Current verdict: do not buy Amazon Halo View. Amazon discontinued the entire Halo product line, ended support on July 31, 2023, and said Halo devices and the Halo app would stop functioning on August 1, 2023. A used or sealed Halo View is therefore not a cheap Fitbit alternative; it is nonfunctional hardware.
Historically, Halo View was an appealing but compromised fitness band: lightweight, comfortable, equipped with a color AMOLED display and reportedly strong battery life. Its most distinctive features lived in a subscription-backed app that also raised privacy questions.

What happened to Amazon Halo View?
Amazon announced the shutdown of Halo on April 26, 2023. Support ended July 31, and Amazon stated that Halo devices and the Halo app would no longer function beginning August 1, 2023. Amazon also announced refunds for eligible purchases made during the preceding 12 months and unused prepaid membership fees, but those were shutdown-related terms from 2023—not a current return or warranty policy.
Amazon said users could download or delete Halo health data from the app before the shutdown, save scan images to their phones, and that remaining Halo health data would be deleted after August 1, 2023. That was Amazon’s stated 2023 policy; it should not be treated as a currently verifiable data-recovery guarantee. Amazon’s shutdown announcement contains the original details.

What Halo View was supposed to be
Amazon announced Halo View in September 2021 and made it available in December 2021. It was a conventional wristband-style fitness tracker intended for people who wanted activity and sleep monitoring without buying a full smartwatch.
The original US launch price was $79.99, including one year of Halo membership. After that included period, membership cost $3.99 per month. These are historical US prices, not current buying terms.
Halo View followed the original screenless Halo Band. Adding a color display made it much easier to compare with Fitbit Inspire products: users could see activity information, time, notifications and workout metrics on their wrists instead of depending almost entirely on the phone app. The “Fitbit clone” label is a reasonable description of its form factor and basic use case, but it understates Amazon’s more ambitious—and controversial—software strategy.
Design and display
Halo View used a slim rectangular band with a color AMOLED display and haptic feedback. Contemporary coverage generally described it as lightweight and comfortable, with a simple on-device interface. Its appearance was functional rather than distinctive, but the screen was a meaningful improvement over the first Halo Band’s screenless design.
Amazon advertised the band as swim-proof. That wording should not be converted into a specific depth or swimming rating without a verified specification. The hardware also included a heart-rate sensor, blood-oxygen monitoring, skin-temperature sensing and an accelerometer.

The screen made basic information convenient to check, but Halo View was not a smartwatch. Contemporary reporting identified no built-in GPS, Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity. It was a phone-dependent fitness band, not an independent GPS sports watch or smartwatch. “Live workout metrics” did not mean that the band could replace a connected outdoor-training watch.
Fitness, sleep and health tracking
Halo View covered the expected basics: steps, activity, heart rate, sleep and workouts. A sleep score and other deeper interpretations were primarily delivered through the Halo app rather than being generated as a complete experience on the band.
Contemporary reviewers generally found the basic tracking useful for a consumer fitness band, along with a readable display and straightforward interface. That is a narrower endorsement than calling Halo View a serious sports device. It lacked the broader sports ecosystem, mature data history and training tools associated with established platforms such as Fitbit, Garmin and Apple.
It was also not a medical device. Blood-oxygen, temperature, heart-rate and sleep readings should be understood as consumer wellness measurements, not clinical diagnoses or a substitute for medical testing.
Battery life
Amazon claimed up to seven days of battery life. Contemporary reviews from Android Central and Android Authority reported that their review units met or exceeded roughly that figure in normal use, making battery life one of Halo View’s historical strengths. Screen use, sensor activity and workout tracking could affect endurance.
Amazon’s charging claims were inconsistent across launch materials: one version said charging took under two hours, while another said under 90 minutes. That discrepancy is worth noting rather than presenting either figure as definitive.
The app and the $3.99 membership
Halo View’s hardware was only part of the product. The Halo app supplied much of the platform’s differentiation, including workout content, nutrition tools and recipes, coaching-style programs, and additional sleep and health insights.
The first year of membership was included with the original purchase. Afterward, the $3.99 monthly fee was not especially high compared with many digital fitness services, but it changed the value calculation for a $79.99 tracker. Buyers were not simply purchasing a band; they were entering a service ecosystem whose more interesting features depended on continued access to Amazon’s platform.
Recommended Free Tools
Some basic functions may historically have worked without an active subscription. That distinction is irrelevant today because the entire service was shut down. A marketplace listing claiming that Halo View “works without subscription” does not solve the decisive problem: the device and app no longer function.
Privacy was central to the Halo experiment
Privacy concerns were not limited to the wristband’s sensors. The broader Amazon Halo platform included highly personal app experiences such as body-composition scanning from smartphone images and voice-tone analysis, alongside cloud-based health data.

The criticism should be described precisely. Halo View belonged to an ecosystem whose differentiation depended on unusually intimate health, body-image and behavioral information; that does not mean every controversial feature ran directly on the band, nor that the band secretly recorded conversations. The hardware and the wider Halo app experience were separate parts of the product.
That design created a difficult trade-off. Amazon offered more ambitious wellness analysis than a barebones tracker, but users had to decide whether the promised insights justified sharing sensitive information with a cloud service. The shutdown added a second lesson: privacy and continuity matter together when a connected health product depends on a manufacturer’s servers.

Amazon Halo View versus Fitbit
In its active period, Halo View had a credible argument against entry-level Fitbit trackers. It offered a low launch price, a bright color display, reported week-long battery life, a lightweight design and one year of membership. Amazon’s app also attempted more coaching and nutrition features than a simple step counter.
Fitbit’s advantages were its longer product history, larger user base and more established activity and health ecosystem. Contemporary Android Central coverage concluded that Fitbit Inspire 3 was arguably the better choice despite Fitbit Premium’s own subscription model, largely because the platform was more mature and had better long-term prospects at the time.
| Category | Amazon Halo View | Fitbit-style alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Display | Color AMOLED | Color display on comparable current models |
| Battery claim | Up to seven days | Varies by model |
| Subscription | One year included originally; $3.99/month afterward | Fitbit Premium is optional for some features |
| GPS | No built-in GPS | Varies by model; some use connected GPS |
| Ecosystem | Amazon Halo app and cloud service | More established Fitbit ecosystem |
| Current support | Shut down in 2023 | Depends on the specific supported model |
Today, the historical comparison is no longer close. Fitbit remains a live product category, while Halo View is not operational.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why old Halo View reviews are misleading now
Older reviews can still be useful for understanding the hardware. Their observations about comfort, battery life, display quality and the membership model belong to the 2021–2022 product period. But pages that retain “check price” buttons or describe Halo View as an affordable Fitbit alternative are commercially misleading unless they clearly disclose the shutdown.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A historical score based on hardware and app quality cannot be reused as a current buying recommendation. The fair summary is:
- Historical hardware: promising but compromised.
- Historical value: reasonable only for buyers comfortable with Amazon’s membership and ecosystem.
- Current value: zero as a functioning fitness tracker.
What to do if you find one for sale
- Do not buy it for tracking. It will not provide working step counts, sleep tracking, notifications or workouts.
- Do not trust “sealed” status. Unopened packaging does not restore discontinued cloud support.
- Do not rely on activation claims. A seller saying the app still pairs or activates is not evidence of a supported product.
- Do not treat a low price as compensation. The problem is not the price; it is the dead platform.
- Consider it only as nonfunctional hardware history. That is a collector’s decision, not a fitness purchase.
If you already own Amazon Halo View
Do not spend money on replacement bands, batteries or repairs expecting normal service to return. Treat any data as unavailable unless you exported it before the shutdown. Replace the tracker with a currently supported device and recycle the old electronics through an appropriate local channel. Amazon directed customers toward its recycling program during the shutdown, but the availability of that specific label process should not be assumed today.
Better replacements in 2026
There is no Amazon Halo successor identified in the available product information. Choose by use case instead:
Fitbit Inspire 3: closest band-style replacement
Fitbit Inspire 3 is the closest mainstream replacement for Halo View’s slim-band purpose. It offers a current Fitbit ecosystem, color display, activity and sleep tracking, and an advertised battery life of up to 10 days. Fitbit’s channel material also advertises a six-month Premium offer, though bundles and availability can vary by region and date. Check the official page for current price and support details.

Apple Watch SE 3: broader smartwatch features
For iPhone owners who want GPS, notifications, safety tools and a broader health ecosystem, Apple Watch SE 3 is a much more capable—but larger and more expensive—option. Apple’s US store lists it from $249 for GPS models and advertises up to 24 hours of battery life under its stated conditions. It is unsuitable for Android users or buyers who prioritize a light band and week-plus endurance. See Apple’s official Apple Watch SE page for current compatibility and pricing.
Garmin: better for structured training
Garmin’s current fitness trackers and watches are better suited to runners, structured workouts, training metrics and long-term fitness data. Model choice matters: a slim band and a GPS Forerunner-style watch serve very different users. Check Garmin’s official catalog for current models and prices rather than relying on an old listing.
Subscription-free budget bands
Current Xiaomi, Amazfit and other budget bands can be worth considering where they have verified official availability and support in your market. Do not choose solely from a discounted marketplace listing. Confirm phone compatibility, GPS capability, core features without a subscription and the vendor’s software-support position.
Final assessment
Amazon Halo View was not a terrible piece of hardware. Its color AMOLED display, comfortable band, simple interface and historically strong battery life made it a plausible low-cost Fitbit alternative in 2021. But its deeper value depended on an app, a subscription and Amazon’s willingness to maintain the platform. Privacy concerns around the wider Halo ecosystem made that dependence more significant, not less.
Amazon’s 2023 shutdown settles the buying question. Whether the listing is used, sealed, cheap or described as subscription-free, Halo View is not a functioning fitness tracker in 2026. Buy a currently supported replacement instead.
