The Aquastar Deepstar 2020 Re-Edition is a distinctive 40.5 mm automatic chronograph built around an unusual combination: a two-track, bidirectional diving bezel designed for successive-dive no-decompression calculations. It modernizes the 1960s Deepstar with a larger case, 200 m water resistance and a column-wheel movement, while retaining the asymmetric dial and instrument-like layout. Its bezel is a historical-style timing aid, not a substitute for current dive training or a dive computer.
What is the Aquastar Deepstar Re-Edition?
This review concerns the 2020 Aquastar Deepstar Re-Edition in its 40.5 mm generation, not the separate 39 mm Deepstar Chronograph currently listed on Aquastar’s homepage. The re-edition revives the original Deepstar’s distinctive pairing of a chronograph and a dive bezel with an outer scale intended for multiple-dive no-decompression calculations.
The original Deepstar launched in 1965–66. Monochrome describes it as a 37 mm, 100 m water-resistant watch with a hand-wound Valjoux 23 chronograph movement. The 2020 version updates the size, water resistance and movement, while keeping the model’s recognizable asymmetric dial and unusual bezel concept. Brice Goulard of Monochrome characterized the re-edition as a largely faithful reinterpretation with discreet modern updates; that is a reviewer’s assessment, not a manufacturer specification. The automatic La Joux-Perret column-wheel chronograph replaces the original’s manually wound Valjoux 23. Monochrome described the pusher action as smooth, which is a subjective review observation rather than a laboratory measurement. How does the no-decompression bezel work?
The Deepstar’s bezel is not simply a conventional elapsed-time scale. Its two-track, bidirectional design combines the chronograph with an outer scale developed for calculating no-decompression limits on successive dives using a dive table. In practical terms, the bezel’s historical purpose was to help a diver apply table-based timing calculations across more than one dive.

That function depends on the relevant dive table and the diver’s correct use of it. Hodinkee’s 2020 launch coverage says the historical French Navy table associated with the concept was obsolete and was not included with the watch. How does the 40.5 mm version wear?
The dimensions give a clearer sense of the watch’s proportions than diameter alone: it measures 40.5 mm across, 14.8 mm high and 49 mm lug-to-lug. Monochrome describes its wrist presence as substantial and its overall feel as professional and instrument-like. Those are subjective impressions, but they point to the central trade-off: a distinctive, information-rich design in a case that is not especially slim.

The screw-down crown, 200 m water resistance and bidirectional bezel reinforce the diving-watch character, while the asymmetrically arranged chronograph displays make the dial visually unlike a standard two-register chronograph. The official sheet identifies the 9 o’clock operation indicator and 3 o’clock 30-minute counter, leaving the bezel and chronograph to share the watch’s timing roles.

That is a different configuration and does not establish either the present price or stock status of the 40.5 mm 2020 Re-Edition. How does the 2020 Deepstar differ from the 39 mm model?
The key confirmed distinction is the case diameter and product configuration: the subject of this review is the 40.5 mm 2020 Re-Edition, while Aquastar’s current homepage lists a separate 39 mm Deepstar Chronograph. The current homepage price belongs to that 39 mm listing; it should not be used as a price for the earlier 40.5 mm edition.
