Best AI Note-Taking Devices in 2026: PLAUD NotePin S, Omi, Friend, and the Rewind Reality Check

The PLAUD NotePin S is the best current wearable AI note-taker for most in-person meetings, interviews, and lectures. Here is how it compares with the original NotePin, Omi, Friend, and the discontinued Rewind/Limitless Pendant.

The best current wearable AI note-taker for most in-person meetings, interviews, lectures, and field work is the PLAUD NotePin S. It combines a 0.61-ounce wearable body, a physical record button, Press to Highlight, 64GB of storage, up to 20 hours of continuous recording, and PLAUD’s mature transcription and summarization workflow. The original PLAUD NotePin is the better value if you can live without the tactile highlight control and extra wearing accessories.

The Rewind Pendant remains important to the category’s history, but it is not a straightforward new-buy recommendation in 2026. Omi is the better choice for open-source, customizable, or self-hosted workflows, while Friend is an AI companion pendant rather than a conventional professional note-taking recorder.

Quick verdict

Device Best for Phone calls? Key trade-off
PLAUD NotePin S Best overall wearable AI note-taker for in-person conversations No Cloud-connected ecosystem and optional subscription
PLAUD NotePin Lower-cost wearable recording No No Press to Highlight, smaller battery, and fewer bundled wearing accessories
Omi Open-source, customizable, local, or self-hosted experimentation Depends on setup and device More technical involvement and variable hardware availability
Friend Ambient AI companionship Not its central use case Less suitable for structured transcripts, action items, and professional notes
Rewind/Limitless Pendant Category history or possible legacy-hardware experimentation Not a dependable current recommendation Sales and service continuity are uncertain after reported discontinuation

Specifications and prices in this guide are manufacturer-published or reported in the supplied 2026 research, not independent measurements by WatchRanker. Prices, plans, stock, regional features, and retailer listings can change and should be checked immediately before purchase.

Plaud transforms a single conversation into multiple perspectives, providing faster, clearer insights, and unifies these inputs to deliver role-specific summaries that reflect your intent and priorities
  • Lightweight Power and Peace of Mind: Weighing only 0.61 oz, Plaud NotePin S delivers 20 hours of continuous recording and 40 days of standby time. Store up to 64GB of audio locally, ensuring you capture every insight even without an internet connection

PLAUD lists the NotePin S at $179. Its body weighs 0.61 ounces and includes 64GB of storage, two MEMS microphones, an effective recording range of up to 9.8 feet, up to 20 hours of continuous recording, and up to 40 days of standby time. Those are advertised maximums rather than guarantees in every room, conversation, or usage pattern.

Why the S model is the best default

  • Physical recording control: the tactile button starts and stops recording, giving the user a deliberate control that is easier to confirm than a phone-screen interaction.
  • Press to Highlight: while recording, the button can flag an important moment for later review. This is useful when a meeting produces one decision, quote, task, or follow-up that should not disappear inside a long transcript.
  • Flexible wearing options: the box includes a magnetic pin, clip, lanyard, wristband, charging dock, and USB-C cable.
  • Large onboard storage: 64GB is ample for a wearable recorder, although storage capacity does not remove the need to sync and manage recordings responsibly.
  • Established AI workflow: recordings can move into the PLAUD app, web interface, or desktop application for transcription, summaries, insights, action items, speaker labels, and reference-based answers.

PLAUD advertises transcription in 112 languages and more than 10,000 summary templates. The exact languages, templates, and AI features may vary by region, application version, and subscription plan, so those figures should be treated as platform claims rather than a promise that every feature is available to every account.

The important limitations

NotePin S does not record phone calls. PLAUD says the wearable lacks the Vibration Conduction Sensor used for its call-recording products. If calls are central to your workflow, skip both Pin models and consider the PLAUD Note or Note Pro instead.

It is also not a general-purpose Bluetooth microphone. Its Bluetooth Low Energy connection is used for device management; it is not intended to pair like a conventional Bluetooth audio device with a car, headset, or computer as a live microphone. Recordings are managed through PLAUD’s app or web-based workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For online meetings, the NotePin S should be viewed as an in-person recorder that can be managed with PLAUD Desktop, not as a universal replacement for software that captures computer audio. If most of your meetings take place in Zoom, Teams, Meet, or another online service, a desktop meeting recorder may be a more direct fit.

Subscription cost matters

The device can be used with PLAUD’s free Starter plan, which includes 300 transcription minutes per month. In the researched 2026 listing, PLAUD showed Pro at $8.33 per month when billed annually and Unlimited at $19.99 per month when billed annually. Treat those figures as time-sensitive: billing cycles, plan limits, regional pricing, and included AI features can change.

The right question is not simply whether the hardware costs $179. Ask how many minutes you will transcribe each month and whether the Starter allowance is enough. A person who records one short meeting a week may have a very different total cost from someone who captures hours of interviews every day.

Fit and safety warning

PLAUD warns that the NotePin S’s magnetic pin and clip can generate magnetic fields of up to 2,100 gauss. Users with pacemakers should not wear the device on the chest area with magnetic accessories. Use a nonmagnetic wearing method only if it is appropriate for your medical situation, and follow the manufacturer’s safety guidance.

2. Original PLAUD NotePin: best value wearable

The original PLAUD NotePin retains the central idea: a small wearable recorder for hands-free, in-person conversations that are later transcribed and summarized in the PLAUD ecosystem. PLAUD lists it at $159 on its global product page, making the $20 difference between it and the S model meaningful for budget-conscious buyers.

It adapts to both indoor and outdoor environments, delivering consistent performance wherever you need to capture audio. A multi-purpose tool for all your recording needs.

Its broad headline capabilities are similar: up to 20 hours of recording, up to 40 days of standby time, 64GB of storage, and no phone-call recording. It also includes a magnetic pin and clip. The core recording and AI-processing experience is therefore not radically different from the S model.

What you give up compared with NotePin S

  • No Press to Highlight: there is no equivalent tactile highlight workflow while recording.
  • Smaller battery: the original model uses a listed 270mAh battery, compared with 320mAh in the S.
  • Fewer included wearing accessories: the S adds a wristband and lanyard in the box.
  • Less immediate recording feedback: the S’s tactile control is a practical advantage when you want a clear physical interaction before or during a conversation.

Choose the original NotePin when you want the basic wearable form factor and PLAUD transcription workflow at the lowest entry price. Choose the S when the extra $20 is acceptable and you expect to switch between a pin, clip, lanyard, or wristband, or when flagging important moments will save time later.

3. PLAUD Note or Note Pro: choose these for calls or larger rooms

Many buyers start by searching for a wearable microphone but actually need two different capabilities: recording in-person meetings and capturing phone calls. The NotePin and NotePin S are the wrong choices for that combination because neither supports phone-call recording.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PLAUD positions the PLAUD Note and PLAUD Note Pro as the better direction for readers who need calls as well as meetings. These are card-sized recorders rather than body-worn pins, so they sacrifice some wearability for a workflow that is better suited to call recording and conventional placement.

The Note Pro is also relevant to larger rooms. Independent category coverage describes it as using a four-microphone array and being aimed at larger-room or longer-session recording. That is useful buying context, but it is not an independent WatchRanker sound-quality test, and exact specifications should be verified before purchase.

Use this decision rule

  • Mostly face-to-face conversations and maximum portability: NotePin S.
  • Face-to-face conversations on a tighter budget: original NotePin.
  • Phone calls plus meetings: PLAUD Note or Note Pro.
  • Large rooms or conference-table placement: investigate Note Pro and compare its current microphone and battery specifications.
  • Online meetings: start with desktop software designed to capture the online meeting rather than assuming a wearable recorder will capture system audio.

4. Omi: best open-source and customizable alternative

Omi is the strongest alternative for technically capable users who value open-source components, customization, integrations, or local and self-hosted options more than a completely turnkey product.

Omi’s documentation describes the platform as open source across the hardware, firmware, app, and backend. Its feature set includes live transcription, conversation memory, summaries, action items, speaker diarization, offline transcription, and an app marketplace. Battery life is described as roughly 24 hours to several days depending on the particular device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The platform is also interesting because Omi’s app can work with some third-party hardware, including Limitless Pendant, Friend, and Plaud hardware. That creates a possible software path for someone who already owns another recorder, although compatibility is not the same as a guarantee that every feature, recording mode, or legacy service will work perfectly.

Why Omi is not the easy winner for everyone

Open architecture can mean more control, but it can also mean more decisions. Device availability has changed across Omi’s store listings, with products showing different stock or preorder states over time. Local and self-hosted configurations may require technical setup, and model or cloud usage can introduce costs that are separate from the hardware purchase.

Wearable Voice Activated AI Recorder with Transcription & Fitness Tracker
  • 【One-Tap AI Transcription】Press record and let the AI do the rest — this voice recorder turns speech into text with up to 95% accuracy across 109 languages, labels each speaker, and delivers a clean summary plus mind map so you walk away with usable notes instead of hours of audio to sort through.
  • 【Built for Meetings, Lectures & Interviews】Bring it into the boardroom, the lecture hall, or a one-on-one interview — Bluetooth 5.3 keeps the connection stable while triple-layer AI noise reduction filters out office chatter, traffic hum, and background noise so every recording stays clear.
  • 【Also a Full Fitness Tracker】Flip it over and it works as a fitness tracker with 160+ sport modes and 24/7 health monitoring, so the same device that captures your meeting notes also tracks your workouts — one wearable instead of two.
  • 【Made for Professionals, Students & Creators】Whether you're a consultant recording client calls, a student capturing lectures, or a creator logging interview audio, this recorder turns spoken words into organized, exportable notes (TXT, DOCX, PDF, or Markdown) in minutes.
  • 【Worn on Your Wrist, No Subscription Required】Wear it on your wrist for hands-free access all day; pair it with your phone over Bluetooth to sync recordings. There's no membership, no time limits, and no hidden fees — turn on encryption whenever you sync to the cloud.

Choose Omi if you are willing to configure a system and care about how the software operates. Choose PLAUD if you want the most straightforward path from pressing a physical button to receiving a polished transcript, summary, and action list.

5. Friend: an AI companion, not a direct note-taking substitute

Friend belongs in this comparison because it is a wearable pendant with ambient AI behavior, but it should not be treated as an equivalent professional meeting recorder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Friend’s official hardware positioning centers on passive listening context and the ability to chat with an AI companion. Its hardware page lists an optional $129 accessory, free online chatting, a one-year warranty, and shipping to the United States, Canada, and the European Union. Availability and terms should be checked for the buyer’s location.

That makes Friend potentially appealing to someone who wants an ambient conversational companion. It is a weaker fit for someone specifically seeking reliable structured transcripts, speaker labels, meeting summaries, action items, and reference-based answers. In other words, Friend is category-adjacent rather than a direct replacement for NotePin S.

6. Rewind Pendant and Limitless: the 2026 status check

The name Rewind Pendant refers to an earlier product positioning associated with Limitless. In 2026, it needs a status warning rather than a normal product recommendation.

PLAUD’s 2026 reality-check article states that Meta acquired Limitless in December 2025 and that Limitless stopped selling the Pendant. On that evidence, the Rewind/Limitless Pendant is historically important to the wearable AI category but is not a dependable new-purchase recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Used units or alternative software integrations may still appear. Omi’s official help documentation lists Limitless Pendant among third-party hardware that can be connected to the Omi app, which suggests a possible migration path for some owners. It does not establish that the original Limitless service remains fully supported, that every used unit will activate, or that cloud, privacy, and account features will continue unchanged.

If you are considering a used Pendant, verify the hardware condition, battery health, account activation, companion-app compatibility, privacy policy, data export options, and service status before paying. Do not buy one assuming that a discontinued device will have the same support as a current PLAUD or Omi product.

How to choose an AI note-taking device

Step 1: Decide whether calls are essential

This is the fastest way to eliminate the wrong products. NotePin and NotePin S are in-person recorders and do not record phone calls. If your job involves customer calls, telephone interviews, or a mixture of calls and room conversations, start with a phone-capable recorder such as PLAUD Note or Note Pro.

Mini Body Camera with Audio & Video Recording - Small POV Cam 1080P with 64G Card - Wearable Personal Portable Cameras Recorder DV - Night Version Camcorder for Security Work Records Guard Traveling
  • 1080P HD & 6FT NIGHT VISION-Records clear 1080P HD video day and night; built-in infrared delivers sharp footage in total darkness, ideal for night patrols, garage security, and low-light dispute documentation.
  • 5-HOUR BATTERY & LOOP RECORDING- Supports up to 5 hours of continuous recording; automatic loop recording overwrites oldest files when full, ensuring no critical moment is missed during long shifts, outdoor work, or all-day travel.
  • 64GB HIGH-SPEED MICROSD CARD INCLUDED-Pre-installed 64GB high-speed card stores 10–11 hours of video; plug-and-play ready for security personnel, inspectors, and travelers to start recording immediately.
  • ULTRA-LIGHTWEIGHT & DISCREET DESIGN -Only 0.19oz with an adjustable clip for secure attachment to collars, backpacks, helmets, or car visors; comfortable all-day wear for law enforcement, sports, dash cam, and on-the-go use.
  • TIMESTAMP & MOTION DETECTION-Timestamp meets legal evidence standards for work logs and incident reports; motion detection activates recording only on movement to save power, perfect for security monitoring and property watch.

Step 2: Match the device to the room

A wearable pin is optimized for portability and close, personal conversations. It is not automatically the best microphone for a conference room, a noisy workshop, or a large lecture hall. For larger spaces, investigate a card-sized recorder with a multi-microphone array or use a purpose-built room and desktop setup.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: Choose convenience versus control

PLAUD is the more turnkey route. Omi is more attractive if you want open-source software, local processing options, backend control, or community integrations. Friend is for a different objective: ambient companionship rather than formal note production.

Step 4: Calculate the recurring transcription cost

Write down the number of minutes you expect to record each month. Compare that number with PLAUD’s 300-minute Starter allowance and the current paid-plan terms. Also consider whether a local or self-hosted Omi configuration changes the balance for your technical skill level and privacy requirements.

Step 5: Check how you will wear it

Wearability affects whether a recorder is actually used. NotePin S includes a magnetic pin, clip, lanyard, and wristband, so it can adapt to clothing, a bag, or another position. That flexibility is useful, but the magnetic safety warning still applies. Do not assume the smallest or most discreet position is automatically the safest or most appropriate.

Step 6: Plan the consent and data workflow

Before recording, decide how you will disclose the device, obtain consent where required, store transcripts, delete sensitive recordings, and handle requests from people whose voices or personal information appear in your notes.

Privacy, consent, and responsible use

A wearable recorder should never be treated as permission to record people secretly. Visibly disclose recording where appropriate, obtain consent when required, follow workplace and institutional rules, and check the law in the relevant jurisdiction. Recording requirements can differ by state, country, situation, and relationship between the participants; this guide is not legal advice.

Extra care is necessary in healthcare, education, legal work, employment, customer-facing environments, and any conversation involving confidential personal information. A technically successful recording can still create an ethical, professional, or legal problem.

The platforms also have different data architectures. PLAUD is a cloud-connected service and lists compliance and security claims including ISO 27001, ISO 27701, GDPR, SOC 2, HIPAA, and EN 18031 on its product materials. Omi emphasizes open-source components and documents cloud or local/self-hosted pathways. These are vendor-stated features or compliance positions, not an independent security audit of every user’s complete workflow.

Common buying mistakes

  1. Buying NotePin S for phone calls: it does not support phone-call recording.
  2. Assuming Bluetooth means live microphone mode: NotePin S uses Bluetooth Low Energy for management, not as a conventional car, headset, or computer microphone.
  3. Confusing advertised maximums with guaranteed results: the 20-hour recording, 40-day standby, 9.8-foot range, and 112-language claims depend on conditions, settings, software, and plan availability.
  4. Ignoring the subscription: the free 300-minute Starter allowance may be enough for light use but not for daily interviews or long meetings.
  5. Treating Friend as a meeting recorder: its central proposition is AI companionship, not structured professional notes.
  6. Buying a used Rewind or Limitless Pendant without checking service status: discontinued hardware can lose account, app, cloud, or support functionality.
  7. Recording first and asking permission later: consent and institutional policy should be part of the workflow before the button is pressed.

Which one should you buy?

Buy the PLAUD NotePin S if you want the best all-around wearable for deliberate, in-person AI note-taking and value physical controls, Press to Highlight, and multiple wearing options. It is the clearest current recommendation.

Buy the original PLAUD NotePin if you want the same broad in-person PLAUD workflow for less money and do not need the S model’s tactile highlight feature or bundled wristband and lanyard.

Buy PLAUD Note or Note Pro if phone calls are part of the job, or if a card-sized recorder is more suitable than a body-worn pin. Investigate Note Pro especially for larger rooms, while verifying current specifications.

Choose Omi if open-source software, customization, local processing, self-hosting, and integrations matter more than a polished plug-and-play experience.

Choose Friend only if you are primarily looking for an ambient AI companion. Do not select it expecting the same professional transcript-and-action-item workflow as PLAUD.

Approach the Rewind/Limitless Pendant as legacy hardware, not as a normal 2026 best-buy recommendation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the PLAUD NotePin S record phone calls?

No. The NotePin S does not record phone calls because it lacks the Vibration Conduction Sensor used for that type of capture. Readers who need calls plus meetings should consider PLAUD Note or Note Pro instead.

What is the difference between PLAUD NotePin and NotePin S?

Both are wearable in-person recorders with the PLAUD AI ecosystem, 64GB storage, up to 20 hours of recording, and up to 40 days of standby time. The NotePin S adds a tactile button with Press to Highlight, a larger listed 320mAh battery instead of 270mAh, and bundled wristband and lanyard accessories. The original NotePin is listed at a lower price.

Can NotePin S work as a Bluetooth microphone for a car or headset?

No. PLAUD describes its Bluetooth Low Energy connection as a device-management connection, not conventional Bluetooth audio. Recordings are managed through the PLAUD app, web interface, or desktop workflow.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Rewind or Limitless Pendant still worth buying in 2026?

Not as a straightforward new purchase. PLAUD’s 2026 status article says Meta acquired Limitless in December 2025 and that Limitless stopped selling the Pendant. A used unit may be technically interesting, but service continuity, account activation, privacy handling, and support must be verified separately.

Is Omi better than PLAUD for privacy?

Omi is the more relevant option for users who want open-source components and cloud or local/self-hosted pathways. PLAUD is a cloud-connected service that publishes compliance and security claims. Neither description alone is an independent audit of every configuration, so buyers should examine the current privacy policies and choose the data workflow they can manage responsibly.

The Bottom Line

For most people buying a wearable AI note-taker in 2026, get the PLAUD NotePin S. Select the original NotePin to save money, PLAUD Note or Note Pro for phone calls and larger-room workflows, Omi for open-source control, and Friend only for companionship. Treat Rewind/Limitless as legacy hardware whose service status must be verified before purchase.
