Compare the caliber fitted to a specific watch—not a brand or country in the abstract—and check the exact variant before relying on its specifications.
What makes an automatic watch movement the best?
A movement can excel at one job and be a poor match for another. A long reserve means fewer winding interruptions; a chronograph’s clutch and controls affect how its timing function operates; an accuracy figure is meaningful only alongside its test basis. Finishing, provenance, the watch containing the movement, and practical service access also matter to collectors, but the specifications below do not establish comparative service costs or intervals.
“Automatic” describes how a movement can wind its mainspring from the motion of the wearer. It does not by itself define how the movement regulates time. Grand Seiko Spring Drive, for example, is mainspring-powered but uses electronic regulation; it is not a conventional mechanical escapement. The examples here illustrate different approaches and are not a ranking of every movement made by these manufacturers.
How do the representative calibers compare?
| Caliber or family | Approach | Published specification | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Seiko 9RB2 | Spring Drive: mainspring power with electronic regulation | Approximately 72 hours; stated annual rate of ±20 seconds | Grand Seiko reports the annual-rate claim based on its research as of April 2025; it is a manufacturer specification, not an independently verified comparison. |
| Grand Seiko 9RA5 and 9RA2 | Spring Drive with two differently sized barrels | 120 hours, or five days | Grand Seiko attributes the reserve to the barrel design. The calibers were developed in 2020 and 2021, respectively. |
| Patek Philippe 26-330 S | Traditional self-winding mechanical caliber | At least 45 hours | The listed specification applies to the 26-330 S variant; calendar and travel-time variants have different specifications. |
| Seiko 8R46 | Automatic chronograph with column wheel and vertical clutch | Approximately 45 hours; +25 to −15 seconds per day | These are Seiko’s published specifications, not independently tested results. |

What distinguishes Spring Drive?
9RB2: a stated annual rate
Grand Seiko describes 9RB2 as self-winding with manual winding, about 72 hours of reserve, and a stated rate of ±20 seconds per year (approximately ±3 seconds per month). The annual figure is based on the company’s research as of April 2025. Grand Seiko also identifies a temperature-compensating IC, quartz oscillator, and service regulation switch in the caliber. Treat the rate as the maker’s specification, not the outcome of an independent head-to-head test.
The underlying system differs from a standard mechanical escapement. As Grand Seiko explains, “Spring Drive generates electricity from the unwinding of a mainspring, and an electromagnetic brake controls the speed at which the glide wheel at the end of the gear train turns.” The mainspring supplies the energy; electronic regulation controls the glide wheel’s speed.
9RA5 and 9RA2: five days of reserve
Grand Seiko lists 120 hours (five days) of reserve for both 9RA5 and 9RA2, attributing the duration to two barrels of different sizes designed to use space efficiently. The 9RA5 was developed in 2020 and the 9RA2 in 2021. The reserve is a distinct advantage for a wearer who rotates watches, but it does not make these calibers directly comparable to a mechanical movement on accuracy or regulating architecture.

What does the Patek Philippe 26-330 offer?
The 26-330 is a family of traditional self-winding mechanical caliber variants. Patek Philippe describes itself as an independent, vertically integrated manufacturer that develops and produces its calibers. Its current catalog lists around 50 variants of base calibers across mechanical and electronic categories; that is a catalog description, not a count of automatic movements alone.

For the 26-330 S, Patek Philippe lists a 27 mm diameter, 3.32 mm thickness, 181 parts, 29 jewels, at least 45 hours of reserve, a 21K gold central rotor, Gyromax balance, Spiromax balance spring, and the Patek Philippe Seal. Those details give collectors more to evaluate than reserve alone, but they apply to that named caliber variant.
Do not transfer the 26-330 S figures to other family members. For example, Patek Philippe lists the 26-330 S C / 430 variant with a 35-to-45-hour reserve. Calendar and travel complications also change dimensions, parts, jewels, or reserve across variants. Check the exact suffix and watch reference in the manufacturer’s caliber specifications.

What matters in an automatic chronograph?
Seiko’s 8R series is an automatic chronograph family. Its 8R46 specification includes manual winding, 34 jewels, approximately 45 hours of reserve, and a daily rate of +25 to −15 seconds. Seiko publishes these as caliber specifications; they are not independent test results.
- Vertical clutch: Seiko says this avoids the chronograph-hand jump associated with gear meshing in horizontal-clutch mechanisms.
- Column wheel: It controls chronograph operation and, according to Seiko, offers a more tactile start, stop, and reset.
- Three-pointed hammer: It returns the chronograph hands to zero together.
These features answer questions about operating architecture, not whether the movement is more accurate or has a longer reserve than another caliber. The 8R46’s published reserve and rate are separate specifications.

Read the number together with who states it, the unit, and the test method. An annual manufacturer claim, a daily range, and a rate observed on a wearer’s wrist are not interchangeable measures. The cited specifications do not provide a shared independent protocol across these makers, so they cannot support a defensible accuracy ranking.

Grand Seiko’s owner manual says its watches are tested for 17 days, in six positions and at three temperatures, under the company’s own Grand Seiko Standard. It distinguishes the standard for men’s models from that for caliber 9S25 and gives separate target values for certain calibers. Those details describe Grand Seiko’s standard; they should not be applied to Seiko, Patek Philippe, or other brands.
The same manual recommends measuring gain or loss over a week to ten days in normal conditions rather than drawing conclusions from one day. That is useful context when interpreting an individual watch’s rate, but it does not turn the maker’s stated specifications into a shared comparative test.
How to choose a caliber for a specific watch
- Identify the exact watch reference and caliber. Confirm the caliber and suffix in the maker’s specifications; a family name alone may cover materially different variants.
- Choose the trait that matters most. Decide whether you prioritize conventional mechanical construction, Spring Drive’s hybrid regulation, a long reserve, chronograph operation, complications, or published component and finishing details.
- Compare figures on their own terms. Keep annual and daily rate claims distinct, note whether a figure is manufacturer-stated or independently tested, and use the reserve given for the exact variant.
- Consider ownership beyond the caliber. Verify service access and policy for the specific watch, and weigh the case, durability, provenance, and your preference for how the movement operates. The specifications cited here do not establish comparative service intervals or costs.
Jewels are one published component count, not a standalone quality ranking. Likewise, Swiss or Japanese origin cannot substitute for examining a watch’s actual caliber, construction, and specifications.
