The same self-winding mechanical movement can appear in a diver, field, dress, pilot, chronograph, or GMT watch. Choose by the way you plan to wear and use it, then verify the specifications of the exact watch.
What makes a watch automatic?
Victorinox describes an automatic watch as a mechanical watch that uses a mainspring and winds itself through wrist movement. In other words, “automatic” identifies the movement: it does not tell you whether the watch is sporty, formal, or built around a particular function.

Style and function are separate categories. A watch can pair an automatic movement with a diver design, for example, or combine that movement with a GMT function. The categories below are useful ways to narrow a search, not exclusive boxes with one standardized specification.

Diver watches
Diver watches are sporty, water-oriented designs. The label alone does not establish that a particular watch is suitable for a certain depth or water activity. Check the model’s stated water-resistance rating and the manufacturer’s guidance before taking it into water.

Field watches
Field watches have a rugged, casual look and commonly emphasize a dial that is easy to read. They can be a natural everyday choice, but the style name is not proof of military-grade performance.
Dress watches
Dress watches are the formal option, generally designed to sit comfortably with dressier clothing. Individual designs vary, so consider the specific watch’s appearance and fit rather than relying on the category name alone.

- Stainless Steel case with Black Resin Band
- Black Dial with date window at 3 O'clock
- Luminous markers and hour hands; sweep second hand
- Anti-reverse bezel
- Water-resistant to 200 M (660 feet)
Pilot watches
Pilot watches draw on aviation-inspired design and are associated with legible dials. That styling does not, by itself, establish aviation certification or suitability for professional aviation use.
Chronographs
A chronograph is a stopwatch function used to measure elapsed time. It is a complication, not a movement type: an automatic watch may include a chronograph, but the word “chronograph” does not mean that a watch is automatic.

GMT and travel watches
GMT and travel-oriented watches are intended to help track another time zone. The way that information is implemented and displayed can differ, so check the exact model’s description to understand how its function works.
How to choose your first automatic watch
Start with the situation in which you expect to wear the watch most. These categories suggest where to look; they do not guarantee a particular level of performance.

- For formal clothing: Start with a dress style.
- For water-oriented use: Consider diver styles, then confirm the specific watch’s rating and manufacturer guidance.
- For rugged, casual wear: Look at field styles.
- For aviation-inspired legibility: Explore pilot styles without assuming certification or professional suitability.
- For measuring elapsed time: Look for a chronograph function.
- For travel across time zones: Look for GMT or other travel-oriented functionality and confirm how the model displays it.
What to check on the specific watch
Once you have a style in mind, compare the actual watches against the needs you identified. A category name cannot substitute for model-level details.
- Intended use: Check whether the manufacturer’s description and specifications support the way you plan to wear the watch.
- Wrist fit: Assess how the particular watch sits and feels on your wrist.
- Legibility: Consider whether you can read its dial easily in the situations where you will use it.
- Water resistance: For water-oriented use, check the exact rating and the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Useful functions: Confirm that the chronograph, GMT, or other feature works the way you expect and is one you will actually use.
These categories help organize a search, but they do not establish a current model shortlist, prices, or comparative performance. Make a model-level decision from the chosen watch’s official specifications.
