Do You Need a Cellular Plan to Use a Smartwatch Without Your Phone?

A smartwatch can handle some tasks without a phone plan, but independent mobile connectivity away from both phone and Wi-Fi generally requires an LTE model and active service.

No—not for every kind of phone-free use. A smartwatch can still perform some offline functions, and some network features may work over Wi-Fi. But if you want the watch to connect to a mobile network while it is away from both its paired phone and Wi-Fi, you generally need an LTE-capable model and an active plan supported by the watch, carrier, account, and region.

“Without a phone” can mean either leaving your paired phone behind after setup or trying to set up the watch without ever pairing a phone. Those are different situations: setup requirements vary by model.

What can a smartwatch do without a phone plan?

Without cellular service, a watch may still track activity, show information already stored on it, and use other offline features. Network-connected functions depend on whether it can reach Wi-Fi or the paired phone. For example, Apple says some watches connected to Wi-Fi can get apps, read and respond to messages, stream audio, and use supported apps; the available functions vary by app and watch. Apple’s guide to using Apple Watch without its paired iPhone describes those conditions.

Wi-Fi is not the same as cellular service. Wi-Fi may provide selected online functions where a suitable network is available. If the watch is away from its paired phone and has no Wi-Fi connection, independent mobile connectivity generally requires cellular hardware and an activated plan.

Calls and messages have extra dependencies

Having Wi-Fi does not guarantee every call or message will work. Apple says calls over Wi-Fi depend on carrier Wi-Fi calling or FaceTime Audio, and some apps may not update without an iPhone connection. Google and Samsung also describe functions that depend on the watch model, service activation, setup, or phone-side connectivity. Check the instructions for the exact watch and the tasks you expect it to handle.

When do you need an LTE plan?

You generally need an active cellular plan if you want an LTE watch to use its own mobile connection while away from both its paired phone and Wi-Fi—for example, to make calls or use supported online apps remotely. The watch must also be an LTE/cellular model; a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi version cannot gain cellular capability simply by adding a plan.

Buying an LTE model does not itself activate service. The manufacturer guidance requires an eligible plan and carrier setup. Compatibility can depend on the watch, carrier, account type, and location. Apple says standard Apple Watch setup generally uses the same carrier as the iPhone, while Apple Watch For Your Kids has a different carrier arrangement. Prepaid and some older accounts may not qualify. See Apple’s cellular setup requirements and confirm the rules with your carrier.

How the main smartwatch platforms differ

Platform What may work away from the phone What to check
Apple Watch Some functions can work over Wi-Fi when the paired iPhone is away or off. A cellular model with an active plan can connect away from both iPhone and Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi calling has specific requirements; apps may not update without an iPhone connection. Carrier and account eligibility apply. See Apple’s guide to using Apple Watch without its paired iPhone, Apple’s calling guidance, and cellular setup guidance.
Google Pixel Watch Google distinguishes LTE models, which can make calls and use apps without the phone nearby with compatible service, from Wi-Fi models with different phone and Wi-Fi requirements. Check LTE hardware and carrier eligibility. Phone text-service or setup dependencies may affect messages. See Google’s cellular-plan guidance and calling and SMS guidance.
Samsung Galaxy Watch Samsung says supported LTE models with active network service can call and message when not connected to a phone by Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Setup and standalone behavior differ by generation. See Samsung’s Wear OS setup and use guidance and Samsung’s phone and standalone setup guidance.

These are platform-level examples, not a guarantee that every feature works on every model or in every country. Manufacturer support pages are strongest for the product families and regions they cover; carrier participation, coverage, and feature availability can vary.

Can you set up a smartwatch without a phone?

Sometimes, but setup is model-specific. A watch that can work remotely after setup may still require a phone to complete its initial setup. Samsung’s guidance says Galaxy Watch4 and Watch5 series cannot be set up as standalone watches, while Watch6 and Watch6 Classic LTE models can be set up without a phone. Other models and platforms have their own requirements, so verify setup compatibility before buying if you do not have a compatible phone.

How to decide whether cellular is worth it

  1. List what must work away from your phone. Separate calls, texts, apps, streaming, and tracking; these do not all have identical phone, Wi-Fi, and service requirements.
  2. Check whether Wi-Fi or an online phone will be available. If Wi-Fi or the paired phone can provide the connection you need, you may not need the watch’s own cellular service.
  3. Confirm the exact watch is an LTE/cellular model. A Wi-Fi or Bluetooth model cannot connect to cellular networks.
  4. Ask your carrier about the exact model and account. Confirm regional support, account eligibility, coverage, the recurring service charge, and whether your required features work with the phone left behind.
  5. Check initial setup requirements. Verify whether that model can be set up without a phone, not just whether it can later work away from one.

Carrier plan prices and eligibility are not uniform, and the manufacturer guidance does not establish a current price comparison. Get the charge and terms directly from the carrier for your location and account before deciding.
