement is not merely a matter of removing one caliber and dropping another into the case.

Which movement should you choose?

Your priority Recommended movement Why
Lowest-cost, parts-oriented three-hand/date build TMI/Seiko NH35 Broad ecosystem and easy access to dedicated cases, dials, hands, and replacement parts
Thin automatic with a date Miyota 9015 3.90 mm height and 28,800-vph frequency
Thin automatic without a date Miyota 9039 3.90 mm height, 4 Hz beat rate, and no-date architecture
Conventional thicker automatic with a date Miyota 8215 Mature, widely catalogued design with approximately 42 hours of listed reserve
True traveler’s GMT Miyota 9075 Central GMT hand and independently adjustable hour hand
Historically styled hand-wound chronograph Sea-Gull ST19 Column-wheel chronograph architecture and aviation-watch lineage

Final ranking

  1. Best broad ecosystem and value: TMI/Seiko NH35.
  2. Best thin premium three-hand/date choice: Miyota 9015.
  3. Best thin no-date choice: Miyota 9039.
  4. Best conventional thicker automatic: Miyota 8215.
  5. Best true-GMT alternative: Miyota 9075.
  6. Best chronograph-specific alternative: Sea-Gull ST19.

The ETA 2824-2 and Sellita SW200-1 remain the dimensional reference for the familiar Swiss-style automatic, but the best alternative is determined by the watch being built. NH35 wins on ecosystem and value; 9015 and 9039 win when thinness matters; 8215 suits a thicker conventional watch; 9075 adds genuine GMT functionality; and ST19 belongs in a separate chronograph category.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an NH35 replace an ETA 2824-2 or Sellita SW200-1?

Usually not. The NH35 is 5.32 mm high, with a published 27.40 mm movement diameter and 29.36 mm casing diameter including its spacer. ETA 2824-2 and Sellita SW200-1 are 4.60 mm high and 25.60 mm in diameter. The case, dial feet, hand heights, stem, date position, and holder must all be checked.

Is the Miyota 9015 better than the NH35?

The Miyota 9015 is the better choice when thinness and a 28,800-vph beat rate matter. It is 3.90 mm high and includes a date. The NH35 is generally more practical for inexpensive builds because its parts ecosystem is broader, but it is thicker and larger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can the Sea-Gull ST19 replace a standard automatic movement?

No. The ST19 is a manual-wind, column-wheel chronograph movement. It is appropriate for a chronograph project, not for a three-hand/date watch designed around an ETA 2824-2 or Sellita SW200-1.

Is the Miyota 9075 a direct replacement for a three-hand movement?

No. The 9075 is a true-GMT movement with a central GMT hand and independently adjustable hour hand. It requires a compatible GMT dial, hands, date arrangement, case, crown, and movement holder.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose the TMI/Seiko NH35 for the easiest affordable parts ecosystem, Miyota 9015 or 9039 for thin date or no-date watches, Miyota 8215 for a thicker conventional automatic, Miyota 9075 for a true GMT, and Sea-Gull ST19 for a hand-wound chronograph. None should be called a universal ETA 2824-2 or Sellita SW200-1 drop-in replacement without checking the complete case, dial, hand, stem, and holder specification.
