The difference is how the spring is wound. You turn the crown on a hand-wound watch; wrist motion turns a rotor in an automatic watch. Some automatic models can also be wound by hand, but the correct method, power reserve and care routine depend on the specific watch.
How do automatic and hand-wound watches work?
Hand-wound movements
Turning the crown winds the mainspring, storing energy. As the spring gradually unwinds, it drives the movement’s gears. Patek Philippe describes manual movements as being powered by hand-turning the crown in its movement information.

Automatic movements
An automatic, or self-winding, watch has a rotor that moves with the wearer’s wrist. That motion winds the mainspring. Patek Philippe and Rolex describe this rotor-based system in their movement information and care guidance. “Automatic” does not mean battery-powered: it is a type of mechanical movement.

Many automatic watches can also be wound at the crown, but this is not universal. Follow the instructions for your model rather than applying another watch’s winding procedure or turn count.

What is the practical difference in ownership?
| Consideration | Hand-wound | Automatic |
|---|---|---|
| How it is wound | You wind the mainspring by turning the crown. | Wrist motion moves a rotor that winds the mainspring; some models also allow crown winding. |
| Routine | Requires regular winding. Patek Philippe recommends winding its manually wound watches preferably each morning; this is its guidance for its watches, not a universal schedule. | Wrist motion winds the watch during wear, but it may stop if set aside beyond its reserve or if it receives too little motion. |
| Power reserve | Varies by movement and model; check the manual. | Varies by movement and model. Patek Philippe states 38–48 hours for its self-winding movements, with model-specific exceptions; this is not a range for all automatic watches. |
| What to compare when choosing | Compare the specific watches’ winding routine, actual reserve, size and design, intended use, water-resistance needs, service access and price. The cited official guidance explains winding, but does not establish that either type is universally more accurate, durable or economical. | |
How should you wind or restart one?
Winding a hand-wound watch
- Check the watch’s manual for its winding instructions and recommended routine.
- Turn the crown as instructed, stopping when you feel resistance. Do not force it. Breguet gives the same caution in its care guidance.
- Secure the crown as the design requires, especially if it screws down.
Patek Philippe says its manually wound watches should preferably be wound each morning. CHANEL also describes daily winding in its watch care instructions. These are brand-specific recommendations; the movement manual takes precedence.
Restarting an automatic watch
If an automatic has stopped, consult its manual. Patek Philippe says its self-winding watches can be restarted with a few gentle crown turns. Rolex provides model-specific crown instructions and says its watches should be manually wound before first wear or after stopping. Neither instruction establishes a universal turn count for all automatics.

How do you care for either type?
Protect the crown and water resistance
Push in or screw down the crown as designed after winding or setting. Water resistance depends on the particular model and on the crown and seals being in proper condition; a rating does not guarantee that an older or uninspected watch remains water-resistant. Do not assume that a water-resistant label means a watch is suitable for swimming or showering. Follow the model’s instructions.
Breguet recommends yearly water-resistance checks for watches used for water sports or often exposed to water and moisture. That recommendation applies to its care guidance, not automatically to every watch.

Arrange checks and service according to the maker
Inspection and service intervals differ. Audemars Piguet recommends annual checks of chronometric performance, functions, water resistance and magnetization, and notes that magnetic fields can affect performance. Patek Philippe recommends service every eight to ten years for its mechanical watches, while Breguet recommends a complete service every five to eight years. These are brand recommendations, not a single industry-wide interval. Consult the watch’s maker or an authorized service center for advice based on its model and use.
Victorinox also gives its own overhaul recommendation in its watches FAQ. The applicable interval should come from the maker’s guidance for the watch, rather than an assumed schedule shared by all mechanical movements.

Which type should you choose?
Choose according to the routine you want and the specific watches under consideration. A hand-wound watch asks you to wind it regularly; an automatic uses wrist motion, but can still stop after it has been left unworn beyond its reserve. Check whether an automatic permits crown winding, how much reserve the maker specifies, and whether the watch suits your intended use and access to service. The evidence here does not support a blanket claim that one type keeps better time, lasts longer or costs less to own.
