Best Smartwatches That Measure Blood Oxygen (SpO2): 6 Top Picks

The best smartwatch for blood oxygen depends on whether you want overnight trends or on-demand tests, your phone ecosystem, battery needs, and regional feature availability. These six watches estimate SpO2 for wellness—not diagnosis.

Best overall: the Samsung Galaxy Watch8 for compatible Android users. The Google Pixel Watch 3 is the better Google/Fitbit choice, Garmin’s Instinct 3 is best for battery life and outdoor use, and the Polar Vantage V3 is the clearest choice for deliberate on-demand testing. iPhone users should choose an Apple Watch only after confirming Blood Oxygen availability on the exact unit and in their region.

These watches estimate blood oxygen saturation, or SpO2, at the wrist. They are useful for wellness trends, sleep context, and—on the Galaxy Watch8—authorized sleep-apnea risk detection, but they are not a substitute for clinical testing or medical advice.

Our top picks at a glance

Every watch below uses optical sensors to estimate blood oxygen saturation, or SpO2, at the wrist. They are not interchangeable: some primarily collect readings while you sleep, while others let you deliberately start a spot test. Availability also depends on the country, phone, exact model, and software version.

Watch Best for SpO2 approach Main limitation
Samsung Galaxy Watch8 Best overall for compatible Android users Overnight oxygen data within sleep insights; oxygen dips contribute to sleep-apnea risk detection Some Samsung Health Monitor features require a compatible Galaxy smartphone and may be region restricted
Google Pixel Watch 3 Best Google and Fitbit option Automatic sleep-based tracking, with an average and range available after sleep Not the best choice for repeated daytime spot checks
Garmin Instinct 3 Best battery life and outdoor context Pulse Ox spot checks plus sleep or all-day modes on supported models and configurations Pulse Ox availability and measurement modes vary by country and model
Polar Vantage V3 Best for deliberate athlete testing Watch-initiated test taking approximately 45 seconds Less capable as a general-purpose smartwatch
Apple Watch Series 6 or later and Apple Watch Ultra Best for iPhone users where Blood Oxygen is available On-demand readings in approximately 15 seconds, plus background readings while still or asleep U.S. availability depends on the exact model, purchase history, and software
Withings ScanWatch Best hybrid-watch alternative SpO2 tracking with breathing-disturbance context on supported ScanWatch models “ScanWatch” covers several generations with different regional feature sets

1. Samsung Galaxy Watch8: best overall for compatible Android users

The Samsung Galaxy Watch8 is the most complete choice here for Android users who want oxygen data as part of a broader sleep and health platform. Samsung lists blood oxygen among the watch’s sensors and presents overnight blood-oxygen data as part of its sleep insights.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its most distinctive feature is FDA-authorized sleep-apnea risk detection. The feature looks for signs associated with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea, including oxygen-saturation dips observed overnight. That makes the Galaxy Watch8 more useful than a watch that simply displays an isolated oxygen number—but it is still a risk-detection feature, not a diagnosis or a replacement for a clinical sleep study.

Why buy it: It combines overnight SpO2 trends, sleep analysis, and a mainstream smartwatch experience better than the more specialized alternatives.

Important compatibility check: Samsung Health Monitor features require a compatible Galaxy smartphone and may be restricted by country or region. Do not assume that every health feature will work merely because the watch pairs with an Android phone. Confirm the exact phone, country, watch model, and software requirements before buying this smartwatch with blood oxygen monitor features.

Battery note: Samsung lists up to 30 hours with the always-on display enabled for the Watch8 comparison. That is a manufacturer estimate under stated conditions, not a directly comparable laboratory result, and sleep tracking can reduce real-world runtime.

2. Google Pixel Watch 3: best Fitbit and Google option

The Google Pixel Watch 3 is the natural pick for people already invested in Pixel phones, Google services, and Fitbit. Google’s U.S. specifications list red and infrared sensors for SpO2 monitoring.

The documented workflow is primarily automatic and sleep-based. Pixel Watch-series devices track SpO2 without requiring a separate watch face or app, and the most recent average and range are available after sleep. This is convenient for finding a personal overnight pattern, but it is less suitable if your main requirement is taking several intentional daytime readings.

Why buy it: It offers the least-fussy route to overnight oxygen trends for users who want those results alongside Fitbit sleep and activity information.

Choose something else if: You want a clearly documented, watch-initiated spot test, maximum battery life for multi-day outdoor trips, or a traditional watch design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google describes the feature as intended for general wellness rather than medical measurement. A Pixel Watch SpO2 result should therefore be treated as contextual information about sleep—not as proof that your oxygen level is normal or abnormal.

3. Garmin Instinct 3: best for battery life, outdoor use, and altitude context

The Garmin Instinct 3 is the strongest option for hikers, runners, and anyone who would rather charge less often than use a deep smartwatch app ecosystem. Garmin calls its feature Pulse Ox and describes it as an optical estimate of how well the body is absorbing oxygen.

Garmin positions Pulse Ox for altitude acclimation and sleep monitoring. Depending on the model and settings, Garmin watches can also support spot checks and optional sleep or all-day modes. That flexibility is useful, but buyers should verify the exact behavior of their regional model rather than assuming every Instinct configuration provides the same continuous monitoring options.

Why buy it: The long battery life makes overnight wear and multi-day trips much easier. Garmin lists up to 18 days in smartwatch mode for the AMOLED Instinct 3 model. The number is a manufacturer claim under specified conditions; GPS use, display settings, Pulse Ox settings, and notifications can shorten it substantially.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Main trade-off: Instinct watches prioritize rugged outdoor training and battery life over the polished app ecosystem of Apple, Google, or Samsung. Garmin also warns that Pulse Ox is not available in every country.

4. Polar Vantage V3: best for deliberate, on-demand athlete testing

The Polar Vantage V3 is the best fit for an athlete who wants to deliberately start a test instead of relying mainly on an overnight summary. Polar lists a blood-oxygen saturation sensor, and its support documentation describes a watch-started SpO2 test that takes about 45 seconds.

The intended use is monitoring your usual level and observing adaptation to altitude. A deliberate test also encourages better technique: remain still, wear the watch securely, and take readings under similar conditions when comparing results. That makes the Vantage V3 appealing for trend tracking around training or altitude exposure.

Why buy it: The measurement workflow is explicit and athlete-oriented, without requiring you to wait until the next morning for a sleep report.

Main trade-off: Polar is less compelling if you want a broad smartwatch app store, extensive everyday notifications, or a sleep-apnea screening feature. Polar says the same documented SpO2 test feature applies to the Vantage V3, Vantage M3, Grit X2 Pro, and Grit X2, so the Vantage V3 is not the only Polar model worth checking.

5. Apple Watch Series 6 or later and Apple Watch Ultra: best for iPhone users where Blood Oxygen is available

For iPhone owners, an Apple Watch remains the obvious ecosystem choice—but Blood Oxygen availability needs more checking than the product name suggests. Apple says the Blood Oxygen app works on Apple Watch Series 6 or later and all Apple Watch Ultra models in supported regions. The Apple Watch SE does not support the app.

When available, Apple’s Blood Oxygen app can take an on-demand measurement in about 15 seconds. Background readings may also be collected when you are still or asleep, giving the feature both spot-check and overnight uses.

The U.S. situation is model-specific. Apple says some Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 units sold in the United States without the original feature received a redesigned Blood Oxygen experience through iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS 11.6.1, with analysis performed on the paired iPhone. Previously purchased units with the original feature were not affected. Consequently, do not assume that every current U.S. Apple Watch has identical Blood Oxygen behavior. Check the exact unit, purchase date, region, and software before relying on the feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why buy it: It is the best choice when your priority is Apple’s overall health, fitness, notification, and app ecosystem and the specific watch has Blood Oxygen enabled.

Medical-use warning: Apple states that Blood Oxygen readings are for general fitness and wellness, not medical use. A 15-second reading is convenient, but convenience does not make a wrist estimate equivalent to clinical testing.

6. Withings ScanWatch: best hybrid-watch alternative

The Withings ScanWatch is the right alternative for shoppers who want health features in a traditional analog-style watch. Withings documentation describes SpO2 tracking through a multi-wavelength PPG sensor and connects oxygen-saturation data with breathing-disturbance detection on supported models.

This design is appealing if you want a watch that looks more like a conventional timepiece and need less of a smartwatch interface. It can also suit someone who values health summaries but does not want a bright, app-heavy watch face.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why buy it: It offers a health-focused hybrid format with less charging and notification distraction than a full smartwatch experience may provide.

Check before buying: “ScanWatch” refers to multiple generations and models. Verify the precise model and regional feature set; do not transfer a feature claim from one ScanWatch generation to another automatically.

How smartwatch blood oxygen measurement works

These watches generally use red and infrared light from optical sensors. The light enters the tissue at the wrist, and the watch analyzes the reflected signal to estimate the proportion of oxygenated blood. Fitbit explains this red-and-infrared approach, while Apple describes its Blood Oxygen app as using pulse-oximetry methods. See Google’s explanation of Fitbit blood oxygen tracking and Apple’s Blood Oxygen documentation.

That is a reflectance measurement at the wrist, not the same process as a clinical arterial blood analysis or a purpose-built fingertip device. The watch is estimating oxygen saturation from a small optical signal while you move, sleep, or wear the band at different tightnesses. The result can be useful as a personal trend, but it should not be treated as a precise medical measurement.

On-demand versus overnight SpO2: the most important buying decision

If you want… Look first at… Why
A deliberate daytime test Apple Watch or Polar Vantage V3 Apple documents an approximately 15-second on-demand reading; Polar documents a watch-started test of approximately 45 seconds
Automatic overnight trends Pixel Watch 3, Galaxy Watch8, Apple Watch, or Withings ScanWatch These products emphasize background, sleep, or overnight oxygen information, subject to model and regional availability
Altitude and outdoor context Garmin Instinct 3 or Polar Vantage V3 Both brands position oxygen information in the context of altitude or athletic use
Sleep-apnea risk screening Galaxy Watch8 Its authorized feature looks for signs associated with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea using overnight oxygen-saturation dips

“Continuous” should also be read carefully. A watch may collect background readings only during certain conditions, such as being still or asleep. A sleep average is not a continuous live oxygen monitor, and an overnight trend cannot tell you what your saturation is at every moment.

What else to compare before you buy

1. Phone compatibility

  • iPhone: Start with Apple Watch, but confirm Blood Oxygen availability on the exact unit. Garmin, Polar, and Withings may be more platform-flexible, but their app experience and health features differ.
  • Samsung Android phone: Galaxy Watch8 is the strongest match, particularly if you want Samsung Health Monitor functions. Verify that your phone and country are supported.
  • Pixel and Fitbit user: Pixel Watch 3 is the most natural Google-centered option, especially for automatic sleep tracking.
  • Outdoor or training-first user: Garmin and Polar are the more focused choices, with fewer expectations of a full phone-replacement experience.

2. Battery life during sleep

Overnight SpO2 tracking has no value if you remove the watch every night to charge it. Garmin’s Instinct 3 AMOLED claim of up to 18 days and Samsung’s Watch8 claim of up to 30 hours with always-on display enabled show the difference between the battery priorities of the two products. These figures come from manufacturers and are not directly comparable: display settings, GPS, notifications, sensor settings, and use patterns change real-world results.

Consider when you will charge the watch. A model with shorter battery life may still work well if you charge it while showering or getting ready, but a long-lasting Garmin is easier to keep on through several nights, travel days, or an overnight hike.

For overnight wear, a compatible replacement band for Galaxy Watch8, Pixel Watch charging cable, or Garmin replacement band can be practical—but only buy accessories that match the exact watch size, connector, and generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Comfort and fit

Optical readings depend on the sensor maintaining consistent contact with the skin. Wear the watch snugly enough that it does not slide around, but not so tightly that it becomes uncomfortable or affects circulation. A loose band, heavy movement, cold hands, poor circulation, or an awkward sensor position can all make a reading less useful.

Comfort matters particularly for sleep-based measurements. The best overnight watch is the one you will actually wear consistently, not necessarily the model with the longest list of health features.

4. Region and model restrictions

Health features are not always enabled everywhere. Apple, Fitbit, Garmin, and Samsung all document restrictions involving country, model, software, account, or phone compatibility. This matters especially when buying an imported watch, a used unit, or a U.S. model whose hardware and software behavior changed after purchase.

Before checkout, confirm:

  • the exact model name and model number;
  • your country or region;
  • the required phone operating system and companion app;
  • whether the relevant health feature is available on that specific unit;
  • which features require a compatible Samsung phone, account, or software update; and
  • whether the listing is describing a sensor that exists in the hardware or a feature that is actually enabled for you.

How accurate are smartwatch SpO2 readings?

There is no single accuracy answer for all smartwatches. Performance varies by device, software, fit, activity, skin temperature, circulation, and user. Even conventional pulse oximeters have known limitations. The FDA’s pulse-oximeter guidance identifies factors such as poor circulation, skin temperature, tobacco use, nail polish, and skin pigmentation as possible influences, and it has highlighted continuing concerns about accuracy differences associated with darker skin pigmentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Research on consumer watches is also device-specific rather than a blanket endorsement. One comparison found Apple Watch Series 7 measurements closest to a clinical reference among the tested devices. Another study involving Apple Watch 8, Samsung Galaxy Watch 5, and Withings ScanWatch found all three met that study’s stated accuracy requirements under controlled conditions. Those findings are useful context, but they do not prove that every smartwatch, every wearer, or every isolated low reading is clinically reliable. The comparison is available through this peer-reviewed study.

How to use a watch reading responsibly

  1. Establish your normal pattern. If you use a watch for wellness tracking, compare readings taken under similar conditions rather than reacting to one number.
  2. Check the fit. Keep the sensor against the skin and remain still during an on-demand measurement.
  3. Look for context. Sleep, altitude, recent exercise, cold skin, movement, and a loose band can all change the result.
  4. Repeat a surprising result. A single unexpected number may reflect a poor optical reading. Repeating it can help distinguish a measurement problem from a recurring pattern, but repetition does not turn the watch into a diagnostic device.
  5. Do not ignore symptoms. If you feel seriously unwell or have breathing difficulty, seek appropriate medical help rather than waiting for a watch reading or trying to diagnose yourself from it.

If a clinician has told you to monitor oxygen, ask which device and measurement protocol to use. A purpose-built fingertip pulse oximeter may be more appropriate for that task than a wrist wearable, but even fingertip pulse oximeters have limitations and should not override professional advice or concerning symptoms.

Which smartwatch should you buy?

  • Choose the Samsung Galaxy Watch8 if you use a compatible Samsung phone and want the strongest combination of sleep insights and health features, including authorized sleep-apnea risk detection where available.
  • Choose the Google Pixel Watch 3 if you want automatic overnight oxygen tracking in the Google and Fitbit ecosystem and do not need frequent daytime spot tests.
  • Choose the Garmin Instinct 3 if battery life, rugged outdoor use, and altitude context matter more than a deep smartwatch app ecosystem.
  • Choose the Polar Vantage V3 if you are an athlete who prefers to start a deliberate approximately 45-second test and use the result around training or altitude.
  • Choose an Apple Watch Series 6 or later or Apple Watch Ultra if you use an iPhone and have verified that Blood Oxygen works on the exact model and in your region. Do not assume the U.S. feature is identical across all units.
  • Choose the Withings ScanWatch if you want SpO2 and breathing-related health features in a hybrid analog-style design. Confirm the precise generation first.

The most useful smartwatch SpO2 feature is usually a repeatable trend that fits your routine—not the biggest number of sensors on the specifications sheet. Treat the result as an estimate, use the watch for wellness context, and involve a healthcare professional when readings remain concerning or you have symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate are smartwatch blood oxygen readings?

A smartwatch can provide a useful SpO2 trend, but its wrist-based estimate is not guaranteed to match a clinical measurement. Results can be affected by movement, fit, circulation, temperature, skin pigmentation, tobacco use, nail polish, and other factors. Treat an isolated result cautiously and do not use it alone to make a medical decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every Apple Watch measure blood oxygen?

The Apple Watch Blood Oxygen app is supported on Series 6 or later and all Apple Watch Ultra models in supported regions. Apple Watch SE does not support it. In the United States, some Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 units have different Blood Oxygen behavior, so verify the exact model and purchase history before buying.

Can a smartwatch diagnose sleep apnea?

No. Most smartwatch SpO2 features are intended for general wellness. Samsung’s sleep-apnea feature is an authorized risk-detection function that looks for signs associated with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea; it is not a diagnosis or substitute for clinical testing.

Which smartwatch is best for taking daytime oxygen spot checks?

Choose a watch with a documented on-demand test, such as Apple Watch or Polar Vantage V3. Pixel Watch 3 primarily reports automatic sleep-based averages and ranges, while Samsung emphasizes overnight oxygen data. Garmin supports spot checks and additional modes on some models and configurations.

Should I use a smartwatch instead of a fingertip pulse oximeter?

If a clinician has instructed you to monitor oxygen, ask which device and procedure to use. A fingertip pulse oximeter may be more appropriate for purpose-built home monitoring than a wrist wearable, but it also has limitations. Do not delay medical care because a watch reading appears normal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Samsung Galaxy Watch8 is the best all-rounder for compatible Android users, while the Pixel Watch 3 is the easiest Google/Fitbit choice. Pick the Garmin Instinct 3 for battery life and outdoor use, the Polar Vantage V3 for deliberate on-demand testing, Apple Watch only after verifying Blood Oxygen availability, and Withings ScanWatch for hybrid styling. None should be used by itself to diagnose low oxygen or sleep apnea.
