Best G-Shock Alternatives With Heart-Rate Tracking and Workout Features

The Garmin Instinct 3 is the strongest documented G-Shock alternative for heart-rate tracking and workout features. Garmin lists wrist-based heart-rate monitoring, a 10 ATM water rating, extensive sports profiles and workout creation through Garmin Connect. The G-Shock GBD-H2000 is a useful feature benchmark, but Casio’s US product page labels the series discontinued. These manufacturer feature lists do not establish which watch is more accurate, comfortable or long-lasting in everyday use.

At a glance: Garmin Instinct 3 vs. G-Shock GBD-H2000

Feature Garmin Instinct 3 G-Shock GBD-H2000
Heart-rate monitoring Wrist-based heart-rate tracking listed by Garmin for the Instinct 3. Optical heart-rate sensor listed by Casio.
Workouts and sports Garmin lists profiles including running, cycling, open-water swimming, strength training and hiking. Workouts can be created in Garmin Connect and sent to the watch. Casio lists running, biking, pool and open-water swimming, and gym or interval workouts. Its activity log includes heart rate, pace, distance, calories and other activity metrics.
GPS and outdoor features Marketed by Garmin as a GPS smartwatch, with numerous outdoor activity profiles. Casio lists built-in GPS and six sensors. Its specifications include outdoor and training metrics such as altitude gained.
Water rating 10 ATM, according to Garmin’s US listing. 20-bar water resistance in Casio’s official India specifications. This rating is not directly interchangeable with Garmin’s ATM rating.
Product status Garmin has an Instinct 3 product page; that does not confirm current local stock. Casio’s US product page labels the GBD-H2000 series discontinued. This does not establish availability in every region or rule out remaining stock.

The table summarizes manufacturer-listed features, not independent test results. The sources do not provide a controlled head-to-head comparison of heart-rate or GPS accuracy.

Why the Instinct 3 is the clearest alternative

For someone moving beyond a basic shock-resistant digital watch, the Instinct 3 combines wrist heart-rate tracking with a broad set of sports profiles and GPS smartwatch positioning. Garmin also documents a workout workflow: create step-by-step workouts in Garmin Connect, then send them to the watch. That makes it a well-supported choice for readers who want both outdoor-sport tracking and planned training.

In its January 6, 2025 announcement for the Instinct 3 series, Garmin said Garmin Connect’s exercise library included more than 1,600 exercises. That is Garmin’s count of exercises available in the app, not a measure of workout quality or a direct comparison with Casio’s offering.

What the GBD-H2000 offers as a benchmark

Casio describes the GBD-H2000 as a G-SHOCK Move multisport watch with an optical heart-rate sensor, built-in GPS and six sensors. Its listed activities cover running, biking, pool and open-water swimming, and gym or interval workouts. Casio also describes Polar-powered training analysis.

Casio’s 2023 announcement said the GBD-H2000 was 38% lighter than its predecessor, the GBD-H1000. That comparison is between those two Casio models only; it does not establish how the GBD-H2000 compares in weight with the Instinct 3.

Could another G-Shock model fit?

Casio’s comparison table also lists the DW-H5600 with a heart-rate monitor and training analysis, but marks GPS as absent. It may appeal if you specifically want a square G-Shock format with heart-rate features, but the cited comparison does not support describing it as GPS-equipped. It is also another G-Shock, rather than an alternative outside the range.

How to choose between them

  • Start with the workouts you will actually do. Check for the exact sport profiles you need and whether the companion app lets you create and send structured workouts.
  • Decide how you will use outdoor tracking. Both the Instinct 3 and GBD-H2000 have manufacturer-listed GPS capabilities. The available product information does not show which records more accurate routes.
  • Compare water ratings in context. Garmin lists 10 ATM for the Instinct 3; Casio’s India specifications list 20-bar water resistance for the GBD-H2000. Do not treat those labels as identical tests or infer activity-specific safety from the figures alone.
  • Consider fit and controls. Size, display, button layout and comfort are personal factors. Manufacturer specifications cannot settle how either watch will feel on your wrist.
  • Factor in the app workflow. Garmin documents workout creation in Garmin Connect; Casio describes training analysis for the GBD-H2000. Check that the functions and companion-app experience you value are supported for the exact model and region.
  • Verify the specific model and stock. Manufacturer product pages describe features and status, but do not confirm live retailer inventory or local availability.

What the feature lists cannot tell you

Neither brand’s product information establishes comparative heart-rate accuracy, GPS accuracy, battery life in your routine, comfort or overall value. Without comparable controlled testing, it would be misleading to declare one watch the more accurate or better-performing option. Choose by documented features and the training workflow you prefer, then check independent testing for any performance claim that matters to your purchase.
