If Apple Watch Compass shows a red spinning radar instead of a steady heading, it does not automatically mean the compass sensor has failed. Apple lists magnetic interference, disabled Location Services, and disabled Compass Calibration as possible causes. Start by removing magnetic accessories, then check the two settings before restarting or resetting anything.
First, identify what is going wrong
The Compass dial should move as you turn your wrist. That normal movement is different from Apple’s red spinning radar screen, which can indicate a magnetic environment or a settings problem. Apple documents those causes in its Apple Watch Compass guide.
- Red radar keeps spinning: Check for magnets, then verify Location Services and Compass Calibration.
- Heading settles but seems wrong: Check for nearby magnetic objects and make sure you are comparing the same north reference—true or magnetic.
- Coordinates or elevation are missing: Check Location Services and location availability; that alone does not prove the magnetic sensor has failed.
- Compass freezes, crashes, or will not open: Treat it as a possible app or system problem and proceed to restarting and updating.
Apple has not established a universal watchOS 9 Compass defect in the guidance cited here, so do not assume the operating system is the cause.
Remove the band and nearby magnets
This is the quickest reversible test. Apple warns that magnetic materials in some bands may interfere with Compass. The bands it identifies include Leather Link, Leather Loop, Milanese Loop, and earlier Sport Loop bands. Apple says Sport Loop bands introduced in September 2019 or later, and all Sport Band versions, are not affected by this particular band-related issue; that is not a guarantee of perfect readings in every environment. See Apple’s Compass accuracy and band guidance.

- Remove the watch band and take the watch off its charger.
- Move away from magnetic chargers, phones, speakers, laptop covers, bags with magnetic clasps, vehicle mounts, tools, and metal surfaces.
- Open Compass in an open area, hold the watch level, and turn it slowly.
- If it responds normally without the band or away from an object, test those items separately to identify the likely source. Replace a band that consistently causes interference with a non-magnetic alternative.
Indoor metal structures and electronics can also affect readings, so test outdoors if practical. Repeatedly waving the watch in a figure eight is not Apple’s documented universal fix for this red-radar symptom.
Turn on Location Services on the watch
Location Services support location-dependent Compass information. On the Apple Watch:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy or Privacy & Security, depending on the software version.
- Tap Location Services and turn it on.
Apple’s instructions are in its Compass guide; its Location Services help explains that turning this service off prevents location-based apps and services from using location data.

Enable Compass Calibration on the paired iPhone
This is an iPhone system setting, not a button in the watch’s Compass app. On the iPhone paired with the watch:

- Tap Privacy & Security (or Privacy on older iOS versions).
- Tap Location Services, then scroll down to System Services.
- Turn on Compass Calibration.
Apple identifies this setting in its Apple Watch Compass instructions. It is distinct from manually calibrating the watch by moving it in a particular pattern.
Restart both devices
Restart the watch and its paired iPhone, then test Compass again. The watch cannot be restarted while it is charging.

- GREAT BATTERY LIFE AND FASTER CHARGING—Enjoy a smartwatch with all-day, 18-hour battery life* from sunup to sundown. Then charge up to twice as fast as SE 2* and get up to 8 hours of battery in just 15 minutes.*
- On the watch, press and hold the side button until the controls appear.
- Tap the power control and drag the power-off slider.
- Turn the watch back on by holding the side button until the Apple logo appears.
- Restart the iPhone, then reopen Compass on the watch.
If the watch is unresponsive and will not restart normally, hold the side button and Digital Crown together for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears. This force restart does not erase the watch and is not a calibration method. See Apple’s restart instructions.
Check whether the heading is using True North
A steady heading that differs from a map or another compass may reflect different north references rather than a failed sensor. Apple Watch can use True North: open Settings > Compass on the watch and turn on Use True North. Compare readings using the same reference. Changing this setting does not repair a spinning or unresponsive sensor. Apple describes the option in its Compass guide.
Update iOS and watchOS
Updates can address software faults, but Apple does not promise that a particular update fixes this symptom. Install updates available for both devices if they are compatible:

- On iPhone, open the Watch app, tap My Watch > General > Software Update, and install an available watchOS update.
- On iPhone, open Settings > General > Software Update to check for iOS.
Available versions depend on the watch model, paired iPhone, and Apple’s current compatibility support. Use Apple Watch Support and Apple’s watchOS update instructions for current steps.
Use the result to choose the next step
This table is a practical interpretation of the tests, not an Apple-certified fault-code system.
| What happens | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| Compass works after removing the band | The band may have been interfering. |
| Compass works away from a charger or metal object | Nearby magnetic or environmental interference is likely. |
| Red radar stops after enabling Location Services | The location setting may have been responsible. |
| Red radar stops after enabling Compass Calibration | The iPhone’s system calibration setting may have been responsible. |
| Heading is stable but consistently offset | Check magnetic interference and True North versus magnetic north before suspecting hardware. |
| Compass remains unstable in several magnet-free locations after settings, restart, and updates | A persistent software issue, interference source, or sensor fault is possible. |
| Other sensor-based apps also behave incorrectly | A broader watch software or hardware problem becomes more plausible. |
| Compass crashes or freezes | An app or system problem is more likely than ordinary heading instability. |
Reinstall Compass only if the app itself is the problem
If Compass is missing or appears damaged, reinstalling it may help. Apple says removing Compass from the iPhone also removes it from Apple Watch; use the Compass app instructions at Apple’s user guide. Reinstallation is not the first response to a red radar screen that may be caused by a band, magnet, or disabled setting.

Unpair and pair again only as a last software step
If the problem persists after the environmental, setting, restart, and update checks, unpairing and pairing again may help rule out a persistent pairing or software problem. It requires setup again and can affect settings; Apple says unpairing creates a backup on the iPhone, but confirm that you have a recent backup before proceeding. If the watch is disconnected, first check that the devices are near one another, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are available, and Airplane Mode is off. Apple’s instructions cover connection troubleshooting and unpairing and erasing.
When to contact Apple for service
Arrange Apple diagnostics or service if Compass remains unusable without the band, away from magnets and metal, with both settings enabled, after restarting and updating, and across multiple locations. A recent drop or exposure outside the watch’s intended water conditions is another reason not to keep repeating software steps. Start at Apple Watch Support or Apple Repair; service options and costs depend on model, coverage, damage, and diagnostic results.
Do not rely on a faulty compass for critical navigation
Apple describes the digital compass as basic navigation assistance, not a precision instrument for location, proximity, distance, or direction. Do not use a malfunctioning watch as your only navigation aid. Carry a suitable backup, such as a reliable compass, GPS device, or map, when the activity requires it. See Apple’s compass accuracy guidance.
