Fitbit information quoted in recent BBB complaints gives a three-to-six-week period after receipt. BBB records include complaints filed in 2025 and 2026 from customers who say they waited longer, including cases where Fitbit confirmed delivery. Those complaints show a recurring problem, but no public source establishes how many claims remain unpaid or why every delayed claim is late.
This guide explains which watch qualifies, how to prove delivery and claim matching, what to ask Fitbit, and where to escalate an overdue payment. The $299 figure applies to the U.S. recall; other countries can have different remedies.

Which Fitbit Ionic watches were recalled?
The recall covers the Fitbit Ionic model FB503, announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on March 2, 2022. Its lithium-ion battery could overheat and cause burns. The notice reported about one million U.S. units, about 693,000 international units, at least 115 overheating reports and 78 burn injuries, including two third-degree and four second-degree burns.
Recalled color and edition variants include:
- Slate blue/burnt orange
- Charcoal/smoke gray
- Blue gray/silver gray
- Adidas edition
The model number is printed on the back of the watch near the band attachment. Versa, Sense, Charge and other Fitbit models are not covered by this specific recall. Stop wearing or charging an FB503 Ionic. See the CPSC recall notice for the official scope and instructions.

What Fitbit promised in the recall
| Remedy or stage | What the official notice or customer records establish |
|---|---|
| Return | Prepaid packaging was provided for sending the watch back. |
| Refund | $299 for a participating U.S. consumer after Fitbit received the returned Ionic. |
| Replacement incentive | A 40% discount code for selected Fitbit devices. |
| Published processing benchmark | Three to six weeks after receipt, according to Fitbit information quoted in BBB complaints. |
“Eligible,” “received,” “accepted,” “authorized” and “paid” are different points in the process. Customers report that support agents sometimes gave separate waiting periods for these stages. That is a reported service pattern, not a publicly documented universal workflow. The CPSC announcement says the refund would be issued “upon receipt,” while current complaint records describe operational delays after delivery.
Why a returned Ionic may still show no refund
A delay does not establish one universal cause. Possible explanations include:
- The submitted watch was not an FB503 or the claim was incomplete.
- The carrier delivered the parcel, but Fitbit did not match it to the claim or account.
- The device was received but eligibility or acceptance was not completed.
- Refund authorization is pending even though warehouse receipt was recorded.
- A payment failed, went to a replacement or closed account, or was returned.
- Several Ionics were submitted under one claim, leaving one device unresolved.
- Regional rules or documentation differ from the U.S. process.
Public BBB and community reports illustrate these possibilities but do not prove that every complaint is valid or unresolved.
How to document an overdue claim
Build one file for each watch. Keep copies or screenshots of:

- Prepaid-label information and carrier tracking.
- Delivery date, destination and any signature or scan details.

- Chat transcripts, call dates, agent names and case numbers.
- The original purchase record, if available.

Contact the recall channel with specific questions
The original CPSC notice lists Fitbit’s Ionic recall number as 888-925-1764 and points consumers to Fitbit recall help. Verify the current number and hours in the CPSC notice or official Fitbit support before calling, because channels can change.
Ask the agent to answer each question and provide the response in writing:
- Has the physical device been received?
- Has the package been matched to my claim and serial number?
- Has it been accepted as an eligible FB503?
- Has the $299 refund been authorized?
- Was a payment sent, and on what date?
- Was it rejected, returned or otherwise reversed?
- Is a replacement payment required?
- What is the escalation or case number?
- What exact date should I expect resolution?
A concise written request can say: “My FB503 Ionic, claim [number], was delivered on [date] under tracking [number]. Please confirm receipt, claim matching, eligibility, refund authorization, payment date or failure reason, and the escalation case number.”

When is the delay unreasonable?
Use the three-to-six-week period quoted in BBB records as a practical benchmark, counting from the date Fitbit can document receiving the watch—not merely the date you mailed it. If that period has passed, request an escalation rather than sending another device. The current public record does not establish a replacement universal deadline from Fitbit.
Escalation options and their limits
CPSC complaint
Report a problem with the recalled product or remedy through the CPSC recall channel. This documents a recall-remedy issue, but the CPSC does not guarantee recovery of an individual $299 payment.
BBB complaint
A complaint to the BBB Fitbit directory can create a public record and may prompt a company response. BBB is not a regulator and cannot adjudicate or compel payment.
State or national consumer authority
Contact the relevant agency where you live. Procedures and powers vary by jurisdiction.
Written demand or legal advice
For an unusually old or high-value claim, consider a written demand or local legal advice. Check limitation periods, arbitration provisions and proof requirements before filing. Fitbit’s current terms of service contain dispute and arbitration language, but general terms do not determine every recall-specific remedy.
A chargeback is not a standard fix for a years-old recall claim and may not fit the remedy. Do not describe a BBB complaint or CPSC report as a guaranteed collection method.

Fitbit says the watch was never received
Send the tracking number, claim reference and delivery date together. Ask Fitbit to open a warehouse-receipt investigation. “Delivered” proves carrier delivery to the stated destination, but it does not by itself prove that Fitbit matched the parcel to your account.
Fitbit says the refund was issued
Request the payment date, method, transaction or trace number, and confirmation of whether the payment was returned. Check the original card account, a replacement card, a closed account, PayPal or another account supplied during registration, and statements around the stated payment date.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe original payment method is gone
Explain that the account or card changed and ask what alternate process is available for your country and claim. Do not assume Fitbit will issue a check, PayPal payment or replacement card unless it confirms that option.
You returned more than one Ionic
Treat each watch as a separate claim unless Fitbit confirms otherwise. Keep individual serial numbers, claim IDs, tracking numbers and confirmation emails. BBB and community accounts describe one device being paid while another remained unresolved; those are anecdotal examples, not prevalence data.
You are outside the United States
The CPSC notice covers the U.S. recall and separately discusses international sales and incidents. Refund amounts, deadlines, agencies and payment rules can differ by country. Do not assume the U.S. $299 remedy applies everywhere.
Someone asks for money to release the refund
Do not send a processing fee, gift card, cryptocurrency, banking password or remote-access credentials. The Federal Trade Commission’s refund guidance warns that legitimate refund programs do not require consumers to transfer money to receive a refund.
What the $12.25 million CPSC penalty does—and does not—mean
On January 23, 2025, Fitbit agreed to a $12.25 million civil penalty in a CPSC matter concerning alleged failure to promptly report the Ionic hazard. The enforcement release describes a government penalty tied to reporting obligations and the burn hazard. It does not announce a consumer fund or say that all delayed refunds were resolved. A civil penalty paid to the government is separate from the $299 recall refund.
What is actually established about the scale of the problem?
BBB complaint records, including 2026 entries, show repeated reports of refunds delayed beyond the quoted three-to-six-week period. Community posts describe long waits and inconsistent explanations. Those are public complaint patterns, not a verified count. Fitbit has not publicly provided an aggregate number of unpaid claims or a universal resolution timetable in the sources cited here. The available evidence therefore supports “repeated customer reports,” not a claim that most or all customers remain unpaid.
Before choosing a replacement watch
Resolve the refund and discount-code status first. The CPSC notice confirms a 40% discount on selected Fitbit devices, but current eligibility, expiration and model lists were not established here. Ask Fitbit in writing whether the code remains valid, which products qualify, its expiration date and whether it can be used independently of an unpaid refund. A Pixel Watch or Garmin watch may suit some users, but neither is a guaranteed substitute for Ionic features, and buying one does not resolve the recall claim.
