Amazon Halo is discontinued and no longer a viable fitness tracker. Amazon ended support on July 31, 2023, and said Halo devices and the app would stop functioning beginning August 1, 2023. This review examines what the original product did, why it was unusual, and what buyers should know before considering used hardware.
Amazon Halo is no longer a working fitness tracker. Amazon ended Halo support on July 31, 2023, and said the devices and companion app would stop functioning beginning August 1, 2023. Amazon also said remaining Halo health data would be deleted after the shutdown. That makes the current buying decision straightforward: do not purchase a used unit expecting a functional wearable or restored cloud service.
Historically, however, Halo was an unusually ambitious product. The original screen-free band combined activity and sleep tracking with smartphone-camera body-fat estimation, microphone-based voice-tone analysis, and a subscription library of workouts and wellness experiments. Those features made it more distinctive than an ordinary step counter—but also raised substantial privacy, accuracy, and body-image concerns.
Verdict: Amazon Halo was an inventive but polarizing fitness tracker. Its activity and sleep tools were competent, while Body and Tone made it stand out—and made its limitations impossible to ignore. Today, treat the Amazon Halo fitness tracker as a discontinued historical product, not a current fitness-tracker recommendation.
Amazon Halo: what it was
The original Amazon Halo was a small, screen-free wristband paired with a smartphone app. Rather than functioning like a smartwatch, it acted primarily as a passive wellness sensor. The band collected data; the phone app supplied nearly all the interpretation, feedback, setup, and interaction.

Amazon organized the experience into five main areas:
- Activity: movement, heart rate, steps, calories, and intensity-based activity points.
- Sleep: estimated sleep duration, awakenings, sleep phases, sleep score, and temperature changes.
- Body: a smartphone-camera body-fat estimate and three-dimensional body visualization.
- Tone: microphone-based analysis intended to describe energy and positivity in a user’s speech.
- Labs: challenges, experiments, workouts, meditations, and other behavior-change content.
That combination was unusual for its time. Halo was not simply trying to tell users how many steps they had taken. It attempted to connect movement, sleep, body composition, communication, and daily habits in one subscription-based wellness platform.
Design and hardware
The original Halo had no display. Its sensors were built into a small, curved capsule worn beneath a fabric band. The hardware included two microphones, an LED indicator, a physical button, and water resistance.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The screen-free design had genuine advantages. The band was lightweight, discreet, and easy to forget while wearing. There were no notifications, watch faces, or glowing statistics demanding attention throughout the day. For someone who wanted passive tracking rather than another smartwatch, that restraint was appealing.
The trade-off was dependence on a smartphone. You could not meaningfully review your activity, sleep, or other measurements on the band itself. Feedback lived in the app, and most interaction required a compatible phone. Halo therefore competed less with full-featured smartwatches and more with unobtrusive fitness bands and wellness sensors.
Activity tracking and exercise features
Halo tracked basic metrics including heart rate, steps, calories burned, and activity intensity. Its main scoring system did not focus exclusively on reaching a step target. Instead, Amazon assigned activity points according to the intensity and duration of movement.
Amazon described 150 activity points per week as a baseline. The system could also deduct points for spending prolonged periods sedentary. In principle, this was a useful approach: a short, brisk workout could count more than a long stretch of very easy movement, and the system acknowledged that extended inactivity matters even when a person reaches a daily step count.
In hands-on testing, long walks were often recognized automatically. Many other activities, however, had to be entered manually after the workout. That limitation matters if you want detailed exercise records without interacting with your phone.
Halo was therefore better suited to general movement accountability than serious training. It could encourage you to move more and spend less time sitting, but it was not designed around live workout controls, sport-specific metrics, detailed GPS analysis, or the training tools found on dedicated running and multisport watches.

Sleep tracking
Amazon said Halo used motion, heart rate, and temperature data to estimate when you were asleep and awake. The app presented sleep duration, nighttime awakenings, sleep phases—including light, deep, and REM estimates—along with an overall sleep score.
It also attempted to identify changes from a user’s baseline skin temperature. That could potentially help users notice deviations from their normal pattern, but it should not be confused with a medical temperature measurement or a diagnostic system.

A contemporary reviewer found that Halo identified sleep onset and nighttime awakenings usefully in testing. That is an observation about practical performance in a review, not clinical validation. Sleep-stage estimates from consumer wearables should be treated as approximations, especially when compared with medical-grade testing.
Body scanning: technically novel, psychologically complicated
The Body feature was Halo’s most obvious differentiator. A user took photographs with a smartphone, and the app used machine learning to estimate body-fat percentage and create a three-dimensional representation of the body. Amazon presented the feature as a way to establish a baseline and track change over time.
The technical idea was ambitious, but the result was not a medical measurement. Body-fat percentage was an estimate produced from photographs, and the practical quality of the scan depended on factors such as lighting, camera angle, and clothing. It should never be used as a diagnosis or treated as equivalent to a clinical assessment.
The feature also had a significant emotional downside. The body visualization and adjustable body-fat slider could encourage users to focus intensely on appearance and numerical changes. A contemporary reviewer found the experience psychologically uncomfortable and warned that it could be harmful for people vulnerable to body-image concerns.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat criticism is central to evaluating Halo. The Body feature was not merely an interesting technical extra; it changed the emotional character of the product. For some users, it might have provided a convenient way to observe a broad trend. For others, it could promote anxiety, compulsive checking, or an unhealthy fixation on body composition. Amazon’s claims about the feature’s accuracy should be understood alongside those practical and psychological limitations.
Tone analysis and privacy concerns
Tone used the band’s microphones and machine learning to analyze speech. The goal was to help users understand how they might sound to other people, using characteristics such as perceived energy and positivity. Users created a voice profile, and Amazon said speech samples were analyzed locally on the phone and automatically deleted after processing.
Even with those stated safeguards, the feature was inherently controversial. A wristband with microphones attempting to interpret emotional or interpersonal qualities from speech raises a different category of privacy concern from ordinary step or heart-rate tracking.

In testing, a reviewer found Tone intrusive and sometimes uncomfortably accurate or negative in its descriptions. That is subjective reviewer feedback—not evidence that Tone was clinically reliable, psychologically valid, or capable of objectively measuring emotion.
It is also important not to overstate unrelated privacy reporting. A 2023 FTC and DOJ action involving Amazon concerned Alexa children’s voice recordings and geolocation data, not Amazon Halo. It may provide broader context about scrutiny of Amazon’s data practices, but it was not an enforcement finding that Halo violated the same practices.
Halo Labs and the subscription
Halo Labs was a major part of the original product proposition. Amazon described Labs as a collection of science-backed challenges, experiments, workouts, meditations, and habit-building content intended to help users discover which behaviors worked for them.
Named historical content providers included Aaptiv, Headspace, the American Heart Association, Harvard Health Publishing, Mayo Clinic, Orangetheory, P.volve, SWEAT, and WW. The mix helped Halo feel more like a wellness platform than a conventional activity band.
The subscription also created a weakness. The product’s value was tied to an ongoing service rather than only to the hardware. At launch, the band cost $99.99 and included six months of Halo membership. The reported membership price after the trial was $3.99 per month. Those were launch-era prices, not current offers.
Once Amazon discontinued the app and service, the subscription proposition disappeared with it. Historical Labs content and membership benefits should not be mistaken for a service that can currently be activated.
Battery life and charging
Amazon’s original battery target was up to seven days. Battery life was substantially shorter when the Tone microphones were active.
A hands-on reviewer reported approximately five to six days with the microphones turned off, while enabling Tone could reduce battery life considerably—sometimes requiring charging nearly every day. Those are historical reviewer observations rather than a universal guarantee; battery performance varies with settings and use.
The original Halo used a proprietary charger. That is worth noting for collectors and former owners because losing the charger makes an already discontinued device more difficult to document or power. It does not, however, restore access to the defunct app or cloud service.

Amazon Halo Band versus Halo View
Amazon sold more than one product under the Halo name. The original Halo Band was screen-free. Halo View was a related model with a color touchscreen and on-device display.
| Feature | Original Halo Band | Halo View |
|---|---|---|
| Display | No display | Color touchscreen |
| Interaction | Primarily through the phone app | Some information available on the band |
| Historical battery claim | Up to seven days, with shorter life when Tone was active | Up to seven days |
| Water resistance | Water resistant | Listed as 50-meter swim-proof |
| Charging | Proprietary charger | Included charging clip |
| Band design | Fabric band around the sensor capsule | Replaceable-band design |
Halo View was identified by Best Buy as model B08NCGJSN9 and supported Apple iOS and Android. Its listing stated that the item was no longer available new. More importantly, Amazon’s discontinuation notice included Halo View among the affected products. A screen does not change the service-status verdict: Halo View is also a historical product, not a current alternative.

Amazon announced that it would discontinue Halo support on July 31, 2023. The company said Halo devices and the app would stop functioning beginning August 1, 2023, and that remaining Halo health data would be deleted after that date.
This means the problem is not simply that the app is old or that a particular feature might be unavailable. The central service that interpreted and presented the device’s data was discontinued. A used band may still power on, and an old listing may still appear in a marketplace search, but neither fact establishes that it can pair, synchronize, display historical data, or provide Halo features today.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Should you buy a used Amazon Halo?
No—not as a functioning fitness tracker. A used Amazon Halo might interest a collector, product historian, or technology enthusiast documenting Amazon’s discontinued wearable experiment. It could also be relevant to someone collecting the original hardware, packaging, or accessories.
For ordinary fitness tracking, the risks outweigh the appeal:
- The app and service no longer function.
- Halo health data was scheduled for deletion after the shutdown.
- A working-looking device cannot be assumed to pair or sync.
- The original proprietary charger may be missing.
- Replacement bands and charging accessories cannot restore the discontinued service.
- Any marketplace listing claiming current Halo functionality should be treated cautiously and independently verified.
If you encounter an Amazon Halo Band listing while researching the product, read it as a historical-hardware listing unless the seller can provide unusually strong, verifiable evidence to the contrary. Check the condition, seller, return policy, included charger, and exact claims about functionality. Do not pay a premium for an alleged active subscription or working cloud connection without independent proof—and do not assume such proof will be available.
Who was Amazon Halo for?
When it was active, Halo made the most sense for users who wanted a discreet, screen-free band and were comfortable reviewing their information on a phone. Its activity points could encourage consistent movement, its sleep reports offered a broad view of nightly patterns, and Labs added structured wellness content.
Recommended Free Tools
It was a poor fit for people who wanted:
- Real-time workout statistics on the wrist.
- GPS or serious sport-specific training analysis.
- A smartwatch with notifications and apps.
- A medical-grade body-fat or health assessment.
- A wearable without microphones or voice-analysis features.
- A product whose core capabilities do not depend on a continuing subscription service.
Those distinctions mattered at launch. Today, the discontinuation makes them secondary: Halo is not a viable purchase for any new fitness-tracking use case.

Final verdict
Amazon Halo was a bold experiment in wearable wellness. The screen-free hardware was comfortable and unobtrusive, and its activity and sleep features addressed familiar fitness needs in a less distracting form. Halo Labs gave the subscription genuine breadth.
But its most distinctive features were also its most divisive. Camera-based body-fat estimation was sensitive, approximate, and potentially damaging for users with body-image concerns. Tone made microphone privacy impossible to ignore and attempted to infer interpersonal qualities that should not be mistaken for objective psychological measurement.
The current verdict is even simpler than the historical one: Amazon ended Halo support, and the devices and app no longer function. Buy only for collecting or historical interest—not for fitness tracking.

Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Amazon Halo was an inventive, screen-free wellness band with useful activity and sleep concepts, but controversial Body and Tone features. Amazon discontinued Halo support in 2023, so neither the original Halo Band nor Halo View should be recommended as a functioning wearable today.
