Apple Watch Series 10 is not a dramatic health upgrade over Series 9. Both models share the important health platform, including ECG, heart-rate alerts, sleep tracking, cycle tracking, wrist-temperature sensing, Vitals, and Sleep Apnea Notifications. Series 10’s real hardware additions are a depth gauge and water-temperature sensor, plus faster charging that may make overnight wear easier.
Short answer: Apple Watch Series 10 is an incremental health upgrade over Series 9, not a fundamentally more capable health monitor. Both watches offer ECG, heart-rate alerts, irregular-rhythm notifications, wrist-temperature sensing, cycle tracking, sleep stages, medications, mindfulness, noise monitoring, Vitals, and—when the software and eligibility requirements are met—Sleep Apnea Notifications. Series 10’s meaningful health-adjacent hardware additions are a depth gauge and water-temperature sensor.
That makes Series 9 the better value if your priorities are heart, sleep, cycle, and general wellness features. Choose Series 10 if you regularly swim or snorkel, want water-temperature and depth data, or will benefit from its faster charging and newer hardware.

The core heart-health features are essentially the same
Both watches include an electrical heart sensor for the ECG app and an optical heart sensor for monitoring heart rate. Both can notify you about unusually high or low heart rates and can provide irregular-rhythm notifications where the feature is available and you meet Apple’s eligibility requirements.

There is no documented Series 10-only advantage for ECG readings or routine heart-rate alerts. If those are your main reasons for buying an Apple Watch, Series 9 already provides the relevant hardware and software.
There are important limits. Irregular-rhythm notifications do not continuously check for atrial fibrillation and cannot detect every instance. Apple also says the feature is not intended for people already diagnosed with AFib. Neither watch can detect a heart attack. An ECG or notification is information to discuss with a clinician, not a diagnosis or substitute for emergency care.
Sleep Apnea Notifications work on both models
Sleep Apnea Notifications are one of the easiest features to misunderstand in this comparison. Series 10 launched alongside the feature, but Series 9 also supports it. Apple introduced the capability for Series 9, Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 through watchOS 11.
The watch uses its accelerometer to monitor small wrist movements associated with breathing disturbances during sleep. It looks for consistent signs that may be associated with moderate to severe sleep apnea and can notify you when the pattern warrants further attention. It does not diagnose sleep apnea.

Apple’s current setup guidance requires:
- Apple Watch Series 9 or later;
- the latest compatible watchOS and iOS versions;
- sleep tracking enabled;
- at least 10 nights of wear during a 30-day evaluation period; and
- an adult user who has not already been diagnosed with sleep apnea.
Availability can also depend on country or region. A notification is a screening-oriented wellness signal, not treatment advice. If you receive one, discuss it with a healthcare professional rather than treating it as a confirmed diagnosis.
Vitals is not a Series 10-exclusive health upgrade
watchOS 11 added the Vitals app, which puts key overnight measurements together and shows whether they are typical for your personal baseline. Depending on availability and setup, those measurements include heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, and sleep duration.

Because Series 9 supports watchOS 11 and has the relevant sensors, Vitals is best understood as a software-era feature available on both watches. Series 10 does not have an exclusive Vitals sensor that makes its overnight health context inherently more capable.
The practical difference may instead be adherence. Series 10 can charge to 80% in about 30 minutes under Apple’s stated conditions, compared with slower charging on Series 9. Faster charging can make it easier to wear the watch overnight consistently, but charging convenience is not a new health measurement.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Temperature sensing and cycle tracking: no major Series 10 advantage
Series 9 already includes wrist-temperature sensing and Cycle Tracking with retrospective ovulation estimates. Series 10 retains those capabilities; it does not introduce a new temperature-based women’s-health feature that makes Series 9 obsolete.
Retrospective ovulation estimates use logged cycle data and changes in sensed wrist temperature. They are not a direct ovulation test. Apple also says wrist-temperature sensing is not intended for medical use.
For cycle tracking, the more important factors are consistent wear, accurate logging, and understanding what the estimates represent. Moving from Series 9 to Series 10 will not, by itself, turn retrospective estimates into real-time or clinically diagnostic measurements.
Series 10’s genuine health-adjacent advantage: water sensing
Series 10 adds two pieces of hardware that Series 9 does not have: a depth gauge and a water-temperature sensor.

The depth gauge measures depths down to 6 meters, or 20 feet. The Depth app can show current depth, maximum depth, time underwater, and water temperature. That makes Series 10 more useful for activities such as swimming, snorkeling, shallow diving, and underwater pool use.
This is the clearest hardware difference in the health and wellness comparison. It matters if you routinely spend time in the water. It is largely irrelevant if your priorities are ECG, sleep, heart-rate notifications, cycle tracking, or general wellness.
Important: Series 10 is not a recreational scuba-diving computer. Apple’s support guidance says the Depth app does not provide decompression-stop information, gas analysis, or equivalent scuba functions. Do not use it as a substitute for dedicated dive equipment.
Blood Oxygen availability depends on the model, region, and unit
Blood Oxygen is not a simple “Series 9 yes, Series 10 no” or “Series 10 yes, Series 9 no” comparison.
Apple lists the Blood Oxygen app as available on Series 6 and later in supported countries and regions. However, U.S. availability depends on the particular watch and when it was purchased. Apple says some U.S. units purchased on or after January 18, 2024—with part numbers ending in LW/A—process Blood Oxygen data on the paired iPhone, with results viewed in the Health app.
Apple has also described a redesigned experience for some U.S. Series 9 and Series 10 users who did not have the original Blood Oxygen feature. After the required iPhone and Apple Watch updates, the iPhone performs the measurement and calculation.

Do not assume that every Series 9 or Series 10 sold in the U.S. behaves the same way. In supported markets, the feature is for general wellness and is not intended for medical use.

Choose Series 9 if you want the core health platform
Apple Watch Series 9 is the sensible choice when your priorities are ECG, high- and low-heart-rate alerts, irregular-rhythm notifications, sleep stages, Sleep Apnea Notifications, cycle tracking, wrist-temperature trends, medications, mindfulness, and noise monitoring.
You get nearly the same core health experience as Series 10, provided the watch supports the required watchOS version and the feature is available to you. Series 9 is especially compelling when it is substantially less expensive than Series 10. Availability and pricing change, so compare the actual current price and condition rather than assuming a fixed discount.
Choose Series 10 if water data or charging matters
Apple Watch Series 10 makes more sense if you want the depth gauge and water-temperature sensor, or if faster charging will help you maintain consistent overnight wear.
Best Value
- STAY CLOSER TO YOUR HEART HEALTH—The most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable,* Series 12 now measures HRV as often as every five minutes for insights on stress and recovery, and takes background heart rate readings every five seconds.
- A FULL-FEATURED HEALTH TRACKER—Better understand your body with invaluable health insights. View your overnight health metrics with the Vitals app and get a daily sleep score,* track your menstrual cycle,5 and take readings of your blood oxygen.*
- CHECK YOUR READINESS FOR THE DAY—Know when to rest or put yourself to the test. The readiness experience can help you determine your capacity to take on the day by analyzing your recent activity, vitals, and sleep.
- A POWERFUL FITNESS TRACKER—With advanced metrics and motivating features like Pacer, Heart Rate Zones, and Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence from your nearby iPhone8—Series 12 helps you stay active, from running to hiking to strength training.
- KEEP HELP CLOSE AT HAND—A smartwatch that puts your safety first. Series 12 can detect a hard fall or severe car crash, automatically help connect you with emergency services, and notify your emergency contacts.*
Its water sensors are the only major health-adjacent hardware additions in this comparison. They are useful for swimmers and snorkelers, but they do not make Series 10 a medical device or a scuba computer. If you never use water-depth or water-temperature data, the health case for paying more is comparatively weak.
A practical decision checklist
- Are you buying mainly for ECG or heart alerts? Series 9 is generally sufficient; both models support these features.
- Are Sleep Apnea Notifications your deciding feature? Either model can support them. Confirm compatible watchOS, iOS, setup, region, and eligibility.
- Do you want wrist temperature or cycle tracking? Both watches provide these capabilities.
- Do you swim or snorkel and want depth and water-temperature data? Choose Series 10.
- Will you wear the watch overnight? Series 10’s faster charging may make consistent wear easier, but it does not add a new health sensor.
- Are you considering Blood Oxygen? Check your country, purchase date, exact unit, and current Apple support information before buying.
- Are you expecting a medical diagnostic device? Neither watch should be used that way. Treat notifications and estimates as wellness information and seek professional care for symptoms or concerns.
Bottom line
For health features alone, Apple Watch Series 10 is an evolutionary upgrade over Series 9. The two watches share the important heart, sleep, temperature, cycle-tracking, medication, mindfulness, noise, Vitals, and sleep-apnea capabilities. Series 10’s meaningful new health-adjacent hardware is its depth gauge and water-temperature sensor.
Buy Series 9 for the established health stack and better value. Buy Series 10 for water activities, faster charging, and newer hardware—not because it unlocks ECG, sleep apnea, or cycle-tracking features that Series 9 cannot provide.

What health features are new on Apple Watch Series 10?
Series 10 adds a depth gauge and water-temperature sensor. It also charges faster, which can make overnight health tracking more convenient. The main heart, sleep, temperature, cycle, and wellness features are shared.
Can Apple Watch Series 9 or 10 diagnose health conditions?
Neither model is a medical diagnostic device. ECG, irregular-rhythm notifications, temperature data, and sleep-apnea notifications have specific limitations and should not replace professional medical advice.
Does Apple Watch Series 10 have Blood Oxygen?
It depends on the country, purchase date, and exact unit. Some U.S. Series 9 and Series 10 watches process Blood Oxygen data on the paired iPhone rather than directly on the watch. Check the unit’s part number and Apple’s current support guidance.
The Bottom Line
Verdict: Series 9 and Series 10 are much closer in health capability than their names suggest. Series 10 wins for depth and water-temperature sensing and may be easier to wear consistently because it charges faster; Series 9 delivers nearly the same core health experience for less when available at a good price.
