A mechanical watch that stops, loses or gains time, or develops mist beneath the crystal may need anything from a correct manual wind to professional service. Check the model’s instructions and observe what the watch does; symptoms alone cannot confirm what is wrong. Moisture beneath the crystal, abnormal behavior after an impact, or repeated stopping warrant prompt assessment by the brand’s authorized service provider or a qualified watchmaker.
What to check before diagnosing a fault
Keep checks to steps that do not require opening the case: consult the watch’s manual, make sure the crown is in its normal operating position, wind gently if the instructions allow it, and note how long the watch runs. Also note any recent exposure to magnets, impact, or water. Do not force a crown that binds or feels newly abnormal, and do not open the case.

For running-time or accuracy concerns, use a reliable time reference and observe the watch over a consistent interval. Compare the result with the accuracy specification for that model rather than assuming there is one acceptable daily rate for every mechanical watch.
Why does a mechanical watch keep stopping?
It may have run out of stored power
If the watch has been left unworn, its stored power may simply be depleted. Follow the model’s instructions for restarting it. Patek Philippe says a stopped self-winding watch can be started with a few gentle turns of the crown. Its care guidance gives a typical 38–48-hour power reserve for its self-winding watches, with exceptions for specific models; that figure is not a universal reserve for mechanical watches. See Patek Philippe’s watch-care recommendations.

Repeated stoppage may need service
Bucherer notes that insufficient wearer activity can leave an automatic watch without enough stored power. A worn mainspring or damage from an impact are other possible explanations. If the watch does not restart as its manual describes, stops again soon, or stopped after a drop, have it assessed rather than repeatedly trying to restart it. See Bucherer’s common technical questions.
Why is an automatic watch running slow or fast?
A sudden rate change can have several causes, so it is not enough on its own to identify a fault. Possible explanations listed by CHANEL include magnetism, adjustment, dried oil, dirt, shock, and water infiltration. See CHANEL’s watch care instructions.

Consider magnetism, but do not assume it is the cause
Magnetism is one possible cause of a changed rate. Rado says magnetized steel movement parts can make a mechanical watch run generally much faster. Seiko notes that a watch can remain magnetized after it is moved away from the magnetic source and may gain or lose time. Keep the watch away from magnetic objects and ask the brand or a qualified watchmaker about testing and demagnetization; a fast-running watch alone does not prove magnetism. See Rado’s manufacturer FAQ and Seiko’s magnetism FAQ.
Measure consistently and compare with the model specification
Check the time against a reliable reference over the same interval each day, then consult the accuracy specification for the particular watch. If there is a major or sudden change, or the deviation persists, request an assessment rather than applying a universal tolerance that may not fit the model.

Why does my watch stop after I take it off?
An automatic watch uses the wearer’s movement to wind itself. If it receives too little movement, it may have less stored power and stop sooner after it is taken off. Wind and wear it only as the instructions allow, then compare its running time with the model’s stated power reserve. If it repeatedly runs for less time than expected despite following the manual, have it assessed; a worn mainspring is another possible cause noted by Bucherer.
What if the watch stopped after a knock or drop?
An impact can affect the movement even when the case looks undamaged. Bucherer identifies damage to an internal axle as one possibility; CHANEL also lists shock among possible causes of a stopped or poorly running watch. Do not shake the watch to make it run. Arrange an inspection if it stopped after impact or has behaved abnormally since.

What does mist or moisture under the crystal mean?
Treat moisture beneath the crystal as a warning of water intrusion, not a cosmetic issue. CHANEL says mist under the crystal indicates water has entered the movement and calls for complete servicing. Stop using the watch in water and contact an authorized service provider promptly. Do not operate the crown or pushers while the watch is wet or underwater.

Hamilton explains that gasket aging and accidental knocks can impair water resistance; it recommends an annual water-resistance check for its watches. That is Hamilton’s recommendation, not a universal schedule. See Hamilton’s watch-care guidance.

When should you contact a watchmaker?
Contact the brand’s authorized service channel or a qualified watchmaker for persistent stoppage, a major or sudden rate change, failure after impact, abnormal winding, or moisture beneath the crystal. A symptom guide cannot establish the condition of the movement, and service needs vary by model.
Published maintenance guidance also varies by brand and type of check. Patek Philippe recommends service every eight to ten years for its mechanical watches; Hamilton recommends annual water-resistance checks for its watches. These are brand-specific recommendations, not a universal service interval. When choosing a provider, check whether they are authorized for the brand, can inspect the movement, can test water resistance where relevant, and explain recommendations for the specific model.
