Automatic vs. Quartz Watches: What to Know Before You Buy

Automatic and quartz describe different movement technologies, not a quality ranking. Compare the exact watch’s accuracy, power source, care needs, fit and warranty before choosing.

Automatic and quartz watches use different timekeeping systems, not different levels of quality. An automatic watch is a mechanical movement wound by the motion of your wrist; quartz watches use an electronic timekeeping system and may run on a replaceable battery or, in some models, light. The better choice depends on the specific watch’s accuracy, power source, upkeep, fit, price, and the experience you want from wearing it.

How automatic and quartz movements work

Automatic watches store energy in a mainspring

An automatic watch is mechanical: movement of the wrist turns an internal rotor that winds the mainspring. Seiko says that, for the automatic watches covered by its instructions, normal wrist movement winds the mainspring when the watch is worn daily. The exact winding instructions and how long a fully wound watch runs depend on its calibre. If the stored power runs out, the watch stops and may need winding and resetting before use.

Quartz watches use an electronic timekeeping system

A quartz watch uses a quartz movement and an electronic power source. Many use a replaceable battery, but quartz does not necessarily mean battery replacement: light-powered systems such as Citizen Eco-Drive are another option. Check the particular model’s power source and charging instructions rather than assuming all quartz watches work alike.

Are quartz watches more accurate?

Quartz watches are often chosen for their stated accuracy, but specifications apply to particular movements or models—not to every watch in a category. Seiko’s instructions give a monthly rate of less than 15 seconds, or less than 20 seconds for some covered calibres, within a stated temperature range of 5°C to 35°C. That is manufacturer guidance for the calibres addressed in those instructions, not a universal quartz guarantee.

Individual high-precision quartz movements have tighter published figures. Citizen states that its A010 Eco-Drive has approximate accuracy of ±5 seconds per year. Citizen lists ±1 second per year for Caliber 0100 and describes it as its most precise watch as of May 2021, based on research by Citizen Watch Co., Ltd. These are specifications for those named movements, not a category-wide comparison.

Mechanical watches can also have precise movement specifications. Citizen gives an average daily accuracy of -3/+5 seconds for its mechanical Caliber 0200. Compare the stated rate for the exact watch you are considering, and note whether it is expressed per day, month, or year.

What ownership involves

Power and convenience

An automatic watch needs motion or winding to keep its mainspring charged. If you wear it regularly, wrist movement may keep it running; if it sits unused until its stored power is depleted, it will stop. A conventional battery-powered quartz watch runs from its battery until it needs replacement. A light-powered quartz watch must receive light according to its maker’s instructions; Citizen says its A010 needs no periodic battery replacement because it is fueled by light.

Servicing and ongoing cost

Neither movement type is a guaranteed cheaper choice over its lifetime. Purchase price, battery changes, movement service, parts availability, service rates, and how long you keep the watch all affect total cost. Compare the warranty and service arrangements for the specific model in your market, and ask what routine maintenance and repairs are likely to cost before buying.

Care guidance also varies by maker and model. Seiko recommends checking a watch every two to three years to confirm the integrity of the case, crown, gasket, and crystal seal, and its instructions recommend an authorized Seiko dealer for battery replacement. Treat this as Seiko’s guidance for the watches covered by its manual, not a schedule that applies to every brand.

Water resistance is a case specification

Water resistance is determined by the individual watch’s case and rating, not by whether its movement is automatic or quartz. Seiko cautions that a pressure rating is a test pressure, not a direct statement of safe real-world diving depth. Read the rating and the manufacturer’s instructions for the actual model, especially before swimming or diving.

Which should you buy: automatic or quartz?

Factor Automatic Quartz
How it is powered A mainspring is wound by wrist motion or manual winding, depending on the model’s instructions. An electronic movement powered by a replaceable battery or, for some models, light.
Accuracy Check the exact movement’s stated daily rate; Citizen reports -3/+5 seconds per day for its Caliber 0200. Check the exact model’s specification; published examples include monthly-rate guidance and annual-rate light-powered models.
When it is left unworn It may stop once its stored power is depleted, then need winding and resetting. A battery-powered model continues until its battery needs replacement; a light-powered model depends on its charging conditions.
Upkeep Movement servicing and water-resistance checks depend on the model and maker. Battery replacement may apply to conventional models; light-powered quartz can avoid periodic battery replacement. Other care remains model-specific.
Often suits buyers who value The mechanical movement, the winding routine, and the feel or design of a particular watch. Convenience, a clearly stated accuracy specification, or a choice of battery or light power.

Use the table as a starting point, then compare actual candidates. For each watch, check the movement and its accuracy specification, power reserve or battery/light-charging requirements, service access and cost, case size and fit, water-resistance rating, price, warranty, and design. A strong specification in one movement does not make every watch using that movement a better buy.

A practical checklist before you buy

  1. Decide how you want to use it. If you want a watch that keeps running while unworn, check the quartz model’s power source; an automatic can stop when its stored power runs out.
  2. Compare the stated accuracy. Look for the precise movement or calibre and whether the figure is daily, monthly, or annual. Do not treat one model’s manufacturer specification as a promise for its entire category.
  3. Check power and restart instructions. For an automatic, find the power reserve and winding directions. For quartz, establish whether it uses a battery or light and what the maker says about charging or replacement.
  4. Check care and service locally. Confirm who can service the movement, where battery replacement is recommended if applicable, whether parts are available, and what the warranty covers.
  5. Match the watch to your wrist and activities. Confirm dimensions and fit, and use the specific model’s water-resistance rating and instructions for your planned activities.
  6. Compare the full purchase terms. Consider the price, warranty, design, and expected upkeep together; the movement label alone does not establish the better value.
