For long, phone-free hikes and runs, Garmin Fenix is the stronger default if battery endurance and onboard route navigation matter most. Apple Watch Ultra 4 is a better fit for iPhone owners who prioritize smartwatch integration, cellular functions, and Apple’s satellite safety features. Neither watch replaces a phone in every sense: GPS tracking, offline maps, downloaded music, cellular service, and satellite communication are distinct features with different setup and coverage needs.

This comparison uses Apple Watch Ultra 4 and Garmin Fenix 9 Pro as the current generations as of October 12, 2026. The available Fenix documentation cited below covers the Fenix 8, so its specific map, music, and safety details should not be assumed to apply unchanged to Fenix 9 Pro.

What does “phone-free” mean for a hike or run?

A watch can record a GPS workout without your phone while still relying on a phone to prepare maps, a network for communication, or a subscription for music. Decide which tasks you need the watch to handle before choosing:

  • Workout tracking: recording your route and activity on the watch.
  • Offline navigation: viewing downloaded maps or following a route without a live connection.
  • Phone-free audio: playing music stored on the watch rather than streaming it.
  • Communication: contacting people over cellular service or satellite, where supported.

These capabilities are not interchangeable. Download maps, routes, and audio before leaving coverage, and check the exact model’s instructions and regional availability.

  • In an emergency, inReach satellite connectivity allows you to trigger an interactive SOS message to the Garmin ResponseSM coordination center for 24/7 assistance (active plan required; satellite connection, SOS functionality and coverage limitations apply, making them unavailable in certain situations; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
  • Access inReach connectivity and save with a waived activation fee and free 30-day trial; even if you suspend your plan after the trial period, you’ll still get up to 12 months of free SOS messaging

Which watch is better for a long outing?

Choose Garmin Fenix when endurance and route navigation lead

For a long outing where battery endurance and onboard outdoor navigation are the main priorities, Garmin Fenix is the more compelling default. Garmin’s Fenix 8 manual documents downloadable TopoActive maps over Wi-Fi and on-watch navigation to destinations or along a course. That is useful evidence for the Fenix 8, but it does not establish the same details or battery performance for Fenix 9 Pro. Check the current manual and battery table for the exact Fenix 9 Pro variant before relying on it for a multi-day trip. Garmin fēnix 8 manual

Choose Apple Watch Ultra 4 when iPhone integration and Apple safety features matter more

Apple’s stated maximum for Ultra 4 outdoor workout tracking is up to 45 hours. This is a manufacturer estimate, not a promise for every GPS mode, display setting, or cellular-use pattern. Apple announced Ultra 4 on September 9, 2026. Apple’s Ultra 4 announcement

Rank #2
Garmin fēnix® 9 Pro Solar, inReach®, Titanium, 51mm, Graphite/Black
  • Premium multisport GPS smartwatch for athletes and adventurers features a bright 1.4" solar charged display with a scratch-resistant sapphire lens and the first-ever titanium fēnix watch case for lightweight comfort and durability plus a built-in LED flashlight with white, red or green light settings
  • Get up to 57 days of battery life in smartwatch mode with solar charging (assumes all-day wear with 3 hours per day outside in 50,000 lux conditions) and up to 211 hours in activity mode with solar charging (assumes continuous use for entire period in 50,000 lux conditions and typical use with activity mode (extended battery) selected)
  • LTE network connectivity lets you leave your phone behind; use your watch to exchange messages and make voice calls — plus let friends follow along with LiveTrack location sharing (30-second update rate) and location check-ins in the Garmin Messenger app (active subscription required; coverage limitations may apply)
  • inReach connectivity allows you to send messages and get location check-ins over satellite when taking on an off-grid adventure (active plan required; satellite connection, SOS functionality and coverage limitations apply, making them unavailable in certain situations; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
  • In an emergency, inReach satellite connectivity allows you to trigger an interactive SOS message to the Garmin Response℠ coordination center for 24/7 assistance (active plan required; satellite connection, SOS functionality and coverage limitations apply, making them unavailable in certain situations; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)

Ultra 4 is the more natural choice if you use an iPhone and value Apple’s smartwatch experience alongside cellular functions and satellite safety features. The 45-hour estimate should not be treated as a direct win or loss against Fenix 9 Pro: a current official Fenix 9 Pro figure and an independent multi-day comparison were not established here.

How do offline maps and routes work without a phone?

Apple Watch Ultra 4

Ultra 4 supports offline maps, but preparing them involves an iPhone. Apple says the feature requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later, paired with an Ultra running watchOS 26 or later. Offline maps are unavailable in some countries and regions. Download and verify the map before departure; needing an iPhone for setup does not mean you must carry it during the hike. Garmin fēnix® 9 Pro Solar, Titanium, 51mm, Graphite/Black

  • Enhanced stamina metrics, including stamina curve and stamina zones, help you visualize how far, how fast and how long you can go based on your fitness gains and training history
  • Garmin Epic is a feature that lets you showcase your adventures; record multiple days of activities — such as epic trail runs, backpacking trips and more — and share photos as well as health and performance stats in a cohesive story of events over time
  • Push your limits and cross-train with 100+ activity profiles, featuring enhancements to the rowing and rucking activities — as well as advanced fitness and performance tools

Garmin Fenix

For Fenix 8, Garmin documents downloading TopoActive maps over Wi-Fi before a trip and navigating on the watch to destinations or along a course. This supports phone-free navigation once the needed data is on the watch. Because the cited manual is for Fenix 8, confirm map availability and the download process in the Fenix 9 Pro manual for the exact model you are considering. Garmin fēnix 8 manual

Before you leave

  • Download the map and route, then check that they are available on the watch with the phone disconnected.
  • Confirm coverage for the location and map area you plan to use.
  • Carry a separate navigation backup for remote or consequential trips; a watch’s offline map is not a substitute for preparation.

Can you listen to music without your phone?

Garmin announced that Fenix 8 can download music from Spotify, Deezer, or Amazon Music for phone-free listening. The announcement says premium subscriptions are required. Download the content before the outing and pair Bluetooth headphones; downloaded playback is different from streaming and does not require a live connection during the activity. Confirm that the feature and service terms apply to your specific Fenix model and region. Garmin’s fēnix 8 announcement

  • Enhanced activity profiles for both indoor and outdoor rowing help monitor your fitness progress and dial in the intensity of workouts; indoor rowing introduces VO2 max to help gauge cardiovascular fitness and training impact on performance (requires a power meter-equipped rowing machine)

Equivalent Ultra 4 offline-music details were not established in the cited Apple material, so do not assume the setup or service options match Garmin’s. Check Apple’s current instructions for the watch and music service you use before leaving your phone behind.

What happens if you need help?

Apple satellite services

Apple says Emergency SOS, Find My, and Messages via satellite are included for free for two years after activating Ultra 3 or later. Find My and Messages via satellite require a carrier plan; connection and response times vary with location and conditions. Availability is subject to service and market conditions. Satellite messaging and SOS are communication features, not route navigation, and they should not replace trip planning or a suitable emergency communication device for the trip. Apple: Use Emergency SOS via satellite

Garmin safety features

Garmin’s Fenix 8 announcement lists incident detection, assistance, and LiveTrack. These are not proof of guaranteed remote communication: check the exact model’s instructions and the phone, connection, and activity prerequisites for each feature before relying on it. The cited announcement does not establish Fenix 9 Pro’s current safety-feature terms. Garmin’s fēnix 8 announcement

Does one have more accurate heart-rate tracking?

One TechRadar-reported 30-minute run is too limited to settle a general accuracy comparison. In that run, the Fenix 9 Pro averaged 159 bpm, Ultra 4 averaged 160 bpm, and a Frontier X2 reference monitor averaged 158 bpm. Those figures describe that test only; they do not establish which watch is generally more accurate for heart rate or GPS. TechRadar’s comparison

Which one should you buy?

  • Pick Garmin Fenix if long outings, endurance, and on-watch outdoor navigation are the priorities. Verify Fenix 9 Pro’s exact battery and mapping specifications rather than assuming Fenix 8 details carry over.
  • Pick Apple Watch Ultra 4 if you use an iPhone and want its smartwatch integration, cellular functions, and satellite safety options, and its stated workout battery estimate suits your plans.
  • For phone-free music, confirm offline playback support, service subscription requirements, and headphone pairing on the exact watch before the trip.
  • For safety, check the feature’s country availability, connection requirements, and prerequisites. Do not equate an offline map with a way to contact rescuers.
