Automatic Watch Power Reserve Explained: What It Means and How Long It Lasts

An automatic watch’s power reserve is its running time on stored mainspring energy. Learn what the stated hours mean, why a watch may stop sooner, and how to compare model-specific figures.

An automatic watch’s power reserve is how long it can run on the energy stored in its mainspring without being wound again. The stated hours describe its capacity from a wound state—not a guarantee that wearing it for a particular amount of time will fully wind it. The exact duration depends on the watch’s movement and model.

What does power reserve mean on an automatic watch?

Power reserve is the running time a mechanical watch can deliver from stored mainspring energy without further winding. ISO’s 2026 horological vocabulary defines it as the “duration for which a mechanical time-measuring instrument can operate on its own power reserves without further external power.” ISO 6426-2:2026 defines the term; it does not set a reserve duration for every watch.

The mainspring stores energy in a barrel. As it unwinds, that energy passes through the movement to keep the watch operating. Once the stored energy is spent, the watch stops until it is wound again.

How does an automatic watch build up its reserve?

An automatic movement uses a rotor that turns with wrist movement to wind the mainspring. The reserve therefore depends on how much energy the movement has actually stored when the watch is taken off. A specification describes the running time from a wound state; it does not mean every wearer’s routine will bring the watch to that state.

Hamilton explains that a watch may stop if its rotor has not been activated sufficiently and it remains unworn longer than its specified reserve. That is a difference between the movement’s rated capacity and its winding state, not necessarily a fault.

How long does an automatic watch power reserve last?

There is no single duration that applies to all automatic watches. These manufacturer examples illustrate the variation; they are not universal standards:

Longines 42 hours and above Its explainer describes this as available for contemporary power-reserve watches; it is not a claim that every automatic watch has at least 42 hours.
Patek Philippe 38 to 48 hours Its care recommendations give this range for self-winding movements, except for some specific models.
Grand Seiko Approximately 72 hours fully wound; approximately 36 hours half wound Figures in the instructions for the 9RB1 movement’s power-reserve indicator; operating time can vary with wearing duration and movement.

For a specific watch, check the manufacturer’s specification for its exact model or movement. Brand-level ranges and examples cannot establish the reserve of every model.

Why did my automatic watch stop before the stated power reserve?

The stated duration applies to a wound state. If the mainspring had not stored that much energy when you took the watch off, it can stop sooner. Wearing time and the amount of movement affect winding; there is no universal number of hours of wear that fully winds every automatic watch.

Check the watch’s manual for its winding instructions. Patek Philippe’s care recommendations say a stopped watch can be restarted with a few gentle turns of the crown; follow that advice only for a watch covered by those recommendations, and consult your own manufacturer’s instructions for other models.

What does a power-reserve indicator show?

An indicator makes the mainspring’s winding state or remaining running time visible, depending on the design. Grand Seiko’s 9RB1 instructions say, “The power reserve indicator lets you know the winding state of the mainspring.” Its approximate full- and half-wound readings apply to that movement; other watches may use different scales or indicate the state differently. An indicator can be useful when you set a watch aside because it shows how much reserve remains according to that model’s design.

Does a longer power reserve mean a more accurate watch?

No. Reserve duration alone does not establish accuracy. NOMOS explains that reserve depends on factors including winding-mechanism efficiency and mainspring length, while accuracy depends on consistent power output as the watch runs. Compare the watch’s accuracy specification separately from its reserve.

What should you compare when choosing between automatic watches?

  • Stated reserve: Compare the exact model or movement specification rather than broad brand averages.
  • Use and winding state: Off-wrist running time depends on how much energy was stored when the watch was removed.
  • Indicator: Check whether the watch has one and what its scale represents; readings are model-specific.
  • Accuracy: Assess the accuracy specification independently. A longer reserve is not an accuracy rating.
