The two alternatives with the clearest support for shoppers who want a sporty mechanical chronograph at a lower cost are the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer series and the Hamilton Intra-Matic Chronograph H. Bulova’s Lunar Pilot is worth a look for its Apollo-era connection, but it is not a Moonwatch substitute. None of these watches inherits the Speedmaster’s movement lineage, Omega’s manufacturing and service network, or its lunar history. Treat each one as a different watch that shares a look or a category, not as an equivalent.
What you are actually comparing against
Omega’s historical page states that the Speedmaster was the first watch worn on the Moon, in 1969. It describes the 1967 Speedmaster reference ST 105.012, a 42 mm steel case with a Hesalite crystal. That is a historical model, not a specification sheet for every Moonwatch sold today.
Omega’s product-history page describes the 2020 Moonwatch update as using the Co-Axial Master Chronometer calibre 3861. Current specifications depend on the exact reference, so confirm the reference on Omega’s current model page before you compare case size, crystal or water resistance.
For a price point, a Bucherer US listing showed $7,400 for reference 310.32.42.50.01.001, a 42 mm steel manual-winding Moonwatch. That was a single retailer’s listed price at the time it was checked. Prices change by region and retailer, so use it as an orientation point rather than a fixed figure.

How to choose by priority
Most Speedmaster shoppers want some combination of the same six things. Rank them before you look at any model.
- Movement and winding: Do you want a hand-wound or automatic movement? Check the manufacturer’s page for the calibre and winding type.
- Chronograph layout and tachymeter styling: The Speedmaster’s three-register dial and tachymeter scale are the look many buyers want. Compare dial photos and scales directly.
- Case size and wearability: Lug-to-lug length and thickness matter more than diameter for fit. Look for dimensions on the manufacturer’s page.
- Crystal, water resistance and daily use: Hesalite, sapphire and mineral glass behave differently when scratched. Check the stated water resistance against how you will wear the watch.
- Brand support and warranty: Confirm the warranty length, the authorised service network in your country and the cost of a service.
- Street price: Compare the price from authorised retailers in your own region, including taxes and duties.
The alternatives, by what they offer
Seiko Prospex Speedtimer: the lower-cost sporty chronograph
Chrono24’s comparison article names the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer series as a budget-friendly racing chronograph. For a buyer who wants a sporty chronograph with a tachymeter and a mechanical heart at a lower cost, this is the most direct route. It is not a Moonwatch equivalent: it does not share the Speedmaster’s movement, its lunar history or Omega’s service network. The comparison article did not give a current price or a specific reference, so confirm both on Seiko’s official model pages before you decide.

- Stainless steel case
- Black dial
- Swiss-automatic movement
- Case diameter: 40mm
- Water resistant to 330 feet
Hamilton Intra-Matic Chronograph H: a mechanical chronograph with a different character
The same comparison article names the Hamilton Intra-Matic Chronograph H as an affordable alternative. It suits a reader who is comparing mechanical chronographs across brands and wants a watch with a more classic, dress-leaning presence. The article did not establish the current price or the movement and case specifications, so check the exact variant on Hamilton’s official site and compare its local price with authorised retailers.
Bulova Lunar Pilot: the Apollo connection, not a substitute
Bulova’s Apollo history is real but narrow. The historical account consulted says that Apollo 15 astronaut Dave Scott used a Bulova chronograph after his Speedmaster was damaged. That is a documented connection to the Moon mission, but it does not make the modern Lunar Pilot a direct Moonwatch replacement or give it the same mission status. Buy it for its design and its story, and judge the watch on its own specifications, which you should confirm on Bulova’s official product page.

Budget guidance without a fixed price chart
Street prices for these watches vary by region, retailer and variant, and the sources consulted do not give a verified current price for each alternative. So this guide ranks options by relative cost, not by a list of numbers.
Rank #4
- OMEGA Speedmaster Racing Chronograph 326.30.40.50.01.001
- If your ceiling is well below the Omega’s listed price: start with the Seiko Speedtimer series. It is the most direct route to a sporty mechanical chronograph at a lower cost.
- If you want a mechanical chronograph with a more classic look: compare the Hamilton Intra-Matic Chronograph H against the Speedtimer on dial and case shape before you decide.
- If the Apollo story is the reason you want a Speedmaster: consider the Bulova Lunar Pilot, but treat its history as a story about its own connection to the mission, not as proof of equivalence.
Checks before you buy
- Confirm the exact reference number on the manufacturer’s current official model page, not on a retailer’s summary.
- Check case diameter, lug-to-lug length, thickness and water resistance against your wrist and use.
- Compare the price from at least two authorised retailers in your country, including any import duties and taxes.
- Read the warranty terms and find the authorised service centre nearest you.
- If possible, try the watch on before buying, paying attention to how the bracelet and the case sit on your wrist.
Which one to choose
If the sporty chronograph look and a mechanical movement matter most and the budget is tight, the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer series is the strongest starting point. If you want a different mechanical chronograph character and are comparing across brands, the Hamilton Intra-Matic Chronograph H belongs on your shortlist. If the Apollo history is the deciding factor, the Bulova Lunar Pilot is the only one of the three with a documented connection to the Moon mission, and it is worth buying on its own merits. Whichever you choose, the Speedmaster remains the reference for the Moonwatch’s heritage, and none of these alternatives replaces it.
