Automatic watches do not share one universal accuracy figure or service schedule. Check the accuracy standard and maintenance guidance for your specific movement and model, then judge timekeeping over several days of normal wear—not from a single day. Mechanical rates can shift with winding, wearing habits, temperature, magnetism, shock and resting position. Service advice varies too: Seiko recommends examination every three years, while Rolex recommends servicing approximately every ten years, depending on the model and real-life use.
How accurate should an automatic watch be?
Use the rate stated for your watch’s movement as the benchmark. Seiko explains that mechanical accuracy is usually expressed as a mean daily rate and depends on the movement. Its guidance is to assess the watch over a week or ten days of actual wear, since the rate can vary from day to day. Seiko’s mechanical-watch accuracy FAQ advises checking the instructions for the specific watch rather than applying one standard to every model.

A quoted rate is not necessarily a promise that the watch will gain or lose the same amount every day on your wrist. It may refer to a movement specification or a test under particular conditions. Compare like with like: identify the movement and model covered, what was tested, and whether the number is a certification tolerance or a real-world expectation.

Rolex’s Superlative Chronometer materials surfaced in a brochure search result with an example of a −2/+2 seconds-per-day after-casing test, contrasted with a COSC movement-certification tolerance of −4/+6 seconds per day. These are specific certification figures in Rolex’s account, not general guarantees for all automatic watches or a forecast of every wearer’s results. Because the brochure’s official PDF could not be opened for direct verification, these figures should not be treated as a current, independently confirmed comparison.

Why an automatic watch’s rate can change
Mechanical movements respond to their operating conditions. Seiko identifies winding state, arm movement, temperature, gravity and position, magnetism, and shock as factors that can influence gain or loss. A daily fluctuation by itself does not establish that the watch needs repair.
Winding and wearing pattern
The mainspring’s winding state and the amount of movement the watch receives can affect its rate. Seiko recommends winding its mechanical watches daily at a fixed time, including self-winding models, and says wearing one for more than eight hours a day can help maintain sufficient winding. Treat that as Seiko guidance for its watches, not a universal instruction for every caliber; consult your own watch’s manual.

Temperature and position
Seiko says high temperatures tend to make a mechanical watch lose time and low temperatures tend to make it gain time. It cautions against exposing its watches to temperatures below 5°C or above 35°C. Gravity can also affect the movement differently depending on its resting position.

This may help identify a position that counteracts time gained or lost while worn; it is an observation method, not a repair.

- [Mechanical Movement] This watch has manual self-winding. Please consider that mechanical watches that require manual winding can only keep time for a short time after winding. To prevent running or inaccurate time, it is advised that you verify the time periodically and wind up the chain 15–20 times.

Magnetism and shock
Seiko lists phones, computer and television speakers, magnetic clasps, hair dryers, electric razors, and refrigerator magnets among everyday sources of magnetism. A watch may remain magnetized after it is moved away from the source. Magnetism is one possible explanation for a sudden rate change, not a diagnosis: persistent or unexplained changes warrant professional inspection rather than an assumption that a consumer demagnetizer will solve the problem.
When should you get an automatic watch serviced?
Follow the schedule for your make and model; there is no single interval that applies to every automatic watch. The manufacturer recommendations below differ, and neither should be generalized beyond the brand’s own guidance.

Service can mean different kinds of work
An inspection or rate adjustment is not necessarily the same as a complete overhaul. Rolex describes its full service as dismantling and inspecting the watch, ultrasonic cleaning of components, replacing parts that do not meet its specifications, lubrication, precision testing, and waterproofness checks. Rolex says its complete overhaul takes at least four to six weeks depending on the watch’s condition. These details describe Rolex’s process only; other brands and service providers may define and time their work differently.

What to do if your watch is gaining or losing too much time
- Record the rate over several days. Wear the watch as you normally would and compare it with a reliable time reference. A single day is not enough to establish the average daily rate; Seiko recommends observing a week or ten days of actual wear.
- Check the correct specification. Find the stated accuracy standard in the watch’s manual or the manufacturer’s documentation for its movement. Do not substitute a certification figure for the real-world expectation of a different model.
- Consider the conditions. Note whether winding, wearing time, temperature, a shock, magnetic exposure, or resting position changed. These are potential influences, not proof of a specific fault.
- Ask an authorized service provider if the result concerns you. Seiko advises contacting an Authorized Seiko Service Center or appointed dealer when accuracy is a concern. Rolex similarly directs owners whose Rolex runs fast or slow to an Official Rolex Jeweler or Service Center. For another brand, use its own authorized service route.
Seiko’s advice on what to do when a watch gains or loses too much time is to consult the movement’s stated accuracy standard and seek authorized help if concerned. A marked or unexplained change is a sensible reason to arrange an inspection rather than trying to diagnose the movement from the rate alone.
