Choose a quartz chronograph if accurate, low-fuss everyday timekeeping is your priority. Choose an automatic if you value a self-winding mechanical movement and enjoy its construction and operation. Both types can measure elapsed time; the meaningful differences are how they keep time, where they get their energy, and the specific chronograph features and upkeep of the watch you are considering.
What “automatic” and “quartz” mean on a chronograph
A chronograph is a watch with a stopwatch function. Automatic and quartz describe its movement and timekeeping method, not what the stopwatch does. An automatic chronograph uses a mechanical movement: a rotor turns with wrist motion to wind a mainspring, and many movements can also be wound through the crown. A quartz chronograph uses an electrically powered quartz oscillator. It may run on a replaceable battery or, in a solar model, collect light to recharge its energy storage.

Neither term means “chronometer.” Chronometer refers to a timekeeping certification or designation, not the presence of a stopwatch function.

How the two types compare
| Buying factor | Automatic chronograph | Quartz chronograph |
|---|---|---|
| Energy source | Mainspring, wound by wrist motion through a rotor and often by the crown. | Electrical power for the quartz movement; conventional models use a battery, while solar models use light and an energy-storage component. |
| Timekeeping | Check the stated accuracy for the exact movement. Mechanical performance is caliber-specific. | Often the practical choice when accuracy and fewer time-setting interruptions matter. Check the exact model’s specification. |
| Running reserve | Varies by caliber. Seiko lists its 8R46 at approximately 45 hours; Tissot describes an 80-hour reserve for Powermatic 80. These are examples, not category-wide standards. | Check the model’s battery life or solar reserve. Seiko lists six months of reserve for the SFJ001 when fully charged. |
| Stopwatch functions | Timing range, display, and mechanism depend on the movement and watch. | Range, resolution, and functions such as split or add timing depend on the movement and watch. |
| Upkeep | Mechanical service may be needed; requirements and costs depend on the watch and service provider. | Conventional battery models need battery service. Solar models avoid routine battery changes claimed for the cited Seiko example, but still have model-specific care needs. |
Accuracy and reserve: compare the caliber, not the category
There is no single accuracy rating or power reserve that applies to every automatic or quartz chronograph. For a concrete automatic example, Seiko specifies its 8R46 at “+25 to -15 seconds per day” and an approximate 45-hour reserve. Those figures belong to that movement, not all automatic watches. Seiko’s 8R movement specifications also describe a vertical clutch, which the company says reduces hand shudder or jumping when starting and stopping the chronograph.

- 2 Year International Warranty
Tissot describes its Powermatic 80 movement as having an 80-hour power reserve. That is a different movement example, not a universal automatic specification. Tissot’s know-how page explains that automatic watches are powered by wrist motion and do not need a battery.
Quartz is often a sensible choice when you want to set the watch less often, but check the particular model’s accuracy specification rather than assuming a category-wide figure. Seiko Support India explains quartz operation as a battery sending current to a quartz crystal oscillator and describes its accuracy as much higher than a mechanical watch’s. That is the manufacturer’s general explanation, not a stated accuracy rating for every quartz chronograph. Seiko Support India’s explanation of mechanical watches.

Chronograph timing features vary by watch
Do not assume that two chronographs measure or display time in the same way simply because both are automatic or both are quartz. Check the timing range, smallest displayed increment, counter layout, and whether the watch offers split or add timing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Automatic example: Seiko’s 8R movement page describes a vertical clutch and column wheel. The clutch design is intended to reduce hand movement when the chronograph starts or stops; this is a feature of the specified movement, not every automatic chronograph.
- Quartz example with ADD and SPLIT: Tissot’s PR516 40mm listing identifies the G10.212 Powerdrive quartz movement and describes 30-minute and 1/10-second counters, an end-of-life indicator, and ADD/SPLIT functions. See Tissot’s PR516 specifications.
- Solar quartz example: Seiko lists its SFJ001 with an 8A50 solar quartz chronograph movement, timing up to 60 minutes in 1/100-second increments, split timing, and a six-month reserve when fully charged. The product page says its solar rechargeable power system requires no battery change. Treat these as specifications and claims for this model, not all solar quartz watches. See Seiko’s SFJ001 product details.
- Another model-specific range: Citizen’s E67 support page specifies a maximum measurement of 59 minutes 59.95 seconds in 1/20-second increments. That describes the referenced watch, not quartz chronographs as a group. Read Citizen’s E67 chronograph instructions.
Which type should you buy?
Choose quartz for convenient daily use
A quartz chronograph is a strong starting point if you want accuracy, straightforward operation, and less concern about the watch stopping when unworn. A conventional battery model will eventually need battery service. A solar model can reduce that routine, but its charging behavior and reserve are specific to the watch; follow its instructions for exposure to light and storage.

A carefully designed luminescent coating ensures clear readability even in low-light conditions, allowing for quick and easy timekeeping.
Choose automatic for mechanical appeal
An automatic chronograph makes sense if you enjoy the mechanics of a mainspring, rotor, and chronograph mechanism, and you are comfortable with a movement whose stated accuracy and reserve differ by caliber. If it stops after being left unworn, it may need winding and resetting before use. Mechanical service may also be part of ownership, but do not assume a fixed interval or cost without checking the maker’s guidance and local service options.
Let the complete watch break a tie
Movement type should not outweigh practical details. Compare the exact models for price, case size and fit, water resistance, dial legibility, stopwatch range and resolution, reserve or battery/solar behavior, warranty, and access to service. If you expect to use the chronograph, make sure its counters and buttons are easy for you to read and operate; if you mainly want a watch, prioritize comfort and legibility over stopwatch specifications.
Quick Recap
A quick decision checklist
- Prioritize convenient, accurate timekeeping: start with quartz and verify the model’s stated accuracy.
- Want a self-winding mechanical movement: compare automatic calibers’ stated accuracy and reserve.
- Need a particular timing resolution, duration, or split function: confirm it in the model specifications or manual.
- Prefer fewer routine battery changes: consider solar quartz, and check the manufacturer’s charging and reserve guidance.
- Before buying either type: check fit, water resistance, warranty, and available service for the exact watch.
