Choose quartz for convenient, generally more accurate timekeeping with little day-to-day attention. Choose automatic if you value a mechanical movement and are comfortable with winding or regular wear, a finite power reserve, and model-specific servicing. These are practical tendencies, not guarantees: compare the exact watch’s accuracy specification, battery life or power reserve, service guidance, fit, water resistance, and price.
How quartz and automatic movements work
Quartz: battery-powered timekeeping
A quartz watch uses electrical energy—usually from a battery—to stimulate a quartz crystal that regulates timekeeping. Victorinox describes quartz as accurate and low-maintenance, while Timex says its quartz watches often deviate by only a few seconds per month. That broad description is not a specification or guarantee for every quartz watch; check the maker’s stated accuracy for the specific model. Victorinox’s movement guide and Timex’s quartz-versus-automatic guide explain the distinction.

Automatic: a self-winding mechanical movement
An automatic watch is mechanical. Motion from the wrist turns a winding mechanism, storing energy in a mainspring. If the watch is left unworn until that stored energy runs out, it stops and may need winding and resetting. Victorinox lists a 38-to-48-hour reserve for its automatic models; Patek Philippe gives the same range for most of its self-winding movements, with exceptions. Those are brand-specific figures, not a standard for every automatic watch. See Victorinox’s watch FAQ and Patek Philippe’s care recommendations.
A hybrid option
Some movements combine aspects of both systems. Swatch describes Autoquartz, which uses motion to generate electricity, stores it, and regulates time with a quartz oscillator. Treat it as a specific technology rather than a feature of ordinary battery-powered quartz or conventional automatic movements.

Which movement fits your routine?
- Choose quartz as your starting point if you prioritize convenience, accuracy, and less routine attention. Battery replacement is periodic; its timing depends on the model and its functions.
- Consider automatic if you enjoy mechanical operation or traditional watchmaking. Regular wear can keep it wound, while intermittent wear may mean resetting it.
- If you rotate watches, compare the automatic’s stated power reserve with how often you expect to wear it. A longer reserve can mean fewer stops between wears, but it does not make the movement equivalent to quartz in accuracy or upkeep.
- If you want quartz regulation without an ordinary battery arrangement, investigate a named hybrid technology such as Autoquartz and verify how that particular model is powered.
The movement is not a measure of a watch’s overall quality or status. Either type can suit its owner; the choice depends on use, specifications, and how much value you place on mechanical operation.
Accuracy, power, and maintenance compared
| Consideration | Quartz | Automatic |
|---|---|---|
| Timekeeping | Generally accurate; use the specific model’s stated tolerance. | Mechanical timekeeping; use the specific model’s stated accuracy, if published. |
| Energy and idle behavior | Usually battery-powered; battery life varies by model and functions. | Wrist motion winds the mainspring; once the stored reserve runs out, the watch stops. |
| Published brand examples | Patek Philippe states two to three years of battery life for its quartz movements. Victorinox states approximately 24 months for its quartz watches and notes that functions such as a chronograph can use more energy. | Patek Philippe lists 38 to 48 hours for most of its self-winding movements, with exceptions. Victorinox lists 38 to 48 hours for its automatic models, depending on model. |
| Service guidance | Patek Philippe recommends service every eight to ten years for its quartz watches. Victorinox recommends a complete overhaul every six years depending on model, use, and climate. | Patek Philippe recommends service every eight to ten years for its mechanical watches. Victorinox recommends a four-to-six-year overhaul interval for its mechanical movements. |
These figures are the respective manufacturers’ guidance for their own watches, not universal averages or guarantees. The service intervals are different brands’ recommendations, not a single industry-wide schedule. Consult the exact model’s manual and service terms.

What to compare when shopping
- Accuracy: Look for the maker’s stated tolerance for the exact model rather than assuming a movement-wide figure.
- Power and idle behavior: For quartz, check the battery-life estimate; for automatic, check the power reserve and winding instructions.
- Maintenance: Check battery-replacement guidance and any water-resistance checks for quartz, or the maker’s mechanical-service recommendations for automatic.
- Your wearing pattern: Consider whether the watch will be worn daily, occasionally, or in rotation with several watches.
- The whole watch: Compare dimensions, legibility, functions, comfort, materials, water-resistance rating, warranty, and price. Water resistance depends on the individual watch’s construction and condition, not simply its movement type.
- Your preference: Decide whether the mechanical operation itself adds enough enjoyment to justify its ownership and service needs.
Battery replacement and service details matter
Patek Philippe states a two-to-three-year battery life for its quartz movements, while Victorinox gives approximately 24 months for its quartz watches. Victorinox notes that functions such as a chronograph can increase energy use, so these examples should not be treated as a promise for another brand or model. Patek Philippe’s recommendations and Victorinox’s FAQ give their respective guidance.
