But this is no longer Apple’s current lineup: as of August 2026, Apple sells the Series 11, SE 3, and Ultra 3. Buy a Series 10, Ultra 2, or SE 2 today only when the discount is substantial, the condition is clear, and the watch suits your iPhone.

Quick verdict
- Best overall in 2025: Apple Watch Series 10. It combined a thin, light design with an always-on display, ECG, temperature sensing, sleep-apnea notifications, and fast charging.
- Best budget option: Apple Watch SE 2, if you only need core smartwatch, fitness, and safety features and can accept its missing health sensors and slower charging.
- Best for battery and rugged use: Apple Watch Ultra 2, especially for hiking, endurance events, diving-related activities, remote travel, or cellular use away from an iPhone.
- Best new purchase in 2026: Usually the Series 11, SE 3, or Ultra 3 instead. Apple’s U.S. shop lists them from $399, $249, and $799 respectively, so an older model must be meaningfully cheaper to be worthwhile. Check Apple’s current lineup.

Apple Watch SE 2: the inexpensive one
The SE 2 is a capable entry-level Apple Watch, but it is not simply a smaller Series 10. It provides notifications, Apple Pay, workouts, sleep tracking, basic heart-rate monitoring, fall detection, crash detection, irregular-rhythm notifications, and optional cellular connectivity.
#1 Best Overall
- A FULL-FEATURED HEALTH TRACKER—Apple Watch Series 11 gives you invaluable insights about your body, right from your wrist. Take an ECG anytime* and get alerts for a high and low heart rate or an irregular rhythm*—so you can stay closer to your heart. You can also view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app* and be notified of possible sleep apnea.*
- KNOW YOUR SLEEP SCORE—With advanced sleep tracking, Series 11 gives you a daily sleep score. It’s an easy way to help measure and understand the quality of your sleep, so you can make it more restorative.
- GET HYPERTENSION NOTIFICATIONS—Did you know that Series 11 can spot signs of chronic high blood pressure? By analyzing how your blood vessels respond to beats of the heart, it can notify you of possible hypertension.*
- SAFETY FEATURES—A smartwatch that puts your safety first. Series 11 can detect a hard fall or severe car crash, automatically help connect you with emergency services, and notify your emergency contacts.* Check In can automatically notify a loved one when you’ve arrived at your destination.
- A POWERFUL FITNESS TRACKER—With advanced metrics and motivating features like Pacer, Heart Rate Zones, training load, and Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence from your nearby iPhone*—Series 11 is made to help everyone stay active, from runners and hikers to strength-training enthusiasts.
What the SE 2 does well
- Lower purchase price than the premium models.
- 40mm and 44mm cases that suit smaller wrists better than the Ultra 2.
- Core Apple Watch integration for notifications, activity, workouts, payments, and safety features.
- Compatibility with older iPhones than Series 10 or Ultra 2.
What it lacks
- No always-on display.
- No ECG app.
- No temperature sensor.
- No sleep-apnea notifications.
- No blood-oxygen app.
- No fast charging.
- Older S8 chip.
- Aluminum-only construction and lower maximum display brightness than the other two models.
Choose it when the priority is an inexpensive Apple Watch for ordinary notifications, workouts, sleep tracking, Apple Pay, and safety features. In 2026, however, it should be clearly below Apple’s $249 starting price for the newer SE 3. A barely discounted SE 2 is a weak purchase, particularly because it is not listed among the models supported by watchOS 27.
Apple Watch Series 10: the best balance
For the 2025 lineup, Series 10 was the default recommendation for most iPhone owners. Its 42mm and 46mm cases, thinner profile, always-on Retina display, health sensors, and faster charging made it more practical for everyday wear than the Ultra 2 without the SE 2’s major omissions.
Why choose Series 10
- Always-on display for checking the time and information without raising your wrist.
- ECG, temperature sensing, and sleep-apnea notifications.
- Fast charging, which is particularly useful when tracking sleep.
- Aluminum or titanium case options.
- Much thinner and lighter than the 49mm Ultra 2.
Its limitations
- Apple rates normal battery life at up to 18 hours, so daily charging is usually part of ownership.
- Aluminum versions use Ion-X glass rather than sapphire crystal.
- No action button, depth gauge, or 100-meter water-resistance rating.
- Cellular is optional rather than standard.
- It is not the best choice for multi-day trips without access to a charger.
In 2026, do not pay approximately $399 for a Series 10 when Apple’s current Series 11 starts at that price. A discounted, refurbished, or open-box Series 10 can still be the sweet spot if its price is substantially lower and its battery condition is good.

Apple Watch Ultra 2: battery and outdoor hardware
The Ultra 2’s premium price primarily buys endurance, materials, visibility, and outdoor tools—not radically different everyday watch software. It broadly matches Series 10’s major health features while adding hardware for users who will actually benefit from it.
Reasons to buy Ultra 2
- 49mm titanium case and sapphire crystal front.
- Apple-rated battery life of up to 36 hours normally and up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode under Apple’s test conditions.
- 100-meter water resistance and IP6X dust resistance.
- Action button for quick access to configurable functions.
- Depth gauge and Depth app.
- More visible display, dual speakers, and a three-microphone array.
- Cellular connectivity included.
Reasons not to buy it
- The 49mm case is large and comparatively heavy.
- It can be less comfortable during sleep, exercise, or under fitted clothing.
- Most people who carry an iPhone do not need its extra battery or rugged construction.
- Cellular still requires a compatible carrier plan and may add recurring costs.
- Titanium and sapphire improve resistance but do not make the watch indestructible.
Ultra 2 is a sensible choice for hikers, endurance athletes, divers and outdoor users, or anyone who genuinely values multi-day endurance. In 2026, compare it directly with the Ultra 3: at or near Apple’s $799 starting price, Ultra 2 is difficult to justify.
Feature-by-feature differences
Display and comfort
The SE 2 offers the smallest cases and is the safest choice for buyers with smaller wrists or a tight budget. Series 10 is the strongest everyday-wear option for many people because its case is thinner and lighter than Ultra 2 while retaining an always-on display. Ultra 2 provides a larger, more visible screen, but a larger screen is not automatically more comfortable. Wrist circumference, case thickness, weight, and band choice matter.

Health tracking
SE 2 covers basic heart-rate monitoring, activity and workout tracking, sleep tracking, and safety alerts. Series 10 adds ECG, temperature sensing, and sleep-apnea notifications. Ultra 2 broadly matches Series 10’s principal health functions.
These features are for wellness or informational purposes, not diagnosis. Availability can vary by country, age, regulatory approval, device version, and software. Sleep-apnea notifications are not a substitute for clinical evaluation, and blood-oxygen functionality may vary by region and import history. Verify the exact device before buying; Apple’s feature and support information explains the limitations.
Battery and charging
SE 2 and Series 10 are effectively one-day watches under Apple’s ratings. Series 10’s fast charging makes it more convenient for people who remove the watch briefly to charge, including users who want sleep tracking. Ultra 2’s larger battery is better for long GPS workouts, travel, and tracking sleep across multiple nights.

For a used watch, battery health can matter more than the original model rating. Check Settings → Battery → Battery Health → Maximum Capacity before purchasing when possible.
GPS and cellular
GPS models generally depend on the paired iPhone for calls, messages, streaming, and connected services when away from known Wi-Fi. GPS + Cellular models can remain connected away from the phone with a compatible carrier plan. SE 2 and Series 10 were available in GPS and GPS + Cellular configurations; Ultra 2 includes cellular.
Recommended Free Tools
Cellular is worthwhile for runners, children, or people who regularly leave their phone behind. It is unnecessary for many buyers who always carry an iPhone and do not want another monthly line. Check carrier availability before paying extra.

Compatibility and software support
Apple’s compatibility table lists these baseline requirements:
- SE 2: iPhone 8 or later with iOS 16 or later.
- Series 10: iPhone XS or later with iOS 18 or later.
- Ultra 2: iPhone XS or later with iOS 17 or later.
As of Apple’s watchOS 27 compatibility information, supported models include SE 3, Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, Ultra 2, and Ultra 3. SE 2 is not listed. This does not prove a fixed end date for all support, but it makes SE 2 the riskiest of these three for software longevity. Do not assume that a future watchOS release will support any particular model.
Readers with an iPhone 8, iPhone X, or another older compatible iPhone may find SE 2 is the only technically suitable option among these models. Current Series 11, SE 3, and Ultra 3 require iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26 or later, according to Apple’s support information.

Treat these watches as clearance, refurbished, open-box, or used products rather than current full-price models.
- Compare with the current replacement. Series 10 must be substantially cheaper than Series 11; Ultra 2 must be meaningfully below Ultra 3; SE 2 must be clearly below SE 3.
- Confirm the exact model and size. Check case size, GPS or cellular configuration, material, and regional model details.
- Check battery health. Use Settings → Battery → Battery Health → Maximum Capacity.
- Confirm Activation Lock is removed. A watch still linked to another owner cannot be set up normally.
- Check cellular status. Confirm it is not tied to an account or carrier arrangement that prevents activation.
- Inspect the hardware. Check the display, rear crystal, sensors, Digital Crown, side button, speakers, and charging puck.
- Verify accessories. Confirm that the advertised band and charger are included and compatible.
- Use a seller with returns. Avoid suspiciously cheap devices without serial-number verification, warranty coverage, or a return policy.
- Check your iPhone first. Compatibility requirements can eliminate an otherwise attractive deal.
- Price repair protection separately. AppleCare+ and accidental-damage costs can erase the savings on a used watch. Review Apple’s coverage information.
Apple’s trade-in page and support documentation can help identify models and assess service options, but trade-in values and availability change.
Which one should you buy?
- First-time buyer: Series 10 if it is substantially discounted; otherwise Series 11.
- Budget buyer: SE 2 only at a deep discount and when its software position is acceptable; otherwise SE 3.
- Runner: Series 10 for comfort and fast charging; Ultra 2 if long GPS sessions and battery endurance matter more than size.
- Hiker, diver, or endurance user: Ultra 2 when it is well below Ultra 3 and you need its battery, durability, cellular service, or depth tools.
- Sleep tracker: Series 10 for the balance of comfort and fast charging; Ultra 2 for multi-day endurance if its size is comfortable.
- Older-iPhone owner: Check compatibility first. SE 2 may remain the correct choice for an iPhone 8 or another phone that cannot run the newer models.
- Child or Family Setup buyer: Verify age rules, carrier support, regional restrictions, and which features work through Family Setup before choosing based on price.
- Buyer upgrading from an older Apple Watch: Series 10 provides the broadest everyday improvement; Ultra 2 is worthwhile only if you specifically need endurance or outdoor hardware.
For a new purchase in 2026, the safest rule is simple: compare every older-watch deal with Apple’s current Series 11, SE 3, and Ultra 3 prices, then factor in battery health, warranty, returns, cellular costs, and iPhone compatibility—not just the model name.
