Apple released the fifth public beta of watchOS 11 on August 21, 2024, giving members of its Apple Beta Software Program another pre-release look at Vitals, Training Load, more flexible Activity rings, a smarter Smart Stack, and other features. It arrived roughly one week after public beta 4 and ahead of the stable watchOS 11 release on September 16, 2024.
This is a historical report about the 2024 beta cycle—not a current 2026 software release. Anyone considering an old beta should also remember that watchOS beta software can affect battery life, health data, notifications, workouts, and app compatibility.

What Apple released
The August 21 update was watchOS 11 public beta 5, intended for non-developers enrolled in Apple’s public beta program. It was not the final version of watchOS 11, and the release itself appears to have been a routine testing build rather than a feature-specific launch.
Some coverage of the release referred to it as the “fourth” public beta in the body of the story. That appears to be a typo: the headline, release sequence, and subsequent references identify this update as the fifth public beta. Apple was also distributing developer builds during the same testing period, but public beta 5 should not automatically be treated as identical to a developer build without a verified build number.

Apple later released the stable watchOS 11 update on September 16, 2024. Its support documentation now lists later 11.x releases, so watchOS 11 public beta 5 should be understood as part of an older testing cycle. See Apple’s watchOS update history for the later-release context.
How to install the watchOS 11 public beta
The documented installation route for the 2024 public beta was:
- Enroll at the Apple Beta Software Program.
- Install the required iOS 18 public beta on the iPhone paired with the Apple Watch.
- Open the Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, then go to General > Software Update.
- Open Beta Updates and select watchOS 11 Public Beta.
- Return to the software-update screen and install the offered watchOS beta.
Labels can change between beta-program revisions and iOS versions. The essential requirements are enrollment, a compatible paired iPhone running the necessary iOS beta, and a compatible Apple Watch. Keep the watch on its charger, within range of the iPhone, and sufficiently charged while updating.

Vitals: the headline health feature
Vitals gives users a daily overview of selected overnight health measurements and flags readings that fall outside their usual range. Apple says the app considers multiple measurements and can provide contextual notifications when two or more metrics are unusual for the user.

Depending on the watch model, region, and available data, Vitals can include:
- Heart rate
- Respiratory rate
- Sleep-related data
- Wrist temperature
- Blood Oxygen, where supported and available
Apple says the system’s algorithm was informed by real-world data from the Apple Heart and Movement Study. However, a Vitals notification is not a medical diagnosis. An unusual reading can reflect illness, alcohol consumption, elevation, stress, recovery differences, a poor sensor fit, incomplete data, or an ordinary temporary variation. Users should not use Vitals to diagnose a condition or to rule one out. Apple’s overview of the feature is available in its watchOS 11 announcement.
Vitals also depends on consistent overnight wear. Someone who charges the watch overnight, removes it during sleep, or frequently runs out of battery may see missing measurements and less useful context. That is a practical limitation of the data source, not necessarily a software fault.
Blood Oxygen availability is not universal
Blood Oxygen should not be promised to every watchOS 11 user. Apple’s support documentation says that, in the United States, Blood Oxygen is unavailable in Vitals on affected Apple Watch models purchased on or after January 18, 2024, with qualifying part numbers ending in LW/A. Availability also varies by model and region. Check Apple’s feature documentation for the relevant limitation.

Training Load explains recent workout stress
Training Load is designed to put recent exercise in longer-term context. It is separate from the post-workout effort rating, which ranges from 1 to 10 and describes how difficult a workout felt.
Apple describes Training Load as comparing the most recent seven days of training with a weighted 28-day baseline. The resulting classification can be:
- Well below
- Below
- Steady
- Above
- Well above
For some cardio workouts, Apple estimates effort using factors such as duration, heart rate, GPS data, elevation, age, height, and weight. Users can adjust the estimate. Workouts without an automatic estimate—including some strength-training sessions—can receive a manually entered effort rating. Apple explains the calculation in its watchOS 11 fitness announcement.

A newly reset watch, sporadic wearer, or user with few recent workouts may not immediately see meaningful trend context.

Activity rings become more flexible
watchOS 11 lets users set different Move, Exercise, and Stand goals for different days of the week. That makes it easier to schedule lighter weekends, rest days, travel days, or different targets for weekday training.
Users can also pause their Activity rings for a day, a week, a month, or longer. Apple designed this for situations such as illness, injury, travel, or a planned break, and pausing does not destroy an existing award streak.

The Smart Stack gains new widgets, including Translate and Shazam, along with contextual suggestions based on factors such as time, date, location, and routine. watchOS 11 also adds interactive widgets and support for Live Activities.
These are watchOS 11 capabilities as a whole. They should not be described as features newly introduced by public beta 5 specifically; the beta provided access to the broader pre-release feature set while Apple continued testing and refining the software.

- Sleep apnea notifications: available only on supported models and in supported regions.
Feature availability can vary by device, language, and region, and beta behavior can change before a final release.
Compatibility and restrictions
Apple’s final watchOS 11 compatibility list included:
- Apple Watch Series 6 and later
- All Apple Watch Ultra models
- Apple Watch SE (2nd generation)
- An iPhone XS or later running iOS 18
This final-release list is not proof that every public-beta build behaved identically on every supported model. Some features have narrower requirements. Sleep apnea notifications, for example, are limited by both hardware and regional availability. Health sensors and measurements can also vary by Apple Watch model, local regulations, and purchase geography.

For most people, no—unless the watch is secondary or nonessential. A beta can be worthwhile for developers testing apps and complications, enthusiasts who want early access to Vitals and Training Load, or users willing to provide feedback before the final release.
Wait if you rely on the watch for dependable battery life, sleep tracking, workout records, notifications, safety-related functions, or health-adjacent monitoring. Pre-release software may cause crashes, battery drain, inaccurate or incomplete readings, connectivity problems, or incompatibility with apps and accessories. Apple’s beta software agreement warns that pre-release software may contain errors and advises backing up devices before participating.
Do not assume that you can simply return an Apple Watch to its previous watchOS version if the beta causes trouble. The rollback path is more restrictive than many users expect, and practical beta-testing guidance warns against installing watchOS beta software without accepting that recovery may be inconvenient or require service. Treat the beta as a commitment, not a risk-free preview.
Bottom line
Apple’s August 21, 2024 update was correctly identified as watchOS 11 public beta 5. Its importance was access to the wider watchOS 11 preview—especially Vitals, Training Load, flexible Activity rings, and Smart Stack improvements—not evidence that the fifth beta newly introduced every listed feature. For a primary Apple Watch, waiting for the stable release was the sensible choice; for a secondary watch or development device, the beta offered an early look at Apple’s next major software update.
