For most iPhone users, the Apple Watch Series 11 is the best everyday choice; the Ultra 3 is for people who need more battery and outdoor capability, while the SE 3 is the value pick for basic smartwatch needs. The differences that matter most are how each watch wears, what health and outdoor tools it offers, and how often you want to charge it—not raw speed. All three use Apple’s S10 chip.
The Verge published hands-on coverage of the three watches on September 9, 2025. The impressions below are attributed to that coverage; specifications and feature availability are drawn from Apple’s product and support information. The Verge’s hands-on coverage
Which Apple Watch fits which buyer?
| Model | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch Series 11 | Everyday wear, workouts, sleep tracking, and advanced health features in a relatively slim design | More expensive than the SE 3; less battery and ruggedness than the Ultra 3 |
| Apple Watch Ultra 3 | Long workouts, hiking, water sports, travel, and users who value battery margin and physical controls | Its 49mm case is larger and heavier, and it is the premium option |
| Apple Watch SE 3 | First-time buyers, families, and people who want notifications, activity tracking, and core safety features | Fewer advanced health sensors and less battery margin than the other two |
Apple’s current U.S. shopping pages list the Series 11 from $399 and the SE 3 from $249; actual prices vary by size, material, and GPS or cellular configuration. Check the Series 11 buying page and SE 3 buying page for current options. The Ultra 3’s price depends on configuration and region; see Apple’s Ultra buying page.
How do the three watches feel on the wrist?
The Series 11 is the least imposing of the three, making it the natural choice if you want a watch that can stay on through work, workouts, and sleep. Its 42mm and 46mm sizes offer room to choose a display that suits your wrist without moving to Ultra’s larger 49mm case.
#1 Best Overall
- A FULL-FEATURED HEALTH TRACKER—Apple Watch Series 11 gives you invaluable insights about your body, right from your wrist. Take an ECG anytime* and get alerts for a high and low heart rate or an irregular rhythm*—so you can stay closer to your heart. You can also view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app* and be notified of possible sleep apnea.*
- KNOW YOUR SLEEP SCORE—With advanced sleep tracking, Series 11 gives you a daily sleep score. It’s an easy way to help measure and understand the quality of your sleep, so you can make it more restorative.
- GET HYPERTENSION NOTIFICATIONS—Did you know that Series 11 can spot signs of chronic high blood pressure? By analyzing how your blood vessels respond to beats of the heart, it can notify you of possible hypertension.*
- SAFETY FEATURES—A smartwatch that puts your safety first. Series 11 can detect a hard fall or severe car crash, automatically help connect you with emergency services, and notify your emergency contacts.* Check In can automatically notify a loved one when you’ve arrived at your destination.
- A POWERFUL FITNESS TRACKER—With advanced metrics and motivating features like Pacer, Heart Rate Zones, training load, and Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence from your nearby iPhone*—Series 11 is made to help everyone stay active, from runners and hikers to strength-training enthusiasts.
The Ultra 3 makes its size part of the experience: a titanium 49mm case, flat sapphire display, Action button, and larger controls put more screen and physical interface on your wrist. That can help during outdoor activity or when hands are wet or gloved, but the extra wrist presence may be uncomfortable for smaller wrists, under some shirt cuffs, or during sleep.
The SE 3 keeps to lightweight aluminum and familiar proportions, with 40mm and 44mm sizes. Its bezel is more visible than the premium models’ edge-to-edge presentation, but that is a less important compromise if your main uses are notifications, activity rings, and ordinary workouts. Size and material details are listed on Apple’s current model comparison and shopping page.
What changes when you look at the displays?
- Series 11: An edge-to-edge Always-On Retina display balances readable information with a less bulky watch. Apple says the aluminum model’s Ion-X glass is twice as scratch-resistant as the previous generation; that is Apple’s stated comparison, not a guarantee against scratches.
- Ultra 3: Apple describes it as the largest Apple Watch display, designed for outdoor readability. The extra screen area is useful for maps, navigation, and workout metrics, but comes with the larger case.
- SE 3: Its Always-On Retina display covers everyday glances and workout information, though it offers a less premium visual treatment and smaller size options than the Series 11.
For most day-to-day use, Series 11 has enough screen without the Ultra’s bulk. The Ultra’s display is more compelling when you frequently need to read information while moving or outdoors; the SE 3 is adequate when a quick glance at a notification or workout is the priority. Apple’s Ultra 3 product page describes its display and outdoor features.

Which health features do you actually get?
Series 11 and Ultra 3 include ECG and a broader set of health sensors and features, including hypertension notifications. The SE 3 includes sleep score, wrist-temperature sensing, sleep tracking, heart-rate notifications, activity features, and safety tools, but not the full high-end sensor package. Apple documents the models and watchOS features in its watchOS 26 guide.

Sleep score is an estimate based on factors including sleep duration, consistency, and awake periods. Hypertension notifications can alert a user to signs of possible high blood pressure; they are not a diagnosis and do not replace clinical evaluation. ECG and other watch measurements are monitoring tools, not medical certainty.
Availability is not universal: health features can depend on country, age, model, software, and regulatory approval. Check Apple’s local feature availability and eligibility details before buying for a particular health function.

Which one suits exercise, adventure, and family use?
Series 11: everyday training and recovery
Choose Series 11 for walking, running, gym sessions, cycling, and general fitness when you also want a relatively slim watch for work and sleep tracking. It gives you advanced health features without the Ultra’s larger form factor.
Ultra 3: longer outings and harsher conditions
Ultra 3 is the more suitable option for long-distance running, hiking, trail running, diving, water sports, and multi-hour GPS workouts. Apple lists advanced running metrics, training load, satellite communications, and up to 42 hours of normal-use battery life. Satellite messaging and location features have service, region, and activation conditions; the watch is not a universal substitute for a satellite phone or emergency beacon. See Apple’s Ultra 3 details.
SE 3: capable fitness tracking at a lower cost
The SE 3 is not limited to casual users: it can support ordinary workouts and activity tracking. Its compromises are mainly fewer advanced sensors, less premium display and case treatment, and less battery margin. It is also worth considering for a child or family member, but Family Setup availability depends on carrier and region.
Rank #4
- GET SMARTER HEALTH INSIGHTS—Apple Watch SE 3 is an advanced health tracker that helps you better understand your body. The smartwatch sends alerts for an irregular heart rhythm, or an unusually high or low heart rate.* You can view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app,* track your sleep score, and get sleep apnea notifications.*

- WOMEN’S HEALTH INSIGHTS—SE 3 has advanced sensors that track your wrist temperature while you sleep. With this smartwatch, you can log your periods and symptoms, get period predictions, and get notified of cycle deviations.*
- GREAT BATTERY LIFE AND FASTER CHARGING—Enjoy a smartwatch with all-day, 18-hour battery life* from sunup to sundown. Then charge up to twice as fast as SE 2* and get up to 8 hours of battery in just 15 minutes.*
How long does each watch last between charges?
| Model | Apple’s battery rating | What it means for a routine |
|---|---|---|
| Series 11 | Up to 24 hours | A stronger compromise for daytime use plus overnight tracking, but plan on regular charging. |
| Ultra 3 | Up to 42 hours of normal use | The greatest margin for long workouts, travel, and sleep tracking. |
| SE 3 | Up to 18 hours; up to 32 hours in Low Power Mode | Most likely to suit a predictable daily charging routine. |
These are Apple’s rated figures, not measurements under identical real-world conditions. GPS sessions, cellular use, streaming, display brightness, temperature, and Low Power Mode affect endurance. Apple lists fast charging for Series 11 and SE 3, but charging time varies by model and configuration. Specifications are available from Apple’s Series 11 announcement, Ultra 3 page, and current comparison page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need cellular, satellite service, or a newer iPhone?
Series 11 adds 5G on supported cellular configurations and networks. A cellular Apple Watch generally requires a compatible carrier plan, which adds a recurring cost; GPS-only models do not provide standalone cellular connectivity. Ultra 3 adds satellite communications for supported emergency contact, messaging, and location-sharing circumstances. Check your carrier and local service availability rather than assuming either feature works everywhere or without activation requirements.
Apple’s current lineup guidance says these watches require an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later. If you have an older iPhone, confirm compatibility before choosing a watch; the purchase may also require budgeting for a phone upgrade. Apple’s January 2026 lineup summary sets out the iPhone requirement.

Are watchOS 26 features a reason to upgrade?
Not necessarily. watchOS 26 adds software features such as sleep score, Smart Stack improvements, new watch faces, wrist-flick and Double Tap-style interactions, and workout-related updates. Many benefits are not exclusive to the 2025 watches: Apple says watchOS 26 supports Series 6 and later, SE 2 and later, and all Ultra models, paired with an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26. Feature availability varies by device and region. See Apple’s watchOS 26 compatibility and feature guide.
If your existing watch already runs watchOS 26 and still meets your battery and health needs, a software feature alone may not justify replacing it. The new models make more sense when you need a specific hardware change—more battery, a larger or more durable display, newer health sensors, or satellite capability.
Quick Recap
Should you upgrade from an older Apple Watch?
- Older SE or Series model: Consider Series 11 if you want its advanced health features and longer rated battery life, or SE 3 if you want an affordable current watch with an Always-On display and newer software support.
- Series 9 or Series 10 in good condition: Keeping it is reasonable if battery health and features are sufficient. Do not upgrade solely for speed or watchOS 26 features that your current model supports.
- Ultra 1 or Ultra 2: Upgrade only if Ultra 3’s battery, display, satellite functions, or other specific additions solve a real need; a working older Ultra may already cover your outdoor use.
Which one should you buy?
- Buy Series 11 for the best balance of daily comfort, exercise, sleep tracking, and advanced health features.
- Buy Ultra 3 if long outings, rugged use, battery margin, a large display, or satellite features are central to how you use a watch—and you are comfortable with its size.
- Buy SE 3 if you want the core Apple Watch experience at a lower price, especially as a first watch or family purchase, and do not need the higher-end health sensors.
- Keep your current watch if it is supported, comfortable, and healthy enough for your routine; software updates and the shared S10 generation mean speed alone is a weak reason to replace it.
